Have some empathy for your papa. Sounds like he was sharing a vulnerable moment with you. And maybe say hey let’s take some meditation classes together. Or buy him the mindfulness book, on how to be mindful and use mindful meditation. My father taught me how to meditate. He was a scientist so he had an intellectual quiet side. As well as could be outgoing. Maybe he needs to do some ayahuasca, maybe he can connect with you doing that. I can’t do it, cause I hate throwing up and am too sick, but I heard it can help chronic pain. Like I said with no vocal cord I can’t throw up because my throat is also having spasms. So no thanks. I hate throwing up.

My father thinks doing things all the time is a person full of life. But i find that this philosophy is flawed. Your inner life and developing it through thought and analysis and actively thinking about things will improve yourself. People dont want to think anymore, its too scary to face your own problems in life. Escapeism is COPE and cope is not actually good.
Its the old conundrum of Happy verses Meaningful. Something I personally struggle with because I know I 'feel' the difference when I overly indulge in merely pursuits that give me immediate 'pleasure'. I've said to my therapists that I 'could' just keep filling my days with say playing Games but at that point I may as well be addicted to Drugs! I 'feel' the difference and emptiness when my life is devoid of Meaning!
Yes all things we find pleasurable can become an 'addiction'. I think the definition itself refers to something that is done ti such an excess that it interfere with what we would otherwise normally do, even 'need' to do!
A very therapeutic video, thanks. But what is the 'end state of awareness' that you briefly mentioned? Can a person truly be free of escapism? Will that freedom constitute a successful life or just a life well lived?
Buddhists call it enlightenment. It's a cessation of all suffering and desire. A successful life / a life well-lived are just concepts, fairly meaningless and vague ideas that we each define differently.
Isaac, would you consider riding a bike often? Road bikes are cool and efficient, you'll be surprised how easy it becomes to ride miles without real effort.
