I was a geophysicist and environmental scientist for years and worked on some highway projects in my city. One of the more famous events that completely stalled a highway upgrade project was the discovery of an endangered cave spider was found on the planned highway site. It stalled the project for years after they essentially had to wait for the spider to move out from the site.
That spider was found during a geologic assessment of the site. It's so great to see that you've highlighted the need for environmental studies and works!

I constantly have this issue in my line of work, many municipal renovation and real estate projects are stalled because they find bats or other endangered species. It is standard to do a quicktest and further ecological research if needed in the early development stages. If they do find bats, we have to erect alternative housing for them. I know some projects are stalled for years, because the bats refuse to leave :)

This is Phil's secret Achilles heel really, it is not the first time that one of his highway off ramps has a very short distance to the next stopping point and not nearly enough lanes to let those coming off the highway spread out into multiple lanes to make it through the signalized intersection into town. He will eventually fix it at least somewhat in an Episode or two when the need for two lanes on the exit ramp and an asymmetrical road to the next intersection bite him the rear end. 🐊🐊🐊 (Especially as he uses the lanes leading the other direction from the interchange at some point.)

First of all great episode and this project was very wel needed. Also I think you definitely chose the right route.Additionally the last interchange you constructed is perfect.
    1. The first system interchange has unnecessary weaving and more bridging than necessary. You should remove the loop connecting the main highway through the map to your new spur: Instead make it a trumpet interchange by connecting directly around the other loop into the main highway. Also shift the whole interchange a bit to the north and then the impacts to the rail are significantly reduceds and you should be able to get rid of the tall bridge.
    2. The collector that connects to the service interchange needs more capacity especially some turning lanes onto the existing arterial.
    3. The service interchange needs acceleration lanes over the Bridges coming off the loops. It doesn’t meet interstate standards and would be very dangerous.

    • @navn_ukjent
      @navn_ukjent Год назад +6

I agree, and I also generally dislike that type of interchanges, as the off ramp is after the on ramp, meaning that there will be conflict between the cars that want to go onto the other HW and the ones that are coming from the other HW.

For his time, Robert Moses was a pretty good engineer/planner. However, he lacked the knowledge to realize how much the population on Long Island would grow so basically most of his roads are absolute junk now. And we can leave out his PERSONAL thoughts of why he built highways the way he did. Adding an Edit: Find out why he built the bridges over the southern state parkway on long island so low clearance which connected NYC with Jones Beach and beyond.

Although the destruction of the DDI was necessary I feel like it will harm Shorewood since it now only has one lower capacity service interchange to feed all the industry. I think that by adding a new service interchange by the rest stop you can give Belmont access to the highway as well as give the truckers a way to deliver goods to Shorewood with the county highway. Keep in mind, I live in Canada so this might not be true for the US but if the train has to cross the highway(freeway)it is often done across the highway(freeway) not at an interchange where you can get back-ups this seems like a safety hazard. Never mind the noise a train makes, which would distract drivers.

They don't even have access to the new spur that was put in without going most of the way to Van Buren. You could potentially clean up that issue, by adding a connection between the old bridge over the highway where the DDI used to be, and the highway that connects to the nearby interchange that was too close. That should allow highway access similar to what it had before, but cleaner, with less conflict points.

You have just under 2% on one side of your middle, just over 3% on the other, but because they are meeting a middle point (rather than a level middle segment) you have a single point with a 5% grade change. Since that grade change occurs at a single node I think there is serious danger of trains jumping their tracks, especially if they don't know the exact grade change or how their current load weights will impact on it.

Possibly for some bigger mansion-like homes with some gorgeous mountain views. Keep up the great work Phil!!!

I love making intersection markings for highways, since they do take awhile, why don’t you make some on/off ramp templates? As long as they fit the lane math, it makes the process a little quicker.

That service interchange to Shorewood should not have been removed. Maybe the OTHER connection could have been moved... but Shorewood *needs* access! They have an entire street off the highway dedicated to servicing travelers. They have hotels, diners, gas stations, everything people on long road trips need! Cutting that service interchange is not only detrimental to Shorewood and could kill the town, but is also detrimental to truckers and vacationers throughout the entire state!

One thing I noticed while watching is that the bikepath near the railway and new freeway has very few intersections. Less than the nearby arterial had, even though cycling is considerably slower. I think at the moment the bikeway as it is would mainly attract daytrippers and people looking for an exercise with a good view. With more intersections/off-ramps to the suburban residential areas and the commercial developments at the edge of town it could possibly become useful for more kinds of trips, like commuting to other parts of CC, or grocery shopping.

🍿 I'm just here watching :) Although I do have one concern about the project. I feel the line of larger trees in the center divider would be most likely either brush filled grass or would have concrete barricade walls to prevent a dead stop if a vehicle were to go off for any reason. I have a class A CDL and when I did my training and testing they explained why it's better to hit a barricade along the side that allows a vehicle to decelerate instead of a dead stop into a hard unforgiving surface such as a tree. It's a way to decrease fatalities. Other than that, it was another great episode, Phil. Looking forward to more :)

We in my hometown have a highway that has a traffic light intersection with another road.
Now it has such severe congestion during peak times, and it would be good if it was grade separated, most of the rest of the highway has been grade separated already.
Now the Governments response is that this does not need to be done because the amount of serious or fatal accidents is too low.
The cities response is that the serious accidents are so low because the road is so congested that traffic is moving too slow for serious accidents.

I'm glad you didn't go through shorewood!
A similar issue is happening in an area where my partner grew up, but to a much smaller extent of making a roundabout bigger and the surrounding roads wider. The plans were approved in the 70s and they have been attempting to compulsory purchase (eminent domain) the 10 or so houses that are in the way since the early 90s. As we drove through last month at about 5mph because of the severely over-congested roundabout, around 75% of the houses have finally been boarded up ready for demolition. The remainers all have banners and placards protesting the work. I'd say it'll be another decade before they will be commencing work, if they're lucky.
I can only imagine how much worse it would be for putting a highway through a busy and thriving neighbourhood.

Instead of merging the Interstate with Mulligan Ave, I would turn Mulligan Ave into the interstate where the bike bridge is, and just remove Mulligan Ave from where the interstate crosses the rail until the 3 story apartmens. It seems superflouus to have both the interstate and Mulligan Ave from van Buren to the service interchange. It would make accessability to the big box store worse - ideally, the service interchange would be placed a bit closer to that one, but I don't think that's a huge issue. I'd also extend the residential area in that place, and if there's commuter rail service, I'd add a station (otherwise, I'd leave space for a future station in case commuter rail is ever added).

  • @grahamturner2640

A tunnel under the university would make sense if you picked alternatives 3 and 4 and connected the two, to provide better access to downtown. However, one of the things that must be considered with tunnels is that in the real world, there would need to be an alternate direct route for trucks carrying hazardous materials, as if one of those trucks has a catastrophic failure, it could take down an entire tunnel. In downtown Phoenix, I-10 has a half-mile tunnel from 3rd Avenue to 3rd Street, and I-17 is the designated truck route for I-10 traffic near downtown, even though the tunnel meets other interstate standards, such as 16 foot clearances. Some bridges near system interchanges also have those requirements (e.g. State Route 202 at the interchange with State Route 101 in Tempe, as the 202 has a long bridge over the Salt River, which forces all eastbound trucks with hazardous materials to exit at McClintock Drive, a mile west of the 101).

I think you want both the pink and green routes, maybe modified slightly. But build one, like the pink, but reserve land for the green for future expansion.
Also reserve the ability to connect the pink to the green. Maybe through a tunnel.

    Hi ...
really a great and interesting build.
43:08 Seeing this intersection, the issue of dedicated lanes pops up. The first thing I see: there are three four-lane roads and the road backing up is the only asymmetric three-lane with just one lane going into the four-way intersection that came with the service interchange from the workshop. Upgrading to a four-lane, maybe even a 3+2 asymmetric could help. The other thing is a TMPE-issue ... the algorithm to setup timed traffic lights has been a little bit off for some TMPE-versions: none of your left-turns are dedicated, you even have a dedicated right-turn which might be a nice feature if you choose to have 3+2 asymmetry, but with regular four-lane roads and only two lanes going into the junction it is usually the wrong option. The rare exception are cases in which the right turn is extremely busy and tends to back up because you are approaching a cargo terminal or a similarly busy building.
The DDI removal has some serious consequences and I really had to skip back through the video to get more impressions of the area and the neighbouring highway trumpet ... 6:44 if the highway trumpet was not a three-way interchange it could provide some of the connections you lost through the DDI removal. And the blue Robert-Moses-scenario would have seen the system interchange as a four-way ... what if that scenario was an early favorite with a four-way interchange already built or prepared. With the blue plan later being dropped the existing infrastructure could have been repurposed as a service interchange on the fourth side of the system interchange. It would violate the principle of separating service and system interchanges ... however my region (Ruhr district in Germany) is full of pre-built infrastructure for follow-up projects that never came or were realized with significant changes.
9:50 The choice of this workshop asset is a little bit odd but could be explained as a preparation for a future four-way cloverleaf interchange in a similar way as this design is coming with all the weaving issues of a cloverleaf interchange and forcing you to 10:01 adjust the height of the train line. As you are bending the interstate and highway with Network Multitool's arrange-at-line mode anyway a trumpet would have definetly been an option.
