    Hypothetically do you think I could get by with filming my portfolio short film on my phone? I have a strong passion for film and would love to apply, but don't own any professional equipment.

    • @philippklein1
      @philippklein1  11 месяцев назад

      The equipment and quality of the camera really don’t matter. I’d embrace the lower quality and make it part of the narrative. Come up with a justification within your story for why the footage looks the way it does, or just assume it is supposed to look like it does.
      The most important thing for you to get in is to illustrate the ability to explore a subject visually and to create relatable characters. Focus on those two things and you will be fine;)

    Thinking of going into film production at Concordia next fall. I just got three questions: when exactly does your school day start and finish? What are midterms/finals like? How much experience in film would you say one needs to have to get into the program? Thanks!

    • @philippklein1
      @philippklein1  2 года назад

      I personally have extremely long days but not because of school but because of a lot of projects I am involved in. I usually begin my day at 7 and end around 11.
      But for school, I have 5 classes (you can also choose to just take 4/semester) 3 of them are 4h lectures per week the other ones one and a half. And for every class i usually prepare 4 hours a week ish. But it really varies a lot.
      Relative to other Programs(engineering, psychology...) the amount of readings and assignments is really reasonable so far

    • @philippklein1
      @philippklein1  2 года назад

      I feel like if you put in the effort the assignment and exams are totally doable! And I have not had the feeling yet, that any teachers are trying to mark not in the students favor

    • @philippklein1

      As the program is quite competitive, the barrier to get into the major is fairly high, you will need a strong application video (focus on a well told and strong story, not so much on aesthetics and visual qualities). But once you are in the program starts with the very basics and quickly progresses.
      I had alot of technical experiences as well as a good understanding of the theoretical aspects of filmmaking which made it easier for me to keep up with the pace of the classes but I also know students who had almost no technical knowledge when they arrived and still thrive. They just have to invest more prep time before and after class

    Do you or other students get time for part time jobs while at the film school

    • @philippklein1
      @philippklein1  2 года назад

      Hey this really depends. If I were only taking film classes I absolutely would have time for a job (and I am taking 5 classes per semester, which is the maximum you can take). You should consider though, how ambitious you want your school film projects to be and if you want to work on other projects too. But you can definitely fond the time to work on a job in my opinion!

      @@philippklein1 Thank you! So what is it like doing 5 courses?

    • @philippklein1
      @philippklein1  2 года назад

      It depends on a couple of factors. I personally don't find the fine arts classes very difficult per se, however, they are time intensive. Generally, you won't have exams in your fine art classes, I have only had assignments. While this is great in terms of pressure, the assignments of all classes are usually due around the same time which means a ton of work when assignments are due. I have chosen to take an economics and math class this semester as well as three fine arts classes and it definitely limited my free time to a bare minimum. I had one math quiz and one or two econ quizzes every week, three midterms, and two final exams while also having to do the time-intensive assignments for fine arts. The combination of science and art is something I would only suggest to those who really want to commit 80-90% of their day to university. When I did 5 arts classes, that was no problem at all. I would even say, that - considering that I can learn quite quickly - less than five arts classes would get boring.

    I love your videos. I have 2 questions after watching. Is it possible for film students to receive any kind of support from Concordia for their school (or even individual) projects? Do you have many chances to collaborate with students from other departments in making your projects? As you mentioned the fast pace as well as the stressful schedule, I'm afraid networking might be a challenge?...

    • @philippklein1
      @philippklein1  Год назад +1

      Hey Linh, thanks for your comment! In terms of support, there is nothing to expect from Uni, quite the opposite, they expect you to finance everything related to your project out of your own pocket. In terms of collaborations, Concordia is a great place. The other fine arts programs are pretty good too, so by simply reaching out or making friends on campus you should have an easy time getting in touch with other students. Most of us are looking for projects and connections so that's one of the most amazing things about Film School. For me the schedule is tight because I include so many projects and networking opportunities. The purely academic and school related work if you are only in film production wont overwhelm you. Let me know if this answers your question or if there is anything else I can help you with!

    Why did decide on picking Concordia to study film?

    • @philippklein1
      @philippklein1  2 года назад

      There are various different reasons, I really wanted to move to a bigger town with a lot of creatives in it and it should be North America, so that drastically narrowed the selection down, the next aspect was that Concordia has a very selective program which I really like as it mostly attracts + mainly consists of very motivated people. (This is fairly generalized but there is defined some truth to it!)
      The program here at Concordia is also quite hands on, so that during your studies you actually get to work on stuff too
      There are a lot more reasons but those a the “most important ones I would say! I might do a separate video just about that

    • @philippklein1
      @philippklein1  2 года назад +5

      I think there are two things, you should focus on: Show your unique individual expression through whatever you submit. Don’t focus on following industry conventions. Try to be personal, that’s the best way to be unique.
      The second thing is: Don’t focus too much on technicalities. Focus on the Narrative. Concordia wants to “build” “Thinkers and Storyteller” not technicians.
      They don’t care which camera you use, if you have perfect lighting etc. They care about if you tell an interesting story in an interesting way. Experiment with camera angle, perspective, colors…
      Hope this help! Don’t be afraid to ask if I am not clear;)
