This is a unicorn for sure! It's a 1980 (well late 79) Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup. They were only made for 3 years and sold around 125000 of them. The 1980 one's are the rarest as they just didn't hold up to salt as well as the later ones. I've owned this one for about 4 years now, but I've been driving these since I was 16. My last one, also an 80 model ran gret for 14 years before it rusted out. I used it for landscaping, deck building and general hard duty. They are tough!
I have been looking for a used one for a little while and they are really far and few anymore. Especially in good shape. I would love to find a diesel with a 5 speed. I had a 1970 rabit diesel with a 4 speed and I loved that thing. I used it for a few years then my dad used it for a few years and then I used it for several more years. I ended up selling it to a guy I worked with who had 8 or 9 of them. He would rebuild them or fix them up and drive them. Maybe someday one will show up at the right time and I will get my hands on one in pickup form.
They are great little trucks. I have owned 2 that were diesels and they were getting incredible fuel mileage! Like 50mpg even fully loaded. I dreamed of building a custom tiny camper for the back of one and traveling the country with it while sipping fuel. Maybe someday for me as well, but for now this gas model one is just what I need.
@Farpoint Farms It's getting hard to find the gas ones also. If I was younger I would get a gas one and convert it to diesel in time. I just can't do the stuff I use to do.
My uncle has an ‘81 diesel VW Caddy. It’s been his daily driver for well over 30 years. I’ve been begging him to sell it to me for the longest time. He told me he’s gonna drive it till he croaks then I can have it.
Sweet little truck I got an 8ft bed on my s10 it sure comes in handy where I'm from you never find a older truck as clean as yours

I see it as a place to mount 4 antennas. Or a place for a HF vertical for POTA! Looks really strong.
Oh boy, now you got me thinking!
