Sail Life - We were heading to Ireland BUT seasickness SUCKS 🤮

- We leave Cherbourg in France and head towards Ireland but get derailed by seasickness and changing weather. Turns out to be a blessing in disguise as we get to see some beautiful places along the south coast of the UK.

Hey, Mads, Don't worry about filming a sail adventure instead of just DIY. You will do it total justice I am positive of that. Can't wait to see the content. Fair winds Mate.
Well I think he is justified in his concern. People watching this channel did it precisely for the DYI aspect. I don't care about watching people sail around. Lots of channels do that. I may watch a few videos but honestly I will probably move on and find another DYI project channel to watch.
Your DIY videos now are better than they were 7 years ago. You will find what's right naturally over time
Mads, I agree with Rod. I have watched because of the "spiffy" DIY but am looking forward to how the changes work under sail.
@@davidmilner3575 From DIY sailboat "restoration," an understatement if ever there was, to DIY repairs and upgrades and ongoing maintenance, plus cruising adventures. No shortage of material from one, and now two, of the most charming people on youtube.
Hi Mads, I am confident you and Eva will find your groove in producing sailing video’s with some DIY. Don’t worry.
An old sailor told me once that the best cure for seasickness is to stand under a tree for 10 minutes
Hahahahaha
This was great content, you're telling the story brilliantly. Just being yourselves is what we all want
Nail on the head. Obviously the content is important though after an episode or two its the personalities and the characters that make us invest our time with them. I know nothing about IT or sailing and very little about DIY but i know what I do like, and that's, being along with Mads and Ava on their Journey.
@@Lostmissionary Mads had kept us entertained with days, weeks, months of "oh glorious sanding." Now far more available events and activities to share.
Edd is on the money guys!🤓👍
Maybe talk about some O'Glorious Sanding, that may or may not happen?
Ah mads, remember how nervous you were back at the start, you didn't even enjoy talking to the camera. And look how far you have come!
You will be fine transitioning, I really enjoyed this episode and the footage from the solar arch whilst you were under way was very cool. An amazing premier/video. Be proud, be happy, you got this. And we aren't going anywhere, we are with you all the way. After 8 years I still look forward to Sunday nights as much as ever. ❤️
Mads, I’ve been following your channel for years now. I joined for the journey. The engineer in me loved the DIY content, and the adventurer in me loves the sailing/travelogue/vlog content. All of your content is quality stuff; just as you learned to tell great DIY stories, you will certainly learn to tell great sailing stories. It’s in your heart. Never fear, I am not going anywhere. I suspect many others feel the same.
I have been watching for the full 8 years and maz please don’t fret about the channel changing mode, if this weeks was anything to go by it’s still brilliant and Ava is still a super star. Thanks for sharing and thanks for being inspiring.
I always thought the channel was about you - and now it’s about you and Ava. Doesn’t matter whether you’re doing DIY, sailing, exploring or anything else😀 It will always be good…
Don’t worry. You both have plenty of charm that works well on camera. You’ll be fine as a channel even without so much DIY. Plus, you are already pretty good at scenic videography, and you’ll only get better with time. Footage of lovely coastal passages never gets old.
Mads, my wife and I watch your channel because we like you. I am a sailboat owner and am constantly doing my own DIY to keep her from becoming a submarine. That’s not why we watch you. You’re an interesting person who tells a story in an unusual but pleasant way. Watching your videos relaxes me and increases my overall happiness. Ava has added even more to this as she is so much like you. I know it’s stressful as your content changes; but, as long as you keep being you we will keep watching - even if you start making detailed videos on basket weaving.
You'll figure it out. It's what you do. And Ava is a warrior!
I’m 21 now, I started watching your channel when I was a kid before you bought Athena. 👍 now started preparing to buy my own sailboat with my girlfriend & looking to rebuild an engine soon
Do not worry to much, do not attempt to over engineer the channel, we follow you because of you as a person, you are kind, you care, and you are such a pleasure to watch you sharing your newly acquired knowledge . Share the maintenance, your feelings, your plan next, you up and down. What you have achieved is just truly amazing !!!
The best thing about this channel is just you and Ava being yourself! Don't try to over-think it or over-do it, it's brilliant just listening to you two going about your travels.
No matter what you post, I’ll be there
I think I’m addicted
Well done Eva! ;)
Mass: whatever you do and however you do it I’ll be along for the ride. Anyone with your patient endurance deserves a following.
Your transition from DIY to full time cruising is something I'm looking forward to. You have a great sense of humour which, frankly, is about all you need right now. Great channel, great people, keep it up!
You think we've been watching you carefully and painstakingly rebuild Athena for 5 years to give up when you start sailing? Don't worry Mads, we love you and are here for the duration.
The DIY is coming to an end. How sobering, the first episode I saw you were discussing the engineering review and recommendations on fiberglassing the wood structural components that had become wet. The start of 'oh glorious sanding'. Cheers, your dreams have come true, Ava is your wife and Athena is sea worthy. Kick back and enjoy the new adventures, and feel comfortable about sharing them with us. Cheers and congratulations.
DIY or sailing, I’ll never miss one of your videos. I love the DIY content, but I don’t think I’m alone in saying that many of us watch you because you’re a great guy and you and Ava are a very sweet couple. Take your time and experiment as you learn a new format. We’re not going anywhere.
It's the natural progression of your story, it's why we follow you. Don't worry about the content changing
Mas, the thousands of sailors that learn from all your DIY videos won’t abandon you if you go to a sailing channel. They owe you too much to do that. “Oh glorious sanding” is a household saying thanks to you. Happy travels.
We’ve become ‘ friends’, one of the peculiarities of social media. I’m along for whatever ride you guys wish to take us on. 🇨🇦
Mads, As long as you stay you and keep making videos of you and your wife enjoying your life, we'll be here.
Mads... we are going to keep watching. We watch it for your rye humor, story telling, and just friendly faces. You guys are almost like family now and we want to see you be you.
Mads, when you started doing DIY videos all those years ago you didn’t know how to tell a DIY story either. I’m excited and happy to see you all untie the lines and learn something new! You’re living the dream many of us have and we get to live vicariously through your adventures! Don’t worry about it, keep making videos and we’ll keep watching!
I had to pause your video when you discussed your apprehension of your “theme” changing from dyi to the adventures of sailing. Relax, we have been on this long journey with you on getting Athena ready to sail to finally get underway with you both and what the real day to day sailing adventures are really like. Can’t wait to be with you.
For what it is worth your Sunday video has been a bright spot an otherwise very miserable 2 / 3 years. Thank you from bottom of my heart. Please keep the videos coming. in whatever form, I am sure we will enjoy them
I love to see you guys wearing your life vests when your sailing or motoring on the ocean. I wish some of the younger generation of sailors would do the same. I can only guess they have no idea how hard it is to turn a boat around in even calm seas and retrieve someone that's in the water. Without a life vest the chance of surviving in the water for very long is next to zero . Keep setting the great examples of safe smart sailiors.
Jeez Louise! Yes, MOB drills!!
Yesss! Spot on comment regarding lifejacket non wearers these days.
I hope that they don't learn the hard way.
Mads, I've been watching you for years. Your DIY is fantastic, but you have always been so much fun to watch and that is why I come back every week. Ava is also such a delight, and I love her new perspective on everything you do. Just keep being yourselves and people will keep watching.
Awesome job to both of you making it across the channel; seasickness is no joke!
This episode was great. Just enjoy yourselves, be tourists, take some vids, voice over later. Works for me.
You will take to sailing videos like a duck to water. Your personalities are a key part of your success to date and that will not change, Simply tell everyone what you are thinking about as you plan, prepare and execute each leg. Eva seems very comfortable sharing her thoughts already. Also, never underestimate the power of excellent videography with ambient sound. No need to take straight through 20 minutes. Unlike a DYI project nature tells her own story if given the chance.
Don't worry about the change of focus! We enjoy watching your sailing life as it is. It is about relationships, interactions, challenges and overcoming challenges that makes it real. The DIY stuff is cool to see, but it's not everything. I believe most of us will continue to enjoy your changing content! Good luck!!!
Well said.
Mads .. I've been following you for a long while .. and I can assure you that the change of content to mostly sailing and less DIY will not make a difference to most of us. I think it's accurate to say we initially followed for the DIY .. but stayed for both your and Ava's personalities. Let the sailing begin 👍
Mads, you finally becoming a full time sailing channel is the only reason we’ve watched you every week! Don’t sweat it man, your going to be just as awesome as a sailing at channel as you were doing DIY. Just enjoy being there as much as you enjoyed getting there and your passion will shine! You both truly deserve your success.
Love listening to your narration, also Ava talking to the camera is enjoyable. Think travel blog, you will be showing the audience wonderful places- and when stuff breaks, leaks, or needs to be maintained, you know how to do that too.
So glad you guys got to see Dartmouth, it’s like stepping back in time 100 years! Also don’t sweat the seasickness too much, Lord Nelson was sea-sick every time he went to sea, so (statistically speaking) you’re made of even tougher sea legs than him 😉
I love the DIY jobs they my favorite, you will have loads to do for us to watch, it's a boat there is always something to fix.
I'm really enjoying Ava's obvious joy about sailing and exploring. You make a good pair!
The "Ava, in her natural habitat" had me waking the kids laughing mate, love it.
First comment, long time viewer. The way you narrate your current sailing videos is perfect. I love how you explain anything that you’re doing, whether it’s DYI, showing the local towns and yes, sailing as you already have been. Keep up the great work. Always entertaining. I never miss a Sunday.
Mads and Ava,
I see you watch "Cruising the Cut". A couple of David's friends have a channel called "Minimal List". They make hours and hours of canal cruising videos, but the BEST part (for me) is when they go ashore and visit some of the many lovely and historic towns near the canals they cruise. David Johns is good at that as well. "Gone with the Wynns" does an excellent job of this as well.
I have noticed that Ava is VERY GOOD at being this type of tour guide. Let her run with this. For me THIS is the key to making any kind of cruising videos. After all, you are pretty much always cruising to GET somewhere - to visit somewhere. So when you get there give us all a great tour of the ambiance, beauty and history of the place.
An oh, by the way, your excellent use of the English language (like a native!) coupled with your dry and unique use of words and sense of humor almost guarantees lots of happy listeners.
You two will do just super fine!!! Keep up the great work, love life and love each other!!
Ava … CONGRATULATIONS on a job well done! It is comforting to know that you’re a quick study and are learning the skills that will enrich the sailing for both of you, and may save both your lives should something go awry.
Mads … I’ve been with you since the beginning. Can’t afford to help out via Patreon (yet), but you’ve been such an inspiration through all that you’ve accomplished with both vessels that abandoning you as you two transition to more sailing that DIY would be criminal!
Keep up the great stories! Weekly, or even bi-weekly if it changes to that, I’m not going anywhere! 👍🏼👍🏼
Remember the reason so many people click in to watch is you are a natural story teller. Who else could make oh "glorious sanding" so enjoyable. So many of us are sailing vicariously through your journey and you have never let us down.
PS like you have always have done, good or bad just keep it real.
Mads, you have got this! You know how to shoot video, edit video, and tell a good story. You and Ava will do great!
While I enjoy your DIY content very much, the reason I enjoy it so much is because of how you produce and present the material. I look forward to seeing Athena sail, and the adventures you will share with us. Good luck finding your sea legs, I wish you more favorable seas and pleasant passages.
Mad’s, vey (very) powerful episode. And yes, you and your channel is in transition but that transition is what is most interesting. Casting off the lines and going, including the occasional seasickness, is part of you dream. A dream a lot of people have. Stop the DIY a bit, consider what you want to see/ do and make miles. It helps your seasickness, your confidence level and your channel. Of that I’m pretty sure and I will continue to follow you both. This is it, live that dream and don’t let RUclips fear get in between. Enjoy life, you’ve worked hard enough to get to this point. (Recommendation: watch your initial dream video and see where you are now, the third and final step man, just go! )
Mads, your a natural story teller, don't worry about it. Ava does a good job also
Mads, you’re doing what so many dreamers haven’t been able to do. Finish refitting a boat and actually sailing it. I, for one, look forward to seeing where the adventure takes you. Fair winds!
So far the transition to sailing works for me! Dont be scared of showing the boat battling the elements and all the technical things like furling and trimming the sails and how all the previous diy are handling the passage, wether they work as intended or not! Should be interesting!
Hi Mads! I've been watching for years and I'll continue to watch as you figure out this transition. I might be a minority, but I would appreciate long format videos when you do your big ocean crossings. They're peaceful in a sort of ASMR way. Also the natural geographic interlude was funny 🤣.
Mads, no worries brother, 99.9% will continue to watch your videos. Keep doing you. Oh, and so sweet of you with your kind words on Ava. She is doing great!
Dont worry Mads, ive been watching since those early days and i intend to keep watching. Happy sailing .
Just you guys showing us where your at, and the little gems such as Agatha Christie's boat house, someplace I would never in my life end up is wonderful! You are living a life some of us would love to live but can't for whatever reasons, just be you and enjoy!
Seasickness advice: less motor, more sailing. The wind in the sails helps keep the boat more stable than without.
We have just watched your latest video and feel that you are getting a bit paranoid about changing the content of your videos to more saily, don't you worry, we are just delighted to watch what you two are up to next, good luck on trip to Eire , best wishes David and Wendy in Orkney
I wouldn’t worry about the transition to a sailing channel, I’m sure whatever you and Ava do will be very interesting. Ava does a good job of telling us a little bit of the history of the places we wouldn’t normally see.
Not to worry my friend. We will continue to watch you guys no matter. We watched you rebuild this boat now we will watch you sail it :-)
thanks 4 sharing
Jay
You guys are thoughtful, intelligent people, you will also share something interesting, I'm staying on as a patron regardless.
Don’t sweat the transition from DIY to sailing, Mads. Remember that you won’t be just another sailing channel, you will be Mads and Ava Sailing and that my friends makes all the difference. I am quite certain that I speak for more viewers than myself when I say that we will continue to follow you, partly for the content of your adventures but more importantly to see what happens to you as people of whom we have grown very fond.
Great video, excited for the next phase and so cool to see Ava is such a natural sailor. Also great to see Mads out of his comfort zone for maybe the first time - how character is built! And whatever content you produce, we'll be happy to watch. If we just wanted DIY instructions we'd read a manual - its your characters and story we appreciate.
Mads and Ava it will be great relax and enjoy the journey.
Fair skies and calm seas
As one of your many followers since obliex, I have no doubt that your “sailing” videos will be most entertaining and informative and funny. I personally can’t wait for more sailing videos from you both. Fair winds and following seas. Your doing a wonderful job!,
Hey mads, just remember most of us land lovers we are living vicariously through your eyes show us everyday what it is you do we will sit back and enjoy it with love and desperation for the next episode trust me on this one.
Mads and Eva you’re both charming on camera with interesting skills to share. I look forward to your future experiences.
Good luck getting used to the new phase and don't stress it to much, you'll figure it out!
The first truly offshore sailing I did was when I was 14. My parents had hooked me up with a yacht delivery from St. Michaels Maryland to Hamilton Harbor in Bermuda. I was fine with the Chesapeake Bay part of the voyage (I grew up sailing there) but, when we entered the Atlantic, I became intensely seasick for two days. Had to still cover my watches too. What I'm saying is, is that you need to power through this setback - give it three+ days at sea. Punch through, man.
This! (And maybe some scopolamine)
Mads for me your channel is all about personality, character, charisma, your knowledge and approach to things you do, your commitment and thoroughness in getting them done. You have a calm nature and pleasing manner. So you see it doesn't matter about the subject matter it's you and Eva that I enjoy ...!!
I think every sailor gets seasick at some point of their sailing life. I'm usually fine on passages and as you've mentioned refocusing your attention to hand steering really helps. But the most absurd thing is that I get seasick very frequently at mooring ball/anchorage. So don't worry, happens to all of us :)
Mads, Ava is such a star and we love the way you are so appreciative of her. Don't worry about the future films. You are so talented, you will find your way. I for one won't very stop looking forward to each week's episode.
I’m not nor ever will be a sailer but love your Vlogs so will continue to follow, good luck and safe sailing.
Hi Mads, I have a high level of confidence that you will smoothly transition to a sailing channel. Both you and Eva are great story tellers. Your long time viewers are happy to be along for the ride. And we don't even have to worry about sea sickness.
I'm a big fan of this channel, been following for a while. You have, via your in-depth videos, taught me many 'how-to' lessons of excellent technical content. I'm looking forward to the future of this channel where you continue this educational content and transition from diy to how-to-sail (think of telling us about your: choices, reasonings, strategies, techniques, opinions, pros/cons) - I would value that.
Mads, just be yourself , that's what we all tune in for . You and Ava are each others strongest allies and you guys will tell a great story together . To tell the truth the channel is better since Ava became a regular part of it , not that it was bad before but you are more confident with her by your side I think . Thanks for the great episode !
I have no doubt that this is going to be a fantastic sailing channel with occasional DIY projects from air conditioning to a broken hose clamp. You have nothing to worry about because you are starting off with way more experience than most and you are quite a humerous (odd like me) person.
We’ll keep watching as long as you keep making videos. We could never stop watching! (Ava has such awesome taste in everything.)❤️❤️❤️
I found that anxiety (including feelings of responsibility) was certainly a factor in my seasickness. When you're having fun you don't seem to get sick. Good luck.
been watching you for years now Mads, so happy when you met Ava as she is top notch....You both Got This
A tip I learned after many days fishing from a small boat was to not look down. In other words, keep your head upright. Fresh air also helps.
I've been enjoying your content since Obelix. Honestly what keeps me coming back - aside from the progress on all your projects - is just your good humor and the methodical way you approach things, even when things get super frustrating. With Ava adding her perspective I don't think you will lack for content. Things have switched from you making 90% of the content decisions (projects) to the content basically coming to you, in the form of unknown/unplanned voyage experiences.
First of all, it's going to be interesting seeing how this tech-heavy boat holds up. I don't think you'll have any problem generating interesting content. Even if traveling and living aboard turns out to be not as much fun as you thought it was going to be (which was the case for me) it will be entertaining to see you document the reasons why that is, and see if you come up with solutions. At least half the problems you'll have are social and cultural, so it's good that you have each other. Good luck, we'll be here watching no matter what.
Oh and I’ve been around since obelisk, it’s like I know you, your attention to detail and video skills kept me here, it’s not only about the diy but the whole “journey” don’t sweat the small stuff.
I often get sea sick and when I started I got sea sick everytime. It will get better and the more you sail will only help. A couple of things that really help me are hand steering and not eating before sailing. If I’m really hungry and haven’t eaten anything for a day before leaving I won’t throw up.
imma fan of cinnamon red hot candies (~1cm each) or even plain fresh ginger sliced and made into tea
both help

I think the transition from mostly DIY to mostly cruising is right on track. Well done as always.
I find sea sickness is much like VR sickness, as it gets better with time, but that doesn’t help much in the short run. Some claim that putting a good earplug in one ear helps them. I have not tried this, but it is worth a try and is cheap to test. They claim it helps the brain to shut down confusing signals that cause seasickness.
I've only ever been seasick three times (now) so I don't think I'm super prone to it but it's certainly not a super fun good time so I'll give the ear plug a try :)
@@SailLife The idea with the earplug is that you place it the ear opposite to which you use for writing so if your write with your right hand, the plug goes in the left ear.
I am both an avid sailor and also long afflicted with the diy boat repair bug. So I have enjoyed immensely being along for the ride for the amazing job you have done on Athena. Now I am just as much looking forward to watching you and Ava on your travels. I know you’ll do really with the new focus on production. Ava has great instincts for travel narrative already and you seem to share a sense of humour. Looking forward to another fun ride.
Love you both. Love the content. Ignore the haters. Keep doing what you want to do.
Thank you! Good luck!
I don't see any haters.
@@edfrhes thanks for the reply.... hater
I'm not a hater. I like this channel.
You know I have been following you guys for a long time and I love this channel. You are good people and it's fun to live vicariously through you. I have learned so much from this channel and its given me ideas for my own boat. Thanks for everything!
Seasickness is an inner ear/balance issue. Try an earplug in one ear. This helps balance air pressure. It sounds weird, but it works.
Exactly. Works every time.
Haven't heard or tried this one yet. For me the seasickness went away when i started eating (again). I started with an apple, that worked for me. After that i noticed that when i have a full stomach, i felt less seasickness. And one other maybe somewhat positive, for me seasickness (untill now) always had an end, and after that i didn't feel sick anymore, the longest (for me) was 24 hrs before it stopped.
Mads don't forget it is a sailboat there will always be DIY. But I was worried how Ava would fit in and it has been beautiful. She is great on exploring (Ava Travels) and you have been talking to us for years you will be just fine. I follow 31 sailboats all over the world and you two are right up in the top 7 (Delos, Ran, Nahoa, Project Attacus, La vagabonde, Nandji and Sail Life, and the best one is the one I am watching at that time. Things to remember :Navigate with us so we understand where you are even when going on a hike , Love the natural humor you have together keep it up, talk about the smallest of items, it may be another's eureka moment, Most of all be your regular selves it has been successful. Remember you will be having others join you that have been waiting for your sail. Cheers
For most ppl seasickness lasts around 3 days...just have to power thru it then you're OK.
I'll just think of it as a 3 day diet ;)
@@SailLife No, pls start eating. In my experiences that helped to solve the sicknes. o_0
@@SailLife Also, some good hard work seemed to help me Mads. I was sailing with my uncle when I was 18, on a very rough Chesapeake Bay and was just miserable. It was hot and humid as hell and all I could do was lay down in the cabin. Eventually, my uncle put his foot down and told me to get up and get to work! He had me scrubbing decks, coiling lines, lubing shackles, you name it. After an hour I felt fine and continued to feel fine for the next 24 hours even though the rollers kept getting bigger. Food for thought (sorry to bring up food, haha).
Cheers, Sev
For your sailing vlog Madz, just be yourselves and say it how you see it, we'll watch and enjoy, we're along for the ride and you are the captain, sorry Ava is the captain, whoops.
Mith busters did an episode on ginger being a good old-time remedie to sea sickness. Have you ever tried? I wish you well.
Mads, re: producing SAILING content. The way you began this episode at dawn, with your navigational lights, and red lights in the cockpit was perfect. Combine your capabilities to explain navigational decisions, shots of sail changes, views of sea state, entering harbors, etc., with Ava's joy of exploring various places on land, and your channel views will grow far beyond your expectations. * Loved this video today *
Anyone who has taken the Liverpool to Dublin ferry will attest to the water state. It's a long crossing with invariable large seas. Not many escape a good quese!
You guys are awesome!!! We love you!! If we count this video as your first video transitioning from DIY to sailing, I say you knocked it out of the park! Great job!!
Yep your weather window was not so good, Strong westerlies at the moment but that will be changing. Would give it a day for the swell to subside before venturing into the Irish sea though as it will be confused and lumpy. As someone else said hand steering and focus on sailing the boat helps greatly. You will also learn a lot more. You both need to be able to do this for hours at a time. If you are in tune with the boat your brain anticipates the movement. Sitting around being a passenger is not great as all you think about is your discomfort and how long you need to endure.
Sail trim, navigation and helming is what you need, that and ginger biscuits and an Apple now and then. Chocolate bars to lift the mood and tea. Also try to match the sails with the wind. Not too much but not too little either. A bit more sailing Zen. Good luck crossing.
Mads, just like your worries when you started the DIY you made it GREAT. You shall succeed and we will all be here to support your awesome efforts. Stay Safe, Semper Fidelis. Ya'll will be Great.
Interested to hear what prep you did for this given you aborted the Atlantic trip with Eric on Fiona for this reason. You need to get more miles under your belt and more than just day sails. Hope it works out. Andy UK
Been watching you from the beginning Mads, I have no doubt your sailing vids will be every bit as good as your DIY vids. Fair winds
