I'm one of the people that had SEVERE ADVERSE reactions to prozac. Within a half hour of taking the pill, I had a HORRIFIC episode of my brain going crazy and instantly trying to kill me (I had to fight my own body from clawing myself and trying to kill myself to end the madness). The horror of that episode can't be adequately put into words, and sadly I've had this same adverse reaction to three other drugs, which has left me with PTSD. Prozac made my life a billion times worse.
When I told my psychiatrist that this drug made me want to kill myself, that I had to fight my body from running to the kitchen and grabbing a butcher knife, his response was something along the lines of, "well I think you need to let this be in your system for it to work", and he actually tried to tell me to stay on the drug.
The fact that I told him that this drug INSTANTLY made me have to fight my own body from stabbing myself with a butcher knife, and that he said I should "try to stay on it", has left me DUMBFOUNDED, and this was the first major wakeup call of learning when to tell doctors no.

Because I educated myself on bipolar medications, I was able to have an honest discussion with a leg up and be able to be medicated how I wanted and needed to be. If you need these kinds of meds, get a doctor specializing in medication management. They’re so much more helpful when it comes to this kind of thing.

I lost count how many friends have been on life long head meds since Prozac was introduced. I firmly believe the late 80s thru the 90s was the dark age of psychiatry where instead of treatment, there were drugs. Instead of diagnoses, there was guesswork.. and more drugs. All of a sudden, every young boy was attention deficient, hyperactive, depressed, or simply too angry. Now, years later, most friends, men since boyhood and women since early adulthood, are still on a cocktail of head meds, convinced they need them to survive. There is a reason the world is in the shape it's in.

Honestly, I still have a grudge against my child psychologist to not put me on SSRI. I first got them prescribed when I was 24 or so. In France. In FRANCE where docs don't debate for years and sometimes just do. I have had psychotherapy since I was 6 and it helped okayish. Only on SSRI I could finally put unlogical anxieties away and only in combo with Vyvanse (ADHD diagnosis took until I was 29) I don't have racing thoughts. Some shit you can only solve with biochemistry and as a scientist I prefer to experiment with drugs than exposing my vulnerabilities to a psychologist I did not trust who made things lot worse. There is no point in trying to go out if you are only left with your thoughts. There is no point in trying to meditate when this "unconditional acceptance" feels like giving up and staying in a shit situation. There is no point in doing all this crap that is advertised against depression, anxiety etc if you have untreated ADHD and every method to try just makes you feel like a failure because you blame yourself for not functioning and not doing enough. Whatever you do, it is never enough. And THIS is what some people need these crappy drugs for. I didn't like trading in my sexuality but I did it willingly over and over again because I'd rather have no libido and sex life at all than being crippled by anxiety each and every damn day that just makes me wanna kill myself. I have seen severe cases of depression and anxiety in the clinic and if these cases are left untreated by science then we didn't try hard enough as researchers and have failed as humans. Humans are partly biochemical machines and we know so much about chemistry and have tons of computational power. Every life lost to suicide due to depression, every case that could be treated by ketamine and didn't get sufficient treatment because ketamine is schedule 3, outlawed in the 70s etc, each of these cases is a failure for the scientific community and humanity as a whole! There are few illnesses as crappy as mental illnesses and they all deserve to be treated. I never want to hear again I should just try harder, not think about X, think about it less when there are case studies where a woman who never dared to go to the supermaket got treated with an opioid, went out the first time in 20 years and when they took the opioid away she was like before. Case studies like that are the reason why I will never blame anyone for failing at X. Why I will never tell someone - just try harder, push yourself harder, you are too lazy and all the other crap.

Doctors are susceptible to medical fads, and prescribed it because everyone else was prescribing it (though if you confront them with that, they are indignant and can't believe you would say anything so inaccurate and insulting). It was WIDELY known to disable sexual response, but patients were told "it only affects .03% of patients" and to just be happy they were feeling better and not be so greedy. You can learn to live without sexual pleasure and partner intimacy, can't you? It's a small price to pay. Then it came out that sexual dysfunction had only been "studied" for 3 weeks and that the rate of sexual disability was more than 30%.

🙏❤ "Sadness is from happenstance; whatever happened or did not happen for you, grief. Depression is the body saying F-- you, I don't want to be this character anymore. I don't want to hold up this avatar that you've created in the world. It's too much for me. Deep rest. Your body needs to be depressed. It needs deep rest from the character that you've been trying to play... My father just lighting up the room or wrapping everyone in a story and going, oh, that's the thing I want to do.. My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn't believe that that was possible for him, and so he made a conservative choice. He got a safe job. When I was 12 years old, he was let go from that safe job. And we had do everything we could to survive.. I saw his love and humor and how it altered the world around me, and I thought - that's something to do, that's something worth my time.. Now fear is going to be a player in your life, but you get to decide how much. You can spend your life imagining ghosts. And the decisions we make in this moment, are based in either love or fear." -Jim Carrey
