- Yeah, so I made this. Just some of my favorite cut moments from the show! I only have a DC audio and script, so I don’t have the visuals to go along with any of these moments. If you have any requests for moments to include, feel free to suggest them in the comments!

For those curious about where I found the D.C. audio, it was given to me by a kind individual on Instagram. The drive, though, does not belong to me. To respect the owner of the drive’s wishes, I won’t be passing it on, as that increases the chance of it being flagged. I apologize! On the bright side, I will be uploading clips here. If you want to hear anything in the next three parts, feel free to comment and I’ll do my best to include everything!

I feel like the DC version was made to an adult audience while the Bway one is directly to teenagers.
Camila C You’re right! They wanted to appeal to a wider audience on Broadway, so they had to cut a LOT of the crude humor, despite how hilarious it was.
True. Though I don't think I should relate to Lydia as much as I do....

I always compared it this way..
The dc version is a full on R rated version of the film, nasty, sexual, more pervy but also with some interesting moments and a bit deep (i do miss for example the miscarriage plot point)
While the broadwat version is a pg13 version of the beetlejuice cartoon
I've got to say that as much fun as these cut lines are (well most of them at least), I'm kind of glad a lot of them were cut.

Kelese24 Same! I’ve actually cried over the miscarriage arc before because,,, damn. It gets worse when paired with a certain cut song (The Children We Didn’t Have). I’ve actually been asked to make a video covering the miscarriage arc, so that’s probably happening soon!
In the original script of the movie version Barbara had a miscarriage but that was removed for a similar reason

I know the miscarriage arc was heavy but I wish they'd kept it in. I feel like it gives more depth to Adam and Barbara and really helps cement their relationship to Lydia.

The miscarriage literally made me cry my heart couldn't take sad Barbara :( Wish they involved the plants more tho that makes more sense to me
Me too :( It’s,, extremely tragic and I hate sad Maitlands. They deserve better. But yeah! I miss Barbara’s gardening, but I guess they felt the need to change it when they removed the miscarriage arc.

They said in an interview that a lot of these lines were cut for being too vulgar/depressing/violent. Which for some of these makes sense watching this.
A Lazy Snail Yup! They wanted to appeal to a wider audience, so they cut a lot of the crude humor & violence.

1:35, the reason why Beetlejuice’s suicide is so accepted is because it’s canon to the movie (and possibly the animated series) since in earlier concepts for the movie he’d hung himself, hence the iconic scratchy-af voice and possibly his cartoons counterparts red fingertips. However, with Musical! Beetlejuice’s whole ‘being a demon’ thing, the born dead thing makes a lot more sense, y’know? (Also, for the next parts, you should DEFINITELY include Beetlejuice and Lydia’s epic duet and the end of Say My Name, the cut lyrics from No Reason, Mama Would, and it’s reprise, Emily Would(which I personally feel they should’ve found some way to keep in the show)
You’re absolutely right! Although I didn’t know that it’s _canon_ that movie!Beetlejuice hung himself, it is widely believed and I’m also someone who buys it. However, in the animated series, it’s canon that he was born dead, and that may be where, in that aspect, the musical drew its inspiration from. It just bothers me sometimes when I see theories about Beetlejuice stopping Lydia’s suicide because he, himself, committed suicide- just because,, noo. Alex Brightman confirmed otherwise in a Playbill interview. I felt the need to leave that note in the video because it seems that few people know that Musical!BJ was born dead. Also, thank you for your suggestions!! I totally agree about keeping Mama Would and Emily Would in the show 🥺 They’re amazing.
He was born dead in the animated series, at least I assume. It shows him a lot as a baby so I think he was never alive.
His cartoon's red fingertips is actually a uh dirty joke
Freelance Bioexorcist I always thought that Beetlejuice drowned, at least in the cartoon. Because the cartoons make references to him smelling really bad, I always thought he was just afraid to take a bath because he drowned.

YES, there was! It’s the most heartbreaking thing! I’ll definitely consider making a video dedicated to that, as it’s probably one of my favorite cut things from the show. That could be my next video when I’m done with this series! Thank you so much for the suggestion!!

I think that’s why they couldn’t have a kid in the movie
the miscarriage is heavily implied in the film. before the Maitlands die their neighbor/community leader come over and there is a line about the house being too big for a couple with no family which leads to an awkward and somber moment between her and Barbara
There's a whole cut song (which I think is from this run) where Barbara sings about her miscarriage.
I’m pretty sure that’s what happened in the movie. They were trying to have a baby but probably miscarried. When Jane comes trying to convince them to sell the house she goes “this house should really be used by a family.” And then Barbara gets a sad look on her face and Jane says “ohh pumpkin I didn’t mean anything by it.”

Marganna Goad Yeah, I miss it!! The thing is, they needed to cut lots of things for time’s sake. Also, in the Broadway run, Charles and Lydia don’t hate each other as much, so it was a little bit aggressive for Lydia to wish death upon her father by saying, “I wish his perfect picket fences would impale him through the heart.” However, I love the analogy of her life being a carousel filled with phonies, so I definitely do miss that verse.
I think it was too high for Sophia to do every night bc that verse modulated the key up by one step so the chorus (“daddy doesn’t wanna feel”) would be up on a D5! That’s pretty high to do every night.
@Freelance Bioexorcist Super late, but I'm pretty sure the Carousel line is a reference to the book "Catcher in the Rye". The main character of the book is dealing with depression and grief, also he constantly complains about the "phonies" of the world. Towards the end of the book there's a Carousel that I think is supposed to be a metaphor for life.
That Barbra line hit close to home when my mom had a miscarriage that year we had a big garden.

califor m.i.a. It’s okay this was over 10 years ago and now I have a little sister who is 11. She’s a rainbow baby. This is when a child is born after a miscarriage.
This went from me just going "Oh gosh no" to "Why must you rip my heart out."
I don’t know how the fandom sees it but the suicide is movie only and it’s made clear in the musical he’s never been alive and is hell native.
Edit: It was cut from the movie but basically being a netherworld civil servant is the punishment for suicide. He hung himself but suffocated in failing to beak his neck which is a significantly worse way to go which explains the cocked voice, rotting and insects as your spirit seems to remain as you where at the moment of death and he had been dying a lot longer than most.
Making demons separate from ghosts works as it gives a reason he is significantly more powerful since in the movie other ghosts abilities are only shown to be tame and also means they don’t have to spend a lot of money and effort on things like Barbara and Adam face warping.
Exactly. The fandom tends to think that he committed suicide, despite the lack of evidence for that claim and the overwhelming evidence that he was born dead -- especially as it was confirmed by Alex Brightman himself that he was Netherworld native. The musical is very different from the movie, drawing inspiration from both the cartoon _and_ the movie. In the cartoon, he was born dead, which is likely where they got it from. Yet, somehow, it's a huge misconception in the fandom. You articulated it perfectly.
I heard it was alot different in D.C. wish I could've seen it.
Robin Sigari It was very different in D.C.! It was much more crude, there were entire characters that used to not exist or were VASTLY different, there were way more songs, etc. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see it, either :(

I did! I went to New York for the first time in January, luckily before all of this coronavirus stuff. Because I was only there for four nights, I made the most of my trip and saw it two nights back-to-back. Did you get to see it in NY?

I only just found out about Beetlejuice and I've been obsessed with the soundtrack ever since!!! It sucks I can't actually watch it bc I I'm not American but holy moly, it's so good! The miscarriage plot was unexpected... So in the Washington version, the Maitlands weren't just scared of being responsible for a baby but they LOST a child already?? Oh my god, that's so sad. Can you share some more info/clips about that? ...wait, Betelgeuse said he was born dead and he's a demon... Would that mean every child born dead becomes a demon, or just that demons happen to be born dead? 🤔 Lots to think about haha!
If it makes you feel any better I won’t ever be able to see it on broadway either as I only got into the fandom a few months ago, also it’s closing down on June 6 and broadway reopens on June 7 so they’ve had their last broadway performance for now 🙁
it doesn't mean that every miscarried/lost/aborted baby becomes a demon. It means that bj was born a demon in hell, by Juno the case worker, he was already considered among the undead.

This one's very subtle but they changed the way the house was revealed. In the DC version lightning is striking while Beetlejuice is talking about himself (interrupting him too) before one final strike reveals the home. In the Broadway run Beetlejuice points out the house before telling the audience that 'its a lot bigger on the inside!' and he reveals it himself. Subtle but neat.
There's also the "Living in a box" song that Otho and his followers sing that got cut that I wish was still in but time is a demanding mistress.
The “Living in a Box” song is definitely one of my favorite put parts of Act II! Like, genuinely. I laughed so hard the first time I heard the audio and Charles went, “JESUS CHRIST!” at all the cult members suddenly coming on stage singing it. Going to include a clip of it in Part 4.

I'm kinda surprised you left out "look at these melons!" (?) over "look at these jugs!" It explains the garden part of the cut verse around the miscarriage arc. Though I agree the "look at these jugs!" line lands a lot better arc or no arc. Excellent compilation, though! I loved the DC run and I'm happy to find a place where I can see the various differences.

Watching this two days after seeing the musical REALLY makes me wish they kept the miscarriage arc. It would’ve had me in tears. There’s so many things in this video and the other one that I wish they kept in the musical now. The reason why they cut these was most likely cuz they wanted to make the musical aimed towards teens more than adults probably. Making things less adult and edgy. But I can confirm that Alex still sneaks some 18+ lines in the show cuz it’s such an Alex thing to do and I love him for it. Literally made me laugh so hard especially when he mentioned Orgies 😂

They also shouldn’t of cut sky dying. It seemed fitting with the overall theme of death and it was odd how she doesn’t die after stressing that anything scary will kill her.

I was talking to someone on Instagram a few days ago who was able to see the DC version and they were telling me how DC Lydia was much more intense, though they didn’t really give many specifics. So I suppose my request for future parts is intense Lydia moments (including I think invisible had different lyrics?) Thank you for sharing these!
I can confirm that Lydia was much more intense! For the most part, that’s because there was much more tension between Charles and she. I’ll try to include more intense Lydia moments! Invisible (Prologue) actually had the same lyrics, but it was sung on a slightly lower key, and interestingly, it was in the middle of The Whole “Being Dead” Thing. Regardless, she was more intense, so I’ll try to find some moments of that. Thanks for your input!

I love a lot of the things they cut from this, but I am so happy that they changed the beat to Fright Of Their Lives. Having the same melody but with this mellow sound just does not cut it for me 😂

art1st1cly You’re right! While it’s supposed to be a hybrid between both adaptations, I’d say DC Betelgeuse definitely more resembled the movie while Broadway more resembles the cartoon Betelgeuse. Aaand, yeah, there was LOTS of crude humor in DC. They had to cut it because they needed it to appeal to a wilder audience lol
Wow the dc version was so much less funny... beej was more intensely evil and less easy to relate and sympathize to. He was also much more violent and the plot was way darker... hm. I’m glad they changed it.
Yeah I'm not getting the people here saying this stuff should have been kept, it makes pretty much all of the characters less likeable. I can see why this show got a lot of negative reviews when it came out.

That’s fair! The DC was absolutely hilarious, but they made it less crude for Broadway. Some people just prefer the crudeness of the humor, some of the old story arcs, and the songs that were cut!
It used to be darker and a lot of the characters, namely BJ and Adam, were a lot hornier. God I wish they'd kept some things!

I wonder, is the act one finale any different? Like does Beetlejuice say anything different? That’s always been one of my favorite scenes in the show!
I’ll leave a bit of the script here for you, since you seem interested!! Because my script is actually a workshop script, it’s very similar to DC but is different in some scenes. This is one of such scenes, so I transcribed my DC audio onto here. Pardon the few parts where I had trouble transcribing. The audio will be in Part 2!

Max Collins You’re welcome! Also, it is! I’m so sad they cut the whole thing with him wearing the big-top on his head and having his arms all rolled up. It _was_ like the movie! But, y’know, they had to make lots of cuts for time’s sake, unfortunately.
The reason why people are saying he killed himself is because in the original film his death cause was going to be he hung himself. But they decided not to include it in the movie because they wanted to keep it lighthearted.
Me: *learns that BJ is a Born dead prob abused severly by Juno hence his personality, Barbara had a miscarriage, Adam is too hurt to try again, Charles is just "putting up" with Lydia and that Lydia wants to kill her father-

I could've seen beetlejuice cause I live near dc but I watched the movie and didnt really like it so my mom just decided not to get the tickets, biggest mistake tbh 😔

I love the DC version of beetlejuice but I also love the actual beetlejuice but I do believe that Lydia in the DC version was a lot better but I still love both

Will do! DC FotL is actually very similar yet very different to Broadway’s sound-wise. The lyrics, for the most part, are the same, but the beat and some of the notes are such a change. I’m in the midst of editing Part 2 of this series right now, but I’ll try to upload FotL after I upload Part 2!

To anyone who knows, what was charles like? I know that he was much different and kind of unlikable in the dc version from what Eddie perfect said but are there any lines of his that were changed?
I really think they should have included the parts about the miscarriage. I think it would give a little more depth to Adam and Barbara's characters.
