I'm gonna be really honest rn. I have said it in the past (I'm white). The last time I said it, I was probably 10 with a group of kids I played with in the street in rural Australia. Not an excuse but rather context, my family and surroundings growing up were racist and up until I was 8, white majority. We had one family computer and this was in like 2010-11. I knew it was wrong, but I didn't understand why or the severity (not that that's an excuse). I shouldn't have said it. I learned more about the history of racism at school in 2012 onwards and people at school and on the internet (I got my first internet device at 11/12) were having discussions about why it's not appropriate to say it and I started to call out the people in my family and community who were saying it and they were completely unwilling to listen/did not care about POC's feelings. I was like 11 and a grown neighbour said I was an n word lover and the fact that just a few years prior to that I would say similar things to him ashames me now even in my adulthood. Anyway yeah I'm not an influencer obviously and have never said it on camera or anything but it doesn't excuse the fact I've said it and a large portion of the white audience rn has too. I think pretending or not acknowledging you have said it in the past even if you've changed now reflects a lack of true growth and sincerity when it comes to anti-racism. If you've said it before you shouldn't run from your past, you need to be willing to learn from it, own it and do better.
