I grew up with your show in the late 80s and early 90s and I think it did a lot form my interests and hobbies as an adult. Thank you for everything you do.
This attraction has so much detail executed perfectly - the whole idea, the great music, the absurdities of the video (cars driving on the sidewalk, cars cramming around the scene), the dog's view.
Tim actually explained on the supplemental bits that a modern version wouldn't be as good because modern items often are not as mechanical. Perhaps it could work but I can't see anyone having such a unique perspective as Rex and Tim did in the late 80s. 👍😎
The animation is incredible and holds up very well. It has the spirit of late 90s music videos while being ahead of the curve of mid-2000s styles of animators such as Cyriak and trendy banking ads. Wonderful stuff.
this is without doubt our fave of your arcade machines. When we last visited, we had to practically carry out our autistic youngest because he was entranced by this machine. You really borught so much joy with this one.
delightfully surreal animation! Love how the buses appear to drift around the corners. Love your weird mind, Tim. Thank you for making and sharing these wonders.
You are giving me so many ideas, it's just fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge- I'm 65 now and retired, but am finding a new life in making just stoooopid things (according to my wife), whilst my son and his mates think i'm Bonkers. But I'm havein a whale of a time , and your videos are a great source of inspiration, as I am sure they are to the young engineers out there just starting out. Thanks Tim.
Didn't live at the right time or right place to see the Secret Life of Machines in its original run, but I feel very furtunate that shortly after I found out about it, Tim started putting up these new series. Also the "dedicated to Rex Garrod" at the end, man
I thought this was cute but wasn't really sold on it, then I saw that 'Dog Rental Contract' and couldn't stop laughing. Pause and read it, it's worth it!
So glad you are on here you were a huge part of mine growing up & showing it was ok to tinker with everyday gadgets to see you still at makes me happy you & Rex are still my favorite tinkerers
2:41 that doggy cars tune kicks!! It's funny, Boston dynamics spend millions making a walking dog, Tim does it for a fraction of that in 30 minutes. Awesome! 😎👍
Hey Tim. I've been enjoying your work since the Channel 4 days. Shame you disappeared for so long. Been loving your YT stuff for the past few years and it's great to see you back yet again. It's nice to get all the insight into how your creations come about. Please keep this up as it really is fascinating. With the amount of machines you've made, there must be enough material for years worth of videos. 👍😃
I believe I first saw your show decades ago during a screen actors guild strike. Suddenly American television was flooded with Are you being served, Benny Hill, and Monty Python!
I don't think I'd ever create anything quite like these machines but it's extremely valuable to have an insight to how these types of devices are built. This should be an actual tv series and get a lot more views.
Im from the US and didn't stumble upon The Secret Life of Machines until about 10 years ago. Our public broadcasting stations PBS would play some British shows and movies but I don't recall Secret Life of Machines being broadcast. PBS was my exposure to Montey Python and BBC news, news was boring at 12 years old.😊 I'm an amateur inventer and tinkerer and immediately took to Mr. Hunkins shows and recent videos. Love how all the things he has made videos on are things anyone can make in about any garage. The how they work part, Mr. Hunkin does a phenomenal job of making anyone understand the inner workings of devices.
Having done a small amount of making interactive things for the public to play with I understand the difficulty of making things that are robust enough so I am always really impressed at your machines and that they last so well for so long!
Thank you for still coming out to show us the 'workings' of things Tim. I watched your TV shows way back (well it's 'way back' for the young 'uns at least), and it's great that you're still making and building stuff. I think 'Heath Robinson' is a uniquely British thing. Keep it up as long as you're able!
i love these videos so much !!! i wished i was able to watch your first series when i was a kid! Great and honest content/tv series! LOVE IT i really have no clue why you dont have MUCH more subs. there is nothing like it !
Tim, I have always enjoyed your quirky eclectic projects. I watched the Secret Life videos back in the day and learned a lot about how things work. So happy to see you on RUclips! Next time I’m in London I will check this out.
I would add a short scene of dog trying to run away and make person move the leash in a specific time displayed on screen. It would pop up randomly one or two times and at the same time speed up the motor a bit to make it more confusing 😅
treadmills for public Gyms tend to be built very strongly, far more durable than what you might buy for home. I saw a video once where someone had turned one into a giant belt sander.
I love all of this so much, only discovered you during the lockdowns and loved everything you've made in history, too, after I went looking! Thank you! I love the whacky honesty and sarcasm, too, it aint just dogs that can't help looking at what they're not supposed to! And sorry, I add this as an apology, that this comment is so gushing, I'm releasing two years of not knowing what to say!
The thought that people with dogs go there to play on Rent-a-dog is hilarious, but on the plus side, saves them having to pick up any dog-eggs laid by the beast... :P
It's sad to me that some pay young kids obscene money to develope video games that promote rape, killing, and extra points for making someone's head explode. Yet this fella has so much more to offer. Yet he receives much less in terms of exposure and compensation. You're the best Tim. Incredibly gifted and one of a kind
I understand where you are coming from, though I believe you're forcing a lopsided comparison. You're also opening a discussion, less about art and more about the drawbacks of living in a capitalist society. Instead of those hyper-produced, multi-million budget, capitalistic mindset revenue-growing mainstream games you may be alluding to, Tim's work should be compared to what is broadly called indie games. The odd-ball, niche, political, observant, heartfelt, experimental and utterly charming type of small game creations, often made only by a single developer. Even if you scratch just the surface of that scene, you'll find that there's a treasure trove of wonderful creations being produced and that the scene is growing stronger every year. And it also turns out that the kids are more alright than one might paint them initially.
Just the fact that the robot dog has it's own screen to watch is BRILLIANT.
I grew up with your show in the late 80s and early 90s and I think it did a lot form my interests and hobbies as an adult. Thank you for everything you do.
virtually everyone i know the same age as me loves the secret life films :) we even watched some of them in school
you're in luck, tim has remastered and re-uploaded the episodes with his commentary tacked on the end 😊
nice touch with Numan's 'Cars' there
I know right?!! I started laughing like a nutter when it clicked in my brain why it sounded so familiar
@@maeve615 Yes ! for me it was that Long held synth note....and it struck .....thats it "In CARS" thanks Tim for ALL
I just KNEW I wasn't the only one to notice this hahahaha :D Classic song and now in a dog-version :)
If this video suddenly disappears then we know some Ai bot at RUclips has flagged it up with a content match with the original song😂
So so good :)
Tim's sense of humour is what makes these machines legendary!
That is a great machine and the cover version of Cars was *chef's kiss*.
15:15 Great cat photo. Totally says, "Look at me, I am the shop's captain now."
That's exactly what cats do - they walk into a place and immediately take command.
This attraction has so much detail executed perfectly - the whole idea, the great music, the absurdities of the video (cars driving on the sidewalk, cars cramming around the scene), the dog's view.
I wish they would bring back "Secret life if machines" back to TV!
Tim actually explained on the supplemental bits that a modern version wouldn't be as good because modern items often are not as mechanical. Perhaps it could work but I can't see anyone having such a unique perspective as Rex and Tim did in the late 80s. 👍😎

You are a phenomenally strange man, and it's great. Love all your videos new and old
I don't think that there's anything strange about him, does that mean that I'm strange? My nieces think I am.
@@joejoejoejoejoejoe4391 You're normal, Joe. To deserve the title of Uncle, your nieces must think you're weird. It's a requirement.
I was in London last week and dropped into Novelty Automation. Loved it (and I won a Nobel Prize!)
I got some radioactive waste
That was phenomenal Tim! Can’t believe it has been 20 years. Is nice looking back at the old designs.

The video that runs in the background is like some of David Firths work - Surreal, but utterly terrifying.
Of all the things you've done, Rent-A-Dog is my absolute all-time favourite!
Didn't live at the right time or right place to see the Secret Life of Machines in its original run, but I feel very furtunate that shortly after I found out about it, Tim started putting up these new series.

Awesome! Tim. I also love that the ginger cat lives on in "Rent-a-Dog" 👍
Hi Tim, Industrial Electrician here, Love your work, keep doing it. All the best from NZ
Tim, you are a treasure. You really are.
Love the stop motion high street. Keep up the good work Tim! 👍
Phenomenal!
Another awesome video. Thank you from Canada 🇨🇦
I thought this was cute but wasn't really sold on it, then I saw that 'Dog Rental Contract' and couldn't stop laughing. Pause and read it, it's worth it!
An extra ordinary amount of work and skill displayed here in this machine. Really glad you make RUclips videos too. Thanks Tim Hunkin!
They say you should never meet your heroes. But I'd love to have lunch with Tim.

You better live to 120. Your inventions are awesome! 😅
Its great there are people like you in the world. I loved your old programs at the time and am pleased you are still doing this stuff.
Absolutely brilliant sir. I really truly appreciate that you are still willing to share your knowledge with the world. Very inspiring to be honest.
I love you Tim!! You are brilliant!!
You should name the dog (Rex) I’m sure you miss him.

The video and animations on the screens are done absolutely incredibly. I really thought it had all been done in After Effects.
Outstanding work.
Hi Tim, I love the new series. I'm hoping to see you at maker central coming up in a couple of weeks.
You are an expert in creating automata and mechanical arcade. I liked it and many did too
Loved the Secret life of Machines series. Great to find this RUclips channel.
I believe I first saw your show decades ago during a screen actors guild strike. Suddenly American television was flooded with Are you being served, Benny Hill, and Monty Python!
Excellent Tim, thank you & your friends... Boston Dynamics (makers of SPOT), are taking notes.
Another one well done! Plus, it's educational in terms of mechanics and language to non-native speakers of English. Thanks Tim!
Love the music and a chance to ride along at the arcade.
Another great episode Tim, it really is fun hearing about how you came up with your machines as well as how you ended up building them. Cheers!
