This selection kicks off with no fewer than four favorites (through the classic jazz versions) of mine. I think of Chet Baker and Russ Freeman (#3), Bird and Diz groovin' high (#2), Art Tatum (#1), Kenny Davern once handing me his clarinet when I asked him at a club gig to play _Dardanella_ as an encore (reed players will get it) and Django jammin' with the Americans (#4).
What a great year for the Great American Songbook. But there were still even more impressive ones to follow. What an era!

I like the Frank Crumit version of The love nest-Tom Hood in Vancouver once sent me a selection of his very early 1920,s recording not readily available on L.P. 30 years ago-did you know both Crumit and the late Rich Conaty used to drive their vintage cars down the Hudson roads to the recording studios-Crumit in the 20,s and 30,s a dear Rich nearly up to his sad passing in late December 2016.We miss his Big Broadcasts so much.

Nigel I have never had the opportunity to listen to one of Rich's shows but I know they are available online. Rich had a long career with his shows, this channel has only been around about 11 years now. Just curious but was Rich a smoker? I have a copy of the The Love Nest by Frank Crumit. Nigel thank you for watching the channel and leaving such great comments, much appreciated. My name is Bob btw.

Terrific acoustically recorded music! Singers & musicians performed into a horn with an attached needle that cut the master from which the records were produced. No microphone, no electronic assistance, hard work, plenty of retakes, but a lovely warm result. Have Both John Steel & Frank Crumit versions of "The Love Nest" and "I've Got My Captain Working for Me Now" (ah, sweet revenge!), and a favourite of mine, "After You Get What You Want" by Van & Schenck. Never get tired of this stuff. Thanks so much for this great series, for the superb transfers and the artwork. Bravo!

Thanks for focusing on the 1920's and not letting 1930's depression era music intrude like everyone else does. I've liked 1920's since I was born, and especially since "The Sting" and the Robert Redford version of Great Gatsby. I'm glad others are getting into it too.

Anyone notice how Al Jolson's vocals are easily understood, while John Steel's are almost incomprehensible due to the added 'acrobatics' and rolled 'r's'? To me, such stylings are often what makes a recording 'dated', not the year the record was pressed. In fact, Jolson would continue to perform until his death in 1950 (shortly after returning to the U.S. after performing for troops in Korea), whereas Steel's career foundered in the early '30s, forcing him to declare bankruptcy (he was later able to obtain work as a vocal instructor, presumably teaching a less-ornate style).
