    So glad your plot has survived. I’ve been feeling rather down about my plot but listening to you and how positive you are about your produce made me think and I realised that I had a great crop of onions - the first in years - a not bad garlic harvest, great strawberries, sweetheart cabbage and my greatest triumph is 4 cauliflowers - a first. We have our allotment open day this Sunday so trying to keeping them going and will harvest straight after the gate closes on Sunday! Also a good gooseberry harvest despite two attacks from sawfly. My biggest disappointment has been my flowers but I do know where I have gone wrong. Soil quality was poor and the varieties were too tall for my windy plot. So thank you for making me count my blessings. Have a good week.

      It's very easy to beat ourselves up about what hasn't gone right isn't it? Glad you are able to appreciate the good things - there'll be many more to come I'm sure! Thanks Honore.

    Jane I'm absolutely one hundred percent with you on the strawberry front. We are getting so many I've been eating them, giving them away and freezing them. I have never made jam either so will be checking out those recipes! 🍓

    Lovely update Jane, I think we all know what it's like sometimes with life getting in the way. Hope all is well. In a very similar place myself this year! Your plot is looking really nice though. Those pepper plants are looking fantastic and I approve of the quantity! Do you know the variety of lettuce you're loving at around 11:00? I need to grow more varieties for sure.
    I'm keen to see if there's any actual impact on the potatoes from alleopathy too!! Tony's garden is looking fine despite his sunflowers scattered everywhere 😅

    • @JanesGrowingGarden
      @JanesGrowingGarden  2 года назад +1

      I am actually getting quite excited about the peppers now but they are taking aaaaaages to get going. Ha ha yes I did think about the sunflowers on Tony's plot but I've got to say it's all looking good. The lettuce is a cos/Romaine variety and oh my goodness - sweet and crunchy and stays as fresh as the moment it was picked for days - well worth bunging some in!

    After 3 weeks of 100F degree weather, we had a blessed rain last night and cooler temps in this week's forecast. My sweetcorn, zinnias, cabbage, melons, and okra are thriving, but most everything else has struggled. I pulled a couple shallots yesterday and they were perfect. I will be harvesting the rest this week. Not sure why the shallots are a success while the onions have been pitiful. Finally pulled the sugar snap peas, and will plant more cucumbers in their place. Here's hoping July finds more peaceful time spent in your garden.

      Oh my goodness I think I would have been outside dancing in the rain after that sort of heat! Sounds like (most of) your crops have done well though - and it's still early in the season! Thank you.

    thanks for the video. we will take a look at the guttering for poly tunnel - thanks for sharing this!
    best is splitting basil from a shop bought plant and getting loads of small plants that are now growing in amongst my very slow growing peppers (3 only but second batch). tomatoes are really good so just waiting for them to start growing bigger fruit on them!
    worst is planting sweet peas next to my sunflowers and only one seems to have survived but also oddly a sunflower has died too!

    • @JanesGrowingGarden
      @JanesGrowingGarden  2 года назад +1

      Yes I usually do that with basil but had so many seeds this year that I half heartedly bunged them in and they've come! I hope you could see how the guttering works - it really is worth doing. Aaaargh yes I don't think we will be picking bunches of sweet peas this summer either - never mind. Well done on the tomatoes - ours are just getting flowers so will be a while yet. Thanks Lisa.

    Great video as always, I love the honesty, you show it warts and all. I always feel we need to see that everything is not always perfect, unlike TV shows when everything looks wonderful and nothing ever goes wrong. My disaster this year has been borlotti beans, after several attempts at seed sowing not one germinated, so I gave up and did extra French beans instead. I copied your idea of using hanging baskets to avoid flea beetle and grew radish. It's been the most successful I have ever been with them, they are just going to seed over the last few days, I think with the heat and not being able to get to the plot every day so lack of water, but I will be pulling them out and starting again, so thanks for the tip.

    • @JanesGrowingGarden
      @JanesGrowingGarden  2 года назад +1

      Oh I'm so glad the hanging baskets have worked for you - I'll certainly be setting another couple up. It's weird isn't it how some things just 'fail' for no apparent reason - keeps us on our toes though! Thanks Liz.

    My disaster this year has been squirrels. I just planted a flower bed, then came home from work and found most of the flowers dug up and dead from the hot sun. Squirrels have also dug up most of my corn, nearly all of my radishes, and many other seedlings. It's exasperating and I don't know what to do about it. Your garden is looking excellent by comparison.

    • @JanesGrowingGarden
      @JanesGrowingGarden  2 года назад +1

      Oh no it's sounds like the squirrels have taken a liking to you this year - my equivalent have been the pigeons, they are quite shameless in watching from a nearby tree until you have your back turned ...! I'm sure you will have plenty of successes in the season ahead - good luck!

  • @annesimms7356

    I enjoyed seeing the empty tags on your potatoes. 😊 The same thing happened to all my extra tomato seedlings. So when I had to give them away (I started too many) I called them mystery tomatoes. If you want free seedlings, sometimes you just have to take your chances!

    I always put a few drops of vanilla essence and a knob of butter in my jam to stop the froth on top. The general rule is 1lb fruit to 1lb of sugar. Strawberries don’t have pectin to help it set so you could add some gooseberries that have loads or lemon juice or by a bottle of that pectin in a bottle I can’t remember wat it’s called. Anyway hope it turns out ok👍

    • @JanesGrowingGarden
      @JanesGrowingGarden  2 года назад

      Oh yes I've tried the butter before but hadn't thought about adding some vanilla essence - that's a great idea! I usually add a bit of lemon but might use a few gooseberries as well - we're getting quite a few at the moment! Thanks Mandy.
