  • Over the past few decades, unique youth subcultures have emerged globally: chavs in the UK, gyaru and harajuku in Japan, and K-pop in South Korea.
In China, the notorious 'shamate' subculture faded out in the early 2010s, leaving space for a new eclectic aesthetic to develop.
Known as 'yabi' this aesthetic emerged in recent years in China's underground music scenes, and has gained popularity on social media platforms like Xiaohongshu and Douyin, often attracting criticism.
But what led to the emergence of Yabi, and why is this subculture so controversial?

Gabbers in the Netherlands was really big in 90s but all died down early 2000s, still the music but it's now hard style and the clothing changed. Also nobody shaves their hair anymore 😀😀

Yabi is a boring watered down version of Shamate. Very fitting they're comparable to hipsters because at least emo, chav and scene grabbed people's attention, good or bad

@@victoriakexing8784 Another youtuber (JimmyTheGiant) who makes videos of different subcultures made a video of British football hooligans. If British football hooligans qualify as a subculture then maybe those Russian hooligans/gobniks qualify as well.

K-pop is an entertainment business. They are wearing designer labels that can cost you a month of salary. They are high profile people. Sharmate barely have money to eat.

Ironic that America's subcultures didn't make the list when most subcultures can be attributed to Germany (techno) England (punk) or the US (pop clubs, rockabilly, rednecks, hippies, and goth). They're all based on these. That vynil look came from the disco Era. Grunge is just punk with a hippies fashion sense. Emo is techno fascia with rock music. Name any subculture it can be tied back to these 5 subcultures.
