I had heard so much about this railroad from my parents as a child, and the picnics they attended on it, but I cannnot ever remember seeing photographs. This video is great! My teenagers also enjoyed it, and they can show it to their friends.
Absolutely amazing. Thank you for putting pictures to stories my grandmother told me about when she was a child. Always mentioned the railroad and trains in Bim. Could never picture it until now. Great post.
Thanks for sharing. I really enjoyed this after attempting the Great Train Hike yesterday, Feb. 17, 2013. This is actual video footage of the train in operation. It was made in 1933 as part of a production called Windmill of Barbados.
Wonderful and evocative video which sparked my own memories of another era as the train wound its way from Bridgetown to Bathsheba. I am a Bajan who left the island in 1961.My school days at Lodge School from 1955-1961 were spent in total ignorance of my island home's geography, social, cultural and economic history. It's never too late to learn.
Thank you - a great series of photos. There's a display of photos of the railway in the basement of Sunbury Plantation House; and in the garden near the mouldering farm machinery is a well preserved pony truck with flanged wheels. Not sure what gauge it is though. BTW its a pity no movie footage has survived of the railway.
Very nice video, I have Jim's book so enjoyed this very much, thank you. Did you know that just prior to the Barbados Government purchasing the railway in 1916 (from private ownership), it was arranged for the General Manager and Chief Engineer of the Trinidad Government Railway, Mr. H.R. Marwood (M.I.C.E.), to visit Barbados and report on the state of the railway? Mr. Marwood arrived on 23rd of September and his report was submitted to the Government of Barbados on November 10th 1916.
Not really but you can still see remnants of the track on the East coast between Conset Bay and Bath. There is an annual railway hike from Bridgetown to Belleplaine, which took place yesterday (12-02-19).
Excellent! We were at Atlantis Hotel just a couple of weeks ago and the spot we parked our car must have been exactly where the train used to run. Given the traffic conditions and the worsening state of the roads, it's a shame they can't bring it back!
Train track ran a lot closer to the shore than where you parked your car(higher up). There's a road/track right between hotel and shoreline - that's where it ran.
@@devets4d It's five years ago, but as I recall we had to park on the road below the hotel, i.e. on the ocean side, because it was Sunday brunch and the actual parking lot was jammed! So I still think we were parked where the train ran.
Wow! This is so cool, St Nicholas Abbey has part of the train route around the plantation for tours, it is very beautiful.. A refurbished train car with the conductor, engineer etc. I rode it in August 2019 for my Birthday.. You can also get a tour of the Abbey.

1846 to 1937 - there were five different operator companies
during its time.

Does a movie exist of the train?
Interesting video, is there anything left of the old railway ?

Let's put it back. Use LRT. It is cheap.
Not to my knowledge.
