      I'm a decade too late but i really can't agree with that. To me, it sounds like he's singing from the perspective of someone in an abusive or unhealthy relationship. The arrow metaphor is the perfect example of this; he's been struck by an arrow that is slowly killing him, but it would also be extremely painful and harmful to remove, like it is to break up with an abusive partner

    • @warman13x
      @warman13x 8 лет назад +18

      +Leonard Katz I agree with you. Bo Burnham is one of my favorite comedians because, like Tim, he goes beyond just comedy. I'm not sure what else to call what they do besides performance, but they can both be very funny and very thought provoking at the same time. The endings of Bo Burnham's two latest comedy shows, "what." and "Make Happy" really show this too. And for what it's worth, "Make Happy" just came out on Netflix a couple of days ago. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend giving it a try when you have an hour to spend.

    • @TF-bi8ru
      @TF-bi8ru 8 лет назад +7

      Couldn't agree more James, what I found incredible about Make Happy's ending was how it used the comedy format to make his point even more poignant; evoking a slight sense of guilt for laughing for the past hour.

Its too bad that politicians and world leaders are really just puppets and cannot truly bring change to the problems we face, but if they could, a man like Tim would surely provide as good a step forward as ANY of the baffoons that hold those positions currently might EVER even stumble upon by mistake! Coming from a comedian's career I'm sure it could never happen, but can you imagine how great it would be........

    This is one of Tim's songs that perfectly explains why he shifted towards a more "serious" career in the last few years. His composing talent and overall musical ability were far more worthy of recognition than the comedy genre was capable of conceding him. Another great example (perhaps the best and most obvious one) is the song "Beauty"

    • @charliedeese6272
      @charliedeese6272 2 года назад +19

      That's true but part of this song's brilliance is it's also really funny and comedic in its macabre-ness- there's definitely when something special when Tim manages to do everything all at once. No coincidence that Matilda and especially Groundhog day are also quite comedic, if they were dead serious it wouldn't really be a good match for Tim I don't think

      "The successful removal of you would probably kill me too" was the first line in this song that caused me to tear up, and I kept crying throughout. Tim is such a well-rounded musician and composer, and often comedy and drama lift each other up so that they both shine brighter.

      It's been two years since your comment, but I saw Tim live this summer and reading that really resonated with me. My husband of 17 years who I still love dearly just left me out of the blue without ever having told me he was unhappy with any aspect of our lives... whether I can get through this song without crying is my measure of whether I'm having an off day or a good day.

    this is actually beautiful with an underlining of comedy, this is why Tim Minchin isn't simply a comedian or musician, he is both! He unifies the two so easily, to make a memorable extraordinary experience. This is evident by the reaction of the audience, who suddenly see that the song is actually quite beautiful and not simple wit, what a talent.

    Not to be redundant but this song is the most perfect encapsulation of what I love about Tim. It's in a minor chord so that instantly creates certain feelings and correlations in one's mind; but the lyrics are absurd and funny so this is a completely different set of emotions with which one has to deal. It's this juxtaposition that makes Tim's music so enticing and it's why I always return to it.
    I'll be seeing Tim in two days. I couldn't be more thrilled. His music means a lot to me.

I showed her this video, and by the end she was in tears and said 'That was one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard!'. I think this is proof of what a genius Tim Minchin is!
