Hey Dave big fan of your videos. Being that you play BSS reeds maybe you'd be able to help with this. Im currently playing on a vandoren v16 with red java three reeds on Alto, and im looking to try out Boston Sax Shop (black box) reeds, what size reeds should i lean towards?
Somebody's getting better... Sounds like somebody's been paying attention to Lenny Pickett lately, especially starting around 6:23 with the ta-ta-ta-teeee screaming target to turn the phrase... As always, love your explanations. 💋KISS method works!
Thanks for this video - i have a question connected to it.... I have been experiencing with embouchure, and improving towards a fuller tone. All the advice I can find - and my personal experience - direct me to a looser embouchure, and the mouthpiece further in. In that position though, it is difficult to loosen the embouchure even more , to be able to scoop up to the correct pitch, because my embouchure is already very loose.... now i am wondering how loose should be your "normal" embouchure - so that you get the best tone, but you are still able to further loosen it in order to scoop up.....
It may not work for you but I think of it like the way your jaw drops a little while sucking a straw (something thick like a milkshake). You’re still keeping a seal on the straw but the pressure distribution and shape of your mouth changes. Maybe it’s bad advice but go have a milkshake just in case.

Thanks Dave! Your bluesy example, with lots of bends and scoops, is very different from most of the things I've heard you play.
Thanks so much!
Great stuff Dave. Stealing your stuff to use with students all the time. Great to hear different ways to teach this stuff. Keep em coming!

I would go with a 3 - should be about the same strength

No, but I’m trying to sound like him!

So I installed a Floyd Rose for nothing? 😢

Lol
why the change of mouthpiece from 10M fan Alto madness ?
I was experimenting with the BSS mouthpiece and wanted to put some time on it, and I’ve just been really digging it recently for the stuff I’m playing

Think of resting your head weight on your top teeth on the top of the mouthpiece (a mouthpiece patch is helpful).
I often think of “play a flat B, rather than a Bb”
