Put a tiny barrier fence on the side of all the roads, a foot high would make it not able to cross it but we could step over it. Then make tunnels every mile or so over or under the roads. They don't have to be big just big enough for a tortoise to cross. Trust me, they will figure out where the tunnels are.

Why not put up a small barrier along the roadside so the tortoises cant enter the roadway? Why not close off parts of the park to humans? Why not relocate the tortoises a little farther from the roads? Putting up signs is the bare minimum, but they should have already been up a long time ago if they knew this was an ongoing issue.

If they have some captive and they’re breeding then they won’t be completely extinct, but if there aren’t any captive and breeding then they should consider getting a good bunch and keeping them to repopulate

    • @jackiediaz1098

There are a bunch of organizations that are working on preserving hatchlings and captive bred tortoises. The issue is that at the moment they cannot release these tortoises without risking the health of the wild ones, and these captive bred tortoises do not know how to survive in the wild. They are working and studying them to help one day cure the upper respiratory infection problem that threatens the desert tortoise. At the moment common California natives like us can just become more educated on them and help where we can in saving this species.
