Written by Sting and Mark Knopfler.
While in New York City, Mark Knopfler saw 👀 some events. He wrote the lyrics based in his observations. He added guitar riffs. The chords are the same ones from Synchronicity 2, which was written by Sting.
Dire Straits and The Police released their debut albums in the same year 45 years ago. Both lead singers taught literature in the UK 🇬🇧 before changing to music 🎶 as their main jobs.

Live Aid was an amazing event, 90,000 at Wembley Stadium in London, England and about the same at John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I remember watching about 95% of the show, including the Dire Straits with Sting, and I was just blown away. Saw three different shows at JFK, two Grateful Dead shows, and U2 on their Joshua Tree Tour. Somehow, U2 got a Jet Airliner to fly RIGHT OVER THE STADIUM right at the start of "Bullet The Blue Sky". Don't know how they pulled that one off. Oh yeah, and Bruce Springsteen showed up too. RIP to JFK Stadium.

Love it! One of my favourite tunes by them for sure, the style is different to most

The reason they had Sting sing the vocals is the ‘I want my MTV’ tune is from the Police song ‘Don’t Stand so Close To Me’. Sting was in Montserrat when Dire Straits recorded the song

Dire Straits played Live Aid in the afternoon at Wembley Stadium because they were in the middle of a residency at Wembley Arena at the time. They had to "cross the car park" according to Mark in order to do their own show in the same evening!

Dire Straits was the band on stage at Wembley right before Queen, before Dire Straits U2 were on

The lyrics came from Mark being in an appliance store and overhearing the conversations of the floor workers in the next aisle.

Some of Sting's solo songs you should listen to are "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You," "Fields of Gold," "Shape of My Heart,"
"Brand New Day, "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free," "I Hung My Head," "Englishman In New York." That will give you
a taste of his solo style.

Hello brother, this was so amazing to get to watch again. I'm a fan of "The Police" and what's not to love about Sting. lol😍
Here's another suggestion for another live performance, if interested. "Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) & Eric Clapton - Walk Of Life" I thought you might like seeing Knopfler and Clapton play together. This is a live performance at Wimbley Stadium in 1988 and is a birthday tribute to Nelson Mandela.

Hadn’t seen that one, that was great.

If you get a chance, check out the Nelson Mandela concert version with Eric Clapton. Even a snapped string doesn't stop Clapton

Personally I would say Dire Straits at Wembley 85 was not that great. I still think the studio version of Money for Nothing is the best. In terms of live performances the best is Knebworth with Clapton, then Wembley 88 (with Clapton again)

We have a decent song. But how can we convince MTV to play our video?
I know! Let’s hire Sting to sing the letters “MTV” in the intro!! Then they will HAVE to play it!
    That’s brilliant!

    • @jjc5407
      @jjc5407 Год назад +2

It was more a case of "I want to the 'I want my MTV' lyrics to be sung to the tune of The Police's 'Don't Stand So Close To Me'. Hey wouldn't it be great to get Sting to sing them. What's that you say? He's vacationing on this very island where we're recording the album? What's the hotel number? Hey Sting, it's Mark. I've written this banging song. How'd you like to pop over and sing on it with us? I'm using a bit of one of your tunes so you'll get a joint writing credit too."

He did a very moving performance of that song last year in support of Ukraine (and Russians protesting the war): "Sting - Russians (Guitar / Cello Version)"
