Wow, that's all I have to say....just wow. What a great set of semis and finals we had this year. Not only that but it was all the new generation, none of the older generation made it to the semis (although I think Kruse got ripped off a bit by the ref in top 8 bout with Saito). There were a lot of big surprises too in the earlier rounds:
-Sholto Douglas from my home country Australia making the Top 32 (eliminated by Gerek).
-Le Pechoux losing 15-1 to Matsuyama
-Race Imboden's stellar performance until the top 8 but especially in the 64 where he clinically dominatecd Jeremy Cadot 15-3.
-Alex Massialas defeated by Zherbchenko (but there was a bit of controversy there from what I saw).
So many shocking moments but overall there was some great fencing at this event. Now we are seeing the younger generation of foilists take to the top, it's no longer being dominated by the older fencers anymore.
The first semi-final was great, admittingly my friends and I were going for Race Imboden to make the semis only to see him lose to Garozzo barely broke our hearts so were kinda clamouring for some revenge and that we got when Saito defeated the Italian. The second semi-final with Zherbchchenko and Shikine was what I would call "Drunken Masters." It was such a wierd semi only because Shikine loves to hide his foil and decieve his opponents with his movements (beneath what looks like such a lazy style is some fantastic point control and footwork). It was very amusing but we got a great match overall.
Then we had a really great final after that. I had hoped Saito would win but I am very, very happy with Zherbchenko as he gave us all some really great fencing. He was not the one I expected to win from Russia (was hoping it would be Safin) but nonetheless it was good. What a great year for foil it has been.

Watching Race Imboden lose his quarterfinal was heartbreaking, but what a stellar performance from Zherebchenko! He's been posting good results all season, but I surely didn't expect him to be the 2017 men's foil world champion!

Race's match with Garozzo was so intense! Very good fencing for sure. There were a lot of comebacks at this year's WCHs. Zherebchenko brilliantly changed his fencing throughout his bouts to stay ahead of his opponents.

Zherbchenko was the big surprise at these WCHs although all of the guys who made the semis were fairly surprising (save for perhaps Garozzo). It further cements the fact that the old generation of foilists are not necessarily on the way out but it is a sign that the new generation is here and now. That's why I felt like it was a great final this year.
And yes on the subject of Race, he was literally on fire for most of the competition until his bout with Sanita, even then he came through barely and looked to having a shot at the gold this year, sadly for him though it didn't happen after being eliminated by Garozzo. To be fair though there was a lot of disappointment for many of the top contenders too (Safin got Red-carded against Saito, Kruse looked like he also got screwed over by the ref, Race obviously losing by 1 hit to Garozzo and even Shikine taking out Foconi was very shocking to some extent).
