The art is gorgeous, the writing is fantastic, and the sound is hypnotic. It’s not for “exploding helicopter” gamers, but for history nerds it’s a triumph. But I'm pretty disappointed to hear about the lack of music in this one. I adore when smaller indie or AA titles can really put a stamp on their games with music and audio (the soundtrack from Hades comes to mind). It would have been interesting to see some classic 'designers notes' from Josh Sawyer about the lack of voice acting and limited sound with no music. I suspect VA may very well be a question of budget but the lack of music may be a design choice, as good and impactful as game can be the lack of it can be immersive as well in the right circumstances. For example I always play Fallout 4 Survival without music and it enhances the experience for me personally. And if Pentiment gets too silent I can always play it together with a playlist of actual period music (the advantage of being really into this period of history.) It is great to see that Josh Sawyer got the opportunity to create such a niche game, not only because it is very much my cup of tea but also because it is the kind of passion project that improves creativity.
I started it and I just kept feeling like stopping at any point yet kept going for some reason. Got about 3 hours in then felt like I’d seen enough. Now I still have some urge to continue playing so I don’t know what to think about it.
Hey Matty why not try 13 Sentinels: Aegis rim. It’s the only game I can compare to Pentiment. It’s a side scrolling, visual novel style story game with RTS. Awesome game, gripping story and mystery and some of the best use of time travel in a video game.

I’m a Medievalist soooo I love it ❤ I feel more games should have this style/genre for history lovers
I think it’s definitely my kind of game, so I’ll be playing
I started this game and I love it! I just found out about it today. Now, I’m hooked! I love history, and reading so this game is so for me!
Oh damn what's that music in background? Sounds so familiar but modified
I need an alpha protocol remake and a sequel such a fun game where choice really mattered
Same. Alpha Protocol was seriously underappreciated.
@@Soulache the relationship building style was fun too
@@DevDinish I love choices that affect the experience for individual players, it makes the experience more personal. Mass Effect did it best but Alpha Protocol came closest.
@@Soulache LMAO. no way. mass effect choices mattered so very little in comparison to AP
This game is a perfect 10/10 for me. This game is AMAZING. Definitely more on the intellectual side than the action side of RPGs. But i love that this game makes you think deeply.
And if Pentiment gets too silent I can always play it together with a playlist of actual period music (the advantage of being really into this period of history.)
It is great to see that Josh Sawyer got the opportunity to create such a niche game, not only because it is very much my cup of tea but also because it is the kind of passion project that improves creativity.
Where’s this song in the background from? I’m not remembering the name
I just noticed that's Cruel Angels Thesis in the background. Good shit.
Are the text readable on the Steam Deck? I can never read game texts always so small.
This looks to me like a Josh Sawyer passion project. I am so down for that!
Is that Cruel Angel's Thesis in the background? Really nice.
Love the Evangelion background tune in this one great vid Matty 👌🏾👏🏾👍🏾💯🔥
So any one else noticed A CRUEL ANGEL THESIS melody playing in the background!!! Me and Matty are men of the same culture I See !
I wasn’t impressed when announced and now me and my friend are hooked on the story. With a friend this game is a lot of fun! Never played a game like this either and I love it
Loving that Evangelion theme in the background of this vid!
Just noticed the background music is from persona (4?) who made this cover?
It was Coronel Mustard in the Library with the Candle Stick. 🤔
Great video! Pentiment looking good. Does anybody know what the backing track to this video is?
Martin Luther like Martin Luther King Jr. were some of the most important figures in history. Since you mentioned that I may pick this up.
Alpha Protocol was fun. It felt super rough around the edges but I actually think they could do some pretty cool stuff with that IP if they felt like it. Been a while since I thought about that game. I'll check out pretty much anything Obsidian does, even if it ends up not being my cup o tea.
I READ text much faster than listening slowly. In almost all game si skip dialogue as i am blasting through subtitles. so no problem here
I can see that this game would be a turn off for some but man its right up my alley.
seeing all the handholding of god of war Ragnarok i am glad this isnt made for everyone
That's all AAA games, except for From Software games.
If you want a more difficult experience with God of War: Ragnarok, you pick a higher difficulty. The people who are complaining about “handholding” chose an easy difficulty. They literally are complaining about a self-made problem.
@@waynelewis9110 they talk all the time, too many cutscenes, jeus we played 4 hours on weekendand 2.5 hours were speaches and cutscenes. they never leave you alone to slve the puzzle, they talk all the time.
This is the type of game I scheduled as my final game of 2022 during Christmas break to play on my iPhone / Backbone via Xbox Cloud Gaming. It is a game to slowly plod through, not one to seek to finish and/or play amongst other titles. It’s why the freak Chris Ray Gun will not finish it.
Like the retro graphics like "The Pale Beyond" which is due out soon.
Another game probably worth reviewing when it's out
Someone help me, wheres the ost from this video
nice Evangelion music box intro~
Browser based game of the year?
History was the only class I actually cared about in school enough to get an A in it so I'm down 100%. History buffs UNIT!!!!
Neon Genesis evangelion track never gets old.
I was wondering why the background music was so familiar. Had to check down here to see if I was crazy
Easily one of the best games I've played in some time...
Just watched your game of the year episode. How is sonic frontiers ahead of Pentiment which naturally then missed your list?
Hold on Matty is that Neon Genesis Evangelion's opening you were using for the background music?
Loved Pillar of eternity games so i cant wait for another Josh Sawyer game
