    How to Fix Your Picking Technique and How to Play Fast
    In this video I will show you how to fix you picking technique or how you can have a proper picking technique. I've been teaching guitar for more than 20 years an 99% of my new students were holding the pick index and thumb dominant.
    To play fast properly you need to use your wrist since the wrist is the most important element of the picking technique.
    When you play with the finger dominant picking technique you can't engage your wrist. To fix that you have to lock the pick under the thumb joint. Additionally, the rest of the fingers should be intact to minimize finger movement. With this technique, you'll get more precise and louder sound.
    Once you engage your wrist and improve strength and dexterity you can start relaxing your picking hand in time.
    Please use your wrist and try to increase your speed gradually.
    If you are struggling to play fast you can check my How To Play Fast video

    Another really good and overlooked tip is when you're trying to pick like this, if you can't do it fully relaxed and effortless, play to a metronome really slow until you can. Literally force yourself to no even touch the guitar unless you can play without flexing your muscles. That helped me not only get better but I broke barriers I never expected to break. Thanks for your content btw!

      I did for 17 years then helped with a clinic and while warming up I lost my pick so strummed without it.
      The other instructor looked over at me and said, “Wait! Put the pick back in your hand, I need to see something.”
      It was then that I learned without a pick, I used my wrist perfectly. Spent the next year relearning my picking technique. Sounded awful at first, but then it clicked.

    I just took the same logic i used for tremolo picking and instead of applying it to one note per string i did 3 note per string then 4 and now 2 years later practicing shredding and sweep picking learning songs are so easy now because getting things up to speed always delayed the process and i could only play that certain lick or riff fast now when i learn a song i can play fast in general now so not only is it easier to learn full songs and faster but the ease makes it easier for you to take in the lick and play it properly in order to get the right tempo and feel under your fingers and get it up to the same speed every time timing is one if the most important things when it comes to making runs you want to know exactly what note to emphasize in your run and that comes with learning good timing shredding is definitely important and we say shredding but really its just alternate picking at high tempos learn that and A LOT of the techniques you learn will be substantially easier to learn and play.

    My teacher does a lot of the fast picking by moving his thumb only. It definitely can work. And its extremely effective if you get it to work because your entire hand is staying still and all you move is the thumb and maybe first finger a bit. It is very hard to control. I cant do it. But imo to say that is the "wrong" technique is not ideal

    • @OzzGuitar
      @OzzGuitar  10 месяцев назад +1

      There is no "wrong" in this video. It says you can't engage your wrist and arm because you use your fingers. You have to improve your wrist and arm usage and master it. After you create good muscle memory you can add fingers as the last unit.

    • @whitetiger5104
      @whitetiger5104 Год назад +2

      Very normal. Acoustics are naturally more finger picking based instruments anyway due to the higher gauge strings and action. Vice versa for electrics. The razor sharp strings mean a pick is better as they are more precise. So you're doing the perfect thing, very normal and great spot for the beginning stages.

    I'm not saying this isn't good advice, but it's worth noting that both Tim Henson and Ichika Nito use "finger-dominant" picking at times. It might be worthwhile to look into where and when (and why) they use this technique as both are great players.

    • @CULTmk

      both of those players play with their wrist. Also did you know that Ichika Nito speeds up his videos?

    • @WedToTheShred
      @WedToTheShred 5 месяцев назад

      @CULTmk I did say "at times". I know they use their wrist. Check out Tim henson's playthrough titled Playing God Unplugged and watch his picking hand when he plays Scotty's solo near the beginning of the song. Like I said, he uses this "finger-dominant" picking from time to time. He isn't locked to one specific picking technique. I'm mainly a wrist guy myself, I just thought it was something worth noting since this video (if I remember correctly after 9 months) was talking about how awful it is.

      @CULTmk I'm sorry, is scalpel picking not bending the thumb and bringing the finger inward? The guy was showing something similar in this video, just not exactly the same method of movement. It's still being picked by movement of the fingers. Do you often argue with 9 month old posts simply to split hairs?

Almost all great pickers hold the pick with the tip (and on the side) of their index finger pointing toward the tip of their pick or slightly more towards their thumb.

    Making your picking "sound louder" really just means that you lack the ability for using any kind of dynamics when playing. Which, might be what you want, but I'd suggest if you stop fretting about how your hands are moving and listen to the sound you're creating then 'locking your fingers' is probably not what you actually want.
    Unless you're purely into shredding fast notes with a ton of gain and pick noise then the chances are at least one if not a few of the guitarists you listen to plays with varying dynamics in his/her picking - they may even use their fingers to pluck some of the notes, and if you want to incorporate that level of dynamics into your own playing then you need to be able to pick hard or soft with control and finesse. If that's your goal I'd suggest your primary focus should be on the sound you're creating when you're playing, not focusing on your wrist, fingers or anything else.
    Note too: Even if you just want to shred the idea there's a single correct way to hold the pick is nonsense - there's a huge variety of technique and theory about it, 'reverse dart player' etc etc - most of it suffers from the flaw I suggest above (it pays no attention to the sound created and thus the players tend to just make a noise) but it certainly shows that there is variety - I'd steer away from these too if your goal is playing musically.

  • @RSilversurfe
    @RSilversurfe 11 месяцев назад +1

    not realy,....look at Yngwie picking,...he utilize both thumb, wrist and the elbow. So it all works as long u are relaxed!!! And if u want to sound louder u dig in more deeply and more shalow to sound less loud. It has nothing to do with how hard u pick!

    • @OzzGuitar
      @OzzGuitar  10 месяцев назад

      You are not wrong.
      I know Yngwie’s picking style very well he is also adding arm movement for the fast runs but this is the most common mistake to think you can play like Malmsteen... He is 1 in 100 billion talent but most of us are normal human beings.
      So first you have to improve your wrist movement then you can add fingers if you are already master at picking... Starting with finger-dominant picking blocks wrist movement and improvement so most guitar players end up with bad technique.

      @@OzzGuitar I pick like Yngwie, nothing special about that, it came natural to mE. just like it did for Yngwie, and hundreds of other guitaristS.
      u are making it harder than it is matE. u pick the way it feels most natural to u (look at Freedman and MAB looks akward to me but to them it feels natural), only thing important and I can't stress it enough is to play relaxeD!! Learm to alt pick and than when u'r comfortable with that, u can start paying attention to micro detailS. it shouldn't be harder than thaT.
      if u gonna take a roll of a teacher u should do it seriously, don't make it harder than it already iS.
