  • Lakhe Dance is a traditional dance primarily performed in the Kathmandu Valley. However, after the conquest of the valley by King Prithvi Narayan Shah of Gorkha, many Newars migrated outside the valley, taking their rich cultural heritage with them. While the Kathmandu Valley's culture, deeply rooted in religious and state rituals, struggled to thrive outside, Lakhe Dance became an exception. This dance spread beyond the valley, gaining popularity among various ethnic communities across Nepal. Unlike the ritualistically bound Majipa Lakhe of Kathmandu, the Lakhe Dance outside the valley, known as Gunila Lakhe, requires no religious rituals or specific caste affiliation. Anyone eager to enjoy the rhythmic beats of the Dholak and Jhyamta drums can participate in this lively and inclusive dance. Lakhe Dance has become a beloved cultural expression, uniting people from diverse backgrounds across Nepal.
