Sin had to be judged once and for all and it was on the cross. Isaiah 53: 5 "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” The cross was about God's holiness and justice as well as His love. Don't separate those two axioms. God is holy. Mankind had a sin problem and God's remedy was the cross. God is holy, God is love. Not God is love without God is holy. God's love is a holy love. The justice of God and His mercy meet in the atonement on the cross. The cross teaches us to what extent God will go to redeem us from sin. However, the wrath and Justice of God remain as real attributes of God along with the rest of His divine attributes. There is a judgement coming and God will finally cast the wicked into the Lake of Fire. Jesus reminds us that the way of holiness is narrow and few will be that find it Matthew 7: 13-14. Without holiness no one will see God Hebrews 12: 14. God hates sin, and it is likened to leprosy as a type. So, we do stink badly, until we are washed clean in the Blood of the Lamb. In fact, hell is a place where the rotten smell of the wicked will rise forever. That is the final home for the wicked and it will smell because the carcasses of sinners stink badly and in that place there will be no way to extinguish the smell of rotting sinners and sulfur. Don't minimize the awfulness of sin or the tremendous holiness of our Holy Father. "Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. His Name is to be Hollowed" because He is an awesome and thrice holy God. The cross is about the awfulness of mankind's sin, and the holiness and justice of God as well as His steadfast redeeming and conquering love.
