It is strange to think that during the whole 20th century, Portugal took part in a World Cup only twice, 1966 and 1986. In the 21st century, it is almost impossible to imagine a tournament without the Portuguese. How times have changed.

@@singingindark12 That is certainly a factor. Also I suspect that the Bosman ruling changed the situation in Portugal‘s favor. Before it, Portuguese players were more or less limited to playing in there league. It is not a small league, but like the Dutch league doesn‘t belong to the Big Five. Nowadays you‘ll find Portuguese player everywhere, which of course is good for the national team.

Eusébio was a class player
In his younger days Eusebio showed tremendous ability but he never lived up to his early promise. Those in the know recognise that he blew out, even before the 1966 World Cup. Against North Korea here he turned it on only when he realised the Koreans were purists who wouldn't kick him.
In the second half of the semi-final against England, Portuguese captain Mario Coluna remonstrated with him to go out and win the game for Portugal, instead of restricting himself to taking corners, free-kicks and throw-ins.

Portugal was the best team in the 66 World Cup but England hijacked the tournament so only they could win. Obvuiously they have not won ever since.

Cuando el partido iba 3-0 a favor de Corea del Norte,no lo podía creer,pero Eusebio se encargó de poner las cosas en su lugar poco después,un gran equipo esa selección de Portugal,a mi parecer la mejor de ese mundial y que mereció ser campeón mundial,pero los partidos se ganan con goles y no con merecimientos
