What Is A Basset Clarinet? | Discover Instruments | Classic FM

Mark van de Wiel, principal clarinettist of the Philharmonia Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta, introduces his instrument: the basset clarinet.
The basset clarinet is most notably associated with the clarinet virtuoso Anton Stadler (1753 - 1812), who was a good friend of Mozart.
In fact, Mozart wrote his famous Clarinet Concerto in A major for the basset clarinet - but until its revival in the mid-20th century, the instrument was largely forgotten about.

A great video that clearly shows the difference between the basset and normal clarinet. this begs the question: Can a basset clarinet be used in place of a normal clarinet in all playing situations...? While Basset clarinet in A is the most common, there are manufacturers that make basset clarinets in Bb as well...
