Hours to Enter Grand Canyon National Park - Line 5 Miles Long, Go Early or Wait Forever

We visited Grand Canyon National Park on a Saturday in April. Our family motto is to go early! We arrived at 9am because we had to travel to the Grand Canyon from Sedona. When we arrived there was 3 or 4 cars ahead of us to get in. When we left around Noon the line was backed up to Tusayan, the nearest down that 4-5 miles down the road.
Listen people, there was no parking when WE got to the park at 9am. I can't imagine how many people arrived after we got there. Are these lines of cars even going to get entry? It looks almost impossible to even turn around in the line. What a nightmare!
If you decided to visit a popular place like this, forget sleeping in! Get up and get to the park. We would hate to be caught in this line.
