  • Matt Smith was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1960. At an early age he moved to Arizona where he developed his life long connection to the Sonoran Desert and the great outdoors. This was a connection that would eventually influence his decision to paint the landscape. As a teenager he also lived two years in France and one year in Switzerland. While in Europe, he had the opportunity to visit many of the great museums which helped solidify his love for art.
In 1985, Smith earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from Arizona State University. Somewhat frustrated with the abstract focus of the program at ASU he began looking to outside sources for inspiration and guidance. These sources included fellow artists, fine galleries and museums. This is where his "real" education began.
These days, Matt can often be found painting en Plein air from southern Arizona to the Canadian Rockies, from the California coast to the Rocky Mountains. "I appreciate traditional landscape painting and I am inspired by the pristine landscapes of the American West. I enjoy working in areas where one can travel for miles without seeing the influence of man. When I paint, I feel I've hit the mark when I've captured a balance between mood, look and feel.
    Smith currently lives in Arizona.

Beautiful work by my favorite-est painter. I first met Matt Smith, along with other PAPA members, at a workshop held in Fallbrook Ca, near San Deigo in 1998. I was impressed not only by his wonderful professional work but also his humble manner and "approachability" which was true of all the others there I must admit such as Keven MacPherson, Jean Legassick, John Budacin and several others putting on the workshop. I learned a lot. I took another workshop with Matt, 12 years later, at the Tucson art academy, when moving to the Tucson area to paint the SW landscape, having come from the Lake Tahoe area in CA. It was about how to turn a field sketch into a finished studio painting. BTW, he has a fine DVD about painting southwestern scenes, en plein air, that no one attempting to do so should not have. I see in his work the kind of paintings I would like to achieve but have not, as yet; I'm still only 77 after all!! LOL. He can take a scene, such as a typical SW wash, many would pass by for the more "heroic scene", of majestic mountains (he does those too as noted here) and turn it into a great and wonderful painting, done as a plein air sketch that stands alone, or as reference, perhaps, for a larger studio work. I try to emulate that in my own work.
Thanks very much, Matt, for your artistic contribution to capturing the beauty of this wonderful planet we are all so very very privileged to be born onto. And for us to be inspired to have the very beginnings of an opportunity to also attempt to paint as well.

Thank you for your incredible comment Ron! As someone who also lives in AZ, Matt's work is a tremendous inspiration to my own work! I hope to take one of his workshops and purchase his instructional videos in the near future! Thanks again!

From what I have seen and read about Matt, he uses his small plein air studies as references for larger works. He also uses photographs. I doubt he uses postcards for references.
