It's sad to see that by 1990 this is what this great, but clearly neglected, little station had come to. I can remember visiting it 10 years earlier, in 1980, when its original maroon, Midland Region signage was still in place. An instance of corporate vandalism, methinks that privatisation (which has been a disaster for our railways) was already clearly in the offing. They were running our public transport down to provide the pretext for it.
Exactly 30 years ago today - how time flies! The short route is sadly neglected throughout its open and closed life, and with the Met line extension unlikely to go ahead, it seems that the line will remain abandoned for years to come...
Safety didn't matter back then tbh. Classic BR, but there was no need for all the fences that Network Rail put up. That's really just common sense, no one doesn't know that.
Very nice! It's like travelling back in a time machine. I'm guessing that camcorders were a relatively new invention then and whoever owned one felt superior to others for owning such an impressive machine.
Lovely film. This station and the line was closed by the time I moved to the area. The cover over the steps are still there and TFL have begun clearing the bushes and trees and putting new ballast down where the line hits watford high st station curve, ready for the new track. It's scheduled to re open as an extension of the Metropolitan line from croxley to Watford Junction in 2015.
An interesting snapshot of this stations history , with the fabric of the booking hall removed and the new steps under construction which would replace the covered stairway . A similar exercise was carried out at Croxley Green Station , but on reflection this was nothing more than a downgrading of the lines significance , culminating in the closure that was to follow .
Well with the croxley rail link coming (hopefully soon) the line will be double tracksed but Watford met station deserved a limited timetabled shuttle service to Croxley or Moor park using a new platform or turn around siding using a 4/8 car train
