I'm so surprised no one said James Hunt for coolest driver. I mean like Chris said they're inevitably flawed and fail lots. He was cool as hell, rules didn't apply to him.
Seriously guys, this is such a good podcast with the 5 of you. Highly entertaining. First podcast I have ever listened to twice, and the first time I have sought out the visual podcast here on RUclips! Bravo! Keep up the great work. Love it.
Favourite advert because it left me jaw dropped and stunned. RS6. Cowboy and the bull. The droning bass noise as the image of the bull settling down as the RS6 drives at the camera. Stunning.
One of my favourite car ads was actually a still photo, used in magazines and billboards: “Cavaliers, watch out for roundheads”. The car was a Cavalier SRi, the roundhead in question was a motorcycle copper pulled up beside the car. So simple, so clever. And it made me want an SRi more than ever!
I am 50 something petrol head who drives a 911 , please never stop these pods they just keep getting better and better ❤next week best 6 cylinder engine sound ?
For me, the coolest racing driver is Fernando Alonso. His total determination and dedication to the sport is incredible, and every time he talks, it's obvious that he knows how good he is, and is very willing to make sure everyone knows. He's not trying to be a gentleman, he's not trying to be polite, he doesn't care what anyone thinks (especially his bosses). He just wants to race and be faster than everyone.
Alonso is the dirtiest racing driver ever to Don a helmet. Crashgate yes he knew all about it, Spygate trying to bribe Ron Dennis, tearing multiple teams apart with his toxic personality. How has all this been forgotten?
Amazing chat. The cool racing driver part made me check my memory and find this.... And who was the first person to express congratulations? Tom Kristensen: “That was Jacky Ickx. He left a voice mail message for me at 3.53 p.m., in other words, a few laps before the finish, saying: ‘I know that you’re sitting in the car, because I’m watching you on television right now.’ Then he congratulated me and, with a smile, said that at least he was now the only racer again with six Le Mans victories to his credit. Jacky Ickx is a great individual and ambassador of motor racing. He will always remain the true ‘Mr Le Mans’.”
Fabulous chat gentlemen. Favourite steering wheel would be the removable Momo from a Caterham 7. I spent a few minutes looking at a Merc GLC this morning. Sorry Chris it is an affront to the eyes.
Being older than most of you I guess (in Bond years, mine was Sean Connery), I listen to Radio 4. About half way through last night's Now Show they did a piece about several sports and how they are changing these days, F1 was mentioned. Loving this podcast, it's opening up a whole new world to me! Thanks guys.
Seriously great stuff guys. Just honest banter between 5 blokes chatting about cars, what's there not to like. I've also had a thought, with the recent news about Freddie and the general public wanting something entertaining and honest to watch on the telly to do with cars, you 5 should do something. I know you all have busy lives doing your own thing but honestly seeing the 5 of you on TV larking about with cars and the chemistry that you all have would be mega. Start off small, F1 talk, used cars, Chris sliding about in something crap or exotic and just see where the show goes from there
There should have been a mention of Stirling Moss and Fangio for lots of reasons, but Moss' 55 Silverstone home win story should be enough by itself. First ever win for Moss and on home soil and his mentor, team mate and rival Fangio staying close second throughout the race and never even trying to take the lead. Moss asked him for numerous years after that if he had let him win and Fangio claimed until the end of his life "No. You were just better than me that day.". What a time, what a gentlemen those two were.
Car advert perspective from a different generation - there are 2 I specifically remember. Firstly the 206 advert where the Hindustan Ambassador is "turned" into one, and secondly the Megane "I see you baby"!
The thing that gets me every time is what awesome memmories you lot must have to be able to entertain us week after week with your extraordinary experiences or is it just that you are harnessing the magic of the internet. Any which way, don't stop these podcasts. 👍
Another epic performance by the “five that drive”. On the adverts there were a few other VW classics that I thought would get a mention including the “This is the man who put a million on black…” and the one with the squeak that turns out to be the passenger’s earring. On Cool racing drivers - surely James Hunt should get an honourable mention?
The best steering wheel is one that frames a Porsche dashboard. On my 996, every gauge is clearly visible, and most importantly, when the car is healthy all the needles in the gauges sit pretty much in the middle of their range, so any problem will be easily detected.
Love it! But you’re all wrong it’s the BMW ‘The Hire’ series of short film/ads they were awesome! And the coolest racing driver was Graham Hill. Keep up the great work!
Great chat boys. Coolest driver has to be Hunt the Shunt. Favourite car Ad was the online only VW Diesel “B*llocks” … hilarious! Driving music suggestion for this week… Nothing Else Matters by Metallica. Have a great Easter all.
New challenge for the show ending, Three's Company. You have to pick a garage of three cars, all from differing companies, with the theme altering from week to week. For example, Italian only, FWD only, 80s only etc etc
Subscribed a while ago coz of this pod cast, but now I find myself looking forward to a long drive just to get my weekly fix... Glad we are on same wave length kidding ourselves we are notnold and 1993 was 10 years ago.. Keep thus going it's not disappointed so far.. Thanks for your efforts..😎
Best steering wheel (Factory fit), Ferrari Dino/Daytona wheel. Far prettier than a F40 wheel or 250 GT/L woodrim wheel. OR, aftermarket wheel Springalex deep dish Escort Mk 1/2 Group 4 steering wheel - still love those wheels from my Ford RS 1800 days. Neil, you are right - any wheel with even one button on it is immediately disqualified.
The best car advert wasn't for a car. It was the Braun shaver advert back in the 80s with the black Porsche 911. I wasn't old enough to need a shaver but I knew I wanted a 911.
I can’t help but feel the late, great, Alain De Cadenet was missed from the coolest driver list. A type we will likely never see again. A hero of mine.
I think Chris Harris missed something here. I'm pretty sure that Walter Röhrl is on his rally cool-list which he couldn't use, but Walter drove races as well. And there are pretty cool stories like driving home to Bavaria directly after the 1981 Le Mans class win because he couldn't be bothered about celebrating.
@@JohnFromAccounting Still has actually. Wouldn't lable the Germans as uncool though. I was also thinking of Harald Grohs, who was a very decent long-distance racer, a force in the Porsche Cup and ran a, ehm, 'gentleman's club' on the side. The cool thing is: tried to do that in a decent mannor and doesn't care what others think.
Now looking at Quattroporte 5’s again! Maybe the gearbox does put me off. The MK1 Quattroporte by Frua is a brilliant, underrated design for me, so cool!
Love this podcast, the content is brilliant, I could listen to you lot drivel for hours. But please, please do something about the audio and invest in some decent microphones for everyone, I can hardly hear some of the content when I'm in the car.
Great podcast, love the F1 theme otherwise SIR Lewis Hamilton is 8 time champion 🏆🏆. Question for 2 car garage: Year 2023 , Man in his late twenties looking for everyday sporty car, hatch, wagon,... and motorcycle for the weekends budget 30 K. Thanks and greetings from Slovenia
Sorry for the off topic, I normally listen on apple but wanted to find a way to ask you guys a question. Going back to Bonds and Bond cars, am I really the only one alive who thinks The Living Daylights was the best movie and the V8 Volante was one of the best Bond cars? It was so ahead of it's time, their attempt at a serious spy movie before picking it back up with Craig. But in this context, I want to know more about that Aston! I think it's the best looking one, like a tastefully British 69 Mustang and I never see anyone talk about it or review it.
At some point in time, down the line, you’re each going to have to have your ‘favourite’ cars drawn / rendered, incorporating your favourite parts. We might have to have ‘favourite grille’ next please
I think technology hasn’t helped the drivers or the sport of F1, but at the same time it is reflecting the world we live in. Roads cars these days are ridiculously fast anyone can jump in a car and do 3seconds 0-60.
Fav F1 driver, there is a rumour that there was a F1 driver that claims to have shagged a different woman on every corner of Monaco, that has to be F1 level cool. But what about Berger? He was Senna's teammate and when he was in a chopper with him he famously chucked Senna's briefcase out of the chopper. While at Ferrari at the launch of the F355 he drove it so hard that the centre caps blew out of the wheels when he stopped and he didn't really need to be a F1 driver, he has a shed load of money so could've done the playboy life with out risking his own life.
Drive 2 Survive is awesome - how they tell such a different version of the race. New Netflix series Swing does exactly the same for golf - however Red Bull are still cheats and they must have a rocket motor underneath that diffuser !!!
Speak to anyone seriously involved in the sport and they'll concede that F1 race management and adjudication has never been the same after the passing of Charlie Whiting.
Ironic that Chris has a go at u.s racing for the show when the same day the Indy race has a crash 2 laps from the end and finishes under yellow! Impeccable racing for the win right up to then too.
New Name Suggestion: Autoholics Anonymous (AA) - this is basically an automotive group therapy session of 50-something males - and that's why I love ! It's like an evening down the pub with your petrol head mates!
Coolest driver? That's such a hard one. I thought it was pretty cool when Sterling Moss had birthday cake after the 55 Dundrod TT. In that same race three drivers were killed I believe. Does that make him cool? Nope but he must have had ice in his veins or perhaps didn't know yet although he must have driven past the burnt out wreckages. I don't know but can you imagine nowadays. Post world war II there was definitely a different attitude to mortality. There were many cool racing drivers. The marquee de portago, Wolfgang von Tripps and Collins come to mind. Jackie ikcx, definitely. Personally I think Duncan Pittaway is cool as hell, though I'm sure he would deny it😎. Keep up the amazing podcasts!
I was at Singapore 08 as a fan, and I remember clearly at the time feeling that the race was a fix! Either the whole race result should be void. Or at a minimum Alonso / Renault should loose the win and points…
Please never stop these!
I agree
I'm so surprised no one said James Hunt for coolest driver. I mean like Chris said they're inevitably flawed and fail lots. He was cool as hell, rules didn't apply to him.
James Hunt is type of dude you would want to be but not the type you would want to be around.
My favourite podcast, keep up the great work guys!
Seriously guys, this is such a good podcast with the 5 of you. Highly entertaining. First podcast I have ever listened to twice, and the first time I have sought out the visual podcast here on RUclips! Bravo! Keep up the great work. Love it.
Love the chat...agree with Neil with 'Who knows where the time goes' ... An absolutely superb tune.
Favourite advert because it left me jaw dropped and stunned. RS6. Cowboy and the bull. The droning bass noise as the image of the bull settling down as the RS6 drives at the camera. Stunning.

Harris is the David Attenborough of the automotive world!
I think that of Manish
Chris ‘’my boys” Cooper. Great work guys.

James Hunt is the name that springs to mind. Kimi is ice cool as well.
my 2 picks + Lauda

Glad to hear The Race been mentioned. Great track to listen to
The most enjoyable car channel on RUclips
Best episode so far!! Thanks a lot! Made my day.
Best Car Advert, Ford Puma with Steve McQueen, Super cool!!
These are brilliant, please keep going. Plus coolest racing drive = Sabine Schmitt,
The best steering wheel is one that frames a Porsche dashboard. On my 996, every gauge is clearly visible, and most importantly, when the car is healthy all the needles in the gauges sit pretty much in the middle of their range, so any problem will be easily detected.

I love how Chris always says "we'll play that now" and I still sit there thinking it will happen 😂😂😂
I'm still waiting...and for the pictures of the random rare things they're talking about that never show up on screen. 😅
Great chat boys. Coolest driver has to be Hunt the Shunt. Favourite car Ad was the online only VW Diesel “B*llocks” … hilarious! Driving music suggestion for this week… Nothing Else Matters by Metallica. Have a great Easter all.
The first Audi ad using Vorsprung durch technik coined a slogan we never forgot.
I utterly love this series ❤
New challenge for the show ending, Three's Company. You have to pick a garage of three cars, all from differing companies, with the theme altering from week to week. For example, Italian only, FWD only, 80s only etc etc

Adverts: Honda’s Impossible Dream advert. Brilliant.
I absolutely love listening to you guys talking about motoring shit, absolutely love it😂
Outstanding guys, Thankyou 🤗
Motoring gold as always, much love you guys
Best steering wheel (Factory fit), Ferrari Dino/Daytona wheel. Far prettier than a F40 wheel or 250 GT/L woodrim wheel.
OR, aftermarket wheel Springalex deep dish Escort Mk 1/2 Group 4 steering wheel - still love those wheels from my Ford RS 1800 days.
Neil, you are right - any wheel with even one button on it is immediately disqualified.
The best steering wheels for me are the 1980’s BBS (itslvolante manufactured) 3 spoke and the modern Momo Indy 350mm wooden one 👌🏻
Vic & Bob did the best 'nicole & papa' advert 😂
Amazing podcast chaps. Please keep them going. 👍
The best car advert wasn't for a car. It was the Braun shaver advert back in the 80s with the black Porsche 911. I wasn't old enough to need a shaver but I knew I wanted a 911.
ChatGPT told me to buy a 1967-72 Chevrolet pickup and a early 911. It has great taste 😅
Monsieur Ickx, Le Mans 1969. WALKING to his car. Deffo the coolest.
I can’t help but feel the late, great, Alain De Cadenet was missed from the coolest driver list. A type we will likely never see again. A hero of mine.
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is a beautiful song. Rest in peace Ryuichi Sakamoto. Art is long, life is short.
I shared a flight with Jacky Ickx from Brussels to Nice last summer. Such a gentleman.
You forgot the e39 M5 camera car advert
Favourite ad. Vauxhall senator 24v, black Swan and Enya soundtrack. Or the bmw m5 superstar ad with Madonna. Coolest driver had to be james hunt.
Great podcast, with a lot of entertaining information.
Such a awesome podcast this. 👏
Another epic edition 👍
So niche, so arcane, so good - thanks gents.
Great podcast. But could you raise the volume ~ 10 % in the edit?
30%
I think Chris Harris missed something here. I'm pretty sure that Walter Röhrl is on his rally cool-list which he couldn't use, but Walter drove races as well. And there are pretty cool stories like driving home to Bavaria directly after the 1981 Le Mans class win because he couldn't be bothered about celebrating.
Walter was easily the coolest German driver. In a nation of uncool people, he had a good energy to him.
@@JohnFromAccounting Still has actually. Wouldn't lable the Germans as uncool though. Fairport Conventions Who Knows Where The Time Goes is to be my main music when I'm promoted ( in about 300 weeks).
Manish is fast becoming my favourite human being!
What a great 🌵 in Neil's games room 👍
Best piece of entertainment anywhere.
Chris calling TVR obsession a scrotal rash is throwing me off my chair 🤣🤣🤣
Second Best Car Ad - Honda - Impossible Dream - ruclips.net/video/NrQoof1F2cQ/видео.html
Now looking at Quattroporte 5’s again! Maybe the gearbox does put me off. The MK1 Quattroporte by Frua is a brilliant, underrated design for me, so cool!
Sorry, but I cant let the Aussie's steal our stuff, again! The Toyota Hilux Bugger ad is New Zealand thru and thru.
Love this podcast, the content is brilliant, I could listen to you lot drivel for hours. But please, please do something about the audio and invest in some decent microphones for everyone, I can hardly hear some of the content when I'm in the car.
the nsx type r steering wheel oh myyyy gooood
Gents. The Peugeot 206 ad set in India. Hard to beat.
A GLC63 😮 I didn’t see that coming!
Sorry for the off topic, I normally listen on apple but wanted to find a way to ask you guys a question. best car talks
audio is a bit quiet lads, laptop is at full volume but i'm having to put my head right next to speakers.
surely the nissan almera ads that paid homage to the sweeny and the professionals need a mention. very very funny
Brilliant, keep up the banter.
At some point in time, down the line, you’re each going to have to have your ‘favourite’ cars drawn / rendered, incorporating your favourite parts. We might have to have ‘favourite grille’ next please
The Clio ad where Nicole dumped Vic Reeves at the altar and ran off with Bob. I spat my tea out first time I saw it, didn't see that coming. Genius.
Please do “favorite gage cluster”
Chris I love these podcast videos. But please turn up the sound level.
There's times where I turn the sound all the way up & can barely hear it.
I think technology hasn’t helped the drivers or the sport of F1, but at the same time it is reflecting the world we live in. Roads cars these days are ridiculously fast anyone can jump in a car and do 3seconds 0-60.
Supercar conversation, econobox audio. Surely there's a way to make this sound better (?).
I was thinking of kimi, the coolest modern day driver
Look up the Audi R8 V10 plus ad. No talking just the noise.
Just brilliant fun.😂
Neil is so right, it’s all about the engine in these dark times for petrolheads!
David Purley was very cool in my book
Peter Brock for coolest driver!
Carlos was robbed ! Coolest driver : Ronnie Peterson , best song : Midnight oil ,beds are burning !

ALL sports are just entertainment.
F1 is just as much an entertainment business as football or golf etc. Bernie understood this from day one.
Ironic that Chris has a go at u.s racing for the show when the same day the Indy race has a crash 2 laps from the end and finishes under yellow! Impeccable racing for the win right up to then too.
Dan Gurney. He could drive anything. He had the absolute respect of his competitors, but you never heard it from him.
@chrisharris - Rallying is Racing!
New Name Suggestion: Autoholics Anonymous (AA) - this is basically an automotive group therapy session of 50-something males - and that's why I love ! It's like an evening down the pub with your petrol head mates!
I agree with Ickx as the coolest driver, but Bell isnt far behind. Always had a cool barnet which stayed cool even when he took his helmet off.
Moto Lita did the Jag steering wheel i think
Good, funny PC as always. 👍
