Appreciate the effort the LD team puts into their ship and stations designs. Just as I appreciate you guys getting into the minutia to enhance that enjoyment. Looking for new reading material, may have to check out the Vanguard novels now.
I smiled when I saw the space station. You'd assume that by the time of "Lower Decks" the station would have been updated and undergone modifications from its original Vanguard design.
And for a split second there is another starfleet ship shown, not sure what it’s supposed to be but looks like a badly drawn Intrepid. That ship is also seen on the promotional posters I believe.
That Vulcan yacht/peacebird thing would look very VERY Romulan if you just painted it green. Everything from the cockpit window, to the wings, the multi-element hull thing with the waisted pylons... The only patently Vulcan part is the ring and tail section.
There is another Andorian cruiser st the lower right that looks to have a fin at the rear. Which begs the question if the Andorian Imperial Guard is still a thing as like in Archer's dossier in A Mirror Darkly. Or are these Starfleet ships themselves?
the station looks like the TOS station given a TMP refit, to me. the inclusion of the pre-TOS ships is odd, but presumably some could be civilians using old surplus.
still can't get over the fact that there are still those Daedalus Class ship from about 100 years ago still operating... XD and im pretty sure by canon they are much older then the Constitution class
Daedalus is essentially a pre Federation Design of the United Earth that got used in the Earth-Romulan war. So yeah pretty old. 2140ish to 2380ish. so 240 years therabout. 2250's a few got used by Starfleet Corps of Engineers. That'd be about a hundred years. Still that means they allready got used 150 years after they where originally introduced, so doing it again a hundred years later isn't totally weird, I'm sure almost no original parts would still be there, maybe just bit of the superstructure.
Well, we see it in such limited detail... Personally I prefer the idea that it's a more recently built ship, constructed with modern technology and capabilities, but just the same overall shape and proportion of the Daedalus. If I was in charge of a shipyard making low level, not-so-important ships, I would definitely try to get some retro designs like the Daedalus or TOS Constitution built.
@@adamlytle2615 This makes the most sense, I doubt an over 200 year old space frame would be that great now regardless of the refits. The Galaxy Class had 100 years life time and thats using materials that are over 180ish years newer than the old Daedalus.
Lower Decks, the most faithful show of the current run. Hopefully in addition to the upcoming refit Constitution class we get an original TOS Constitution to push back against the Disco redesign.
@@Wrell404 It has the shuttlebay on the saucer and the raised black arrowhead area travelling backwards from the bridge dome, so I'm pretty sure this is a refit Centaur class starship or some other variant.
Those Daedalus can't be commissions Starfleet ships anymore. Decommissioned for civilian use. It was more a civilian station, so to have updated but ancient ships rescued from the boneyard for civilian use docked works fine. Wish they did have some capital ships around but they all dropped their Captains plus 1 off and left. Hard press to say if a Centaur is a capital ship. If a California class is the bottom of starfleet, a Daedalus still active in the fleet is three layers below that.
Eh, if you just need a hull for low level research or transport of personel a Deadalus with new engines and warpcore would do just fine. Someone has to map asteroid fields.
Last Daedalus ships were retired in the 2190s IIRC. ... Then again, we have people today making fully running replicas of WW2 planes/tanks (modern components like engines and transmissions, historic looking exterior and interior as best possible) and people have built operational replicas of sail ships, etc. Maybe those are civilian built replicas of Daedalus-class ships? Want a yacht to travel around the Federation in? Why not make it a Daedalus-class replica! ;)
Two possibilities: 1. They're extensively-updated 225+/- year old former Starfleet ships now in civilian service, or 2. Because they traveled through time. Established Canon had the Daedalus class retired from Starfleet service in 2196.
Not 200 hundred years, but Keith Colburn's the Wizard on the Deadliest Catch is a 75 year old World War II Yard Oiler converted to a civilian crab fishing vessel. The Daedalus and Kumari class vessels could have been converted to civilian use. And of course the venerable Miranda class is still in fleet service.
It just occurred to me that there is a similarity in design function between the California class and the Steamrunner class. Obviously, the Steamrunner is more angular, and has less depth, with the nacelles integrated into the primary hull, but that could be seen as taking the California class design concept and streamlining it, possibly to make it a more combat-oriented ship (with a smaller profile)? Mostly, I'm looking at the placement of the deflector assembly section. I realize that is a pretty thin argument, but I am having a hard time seeing the designs NOT being related now.
theres a lot of artistic freedom with spacestations; we have seen very few over the years and they could be influenced by the culture of the planet they are located at
So am I the only one that actually likes the Original Series era space-station designs that show up in the expanded universe much better than I do the ones that show up later in the timeline?
I wonder if we will ever see any Discovery-era ships in Lower Decks. I'm mixed on that. If we are going to accept that DISCO is actually set in the Prime Timeline, those ships need to be there, even if just as junkers and old re-purposed ships and museum pieces or just as models or paintings. ON THE OTHER HAND: Lower Decks has done a HELL of a great job sticking with the look of the TOS, Movie, & TNG-VOY eras, and even ENT. But NOW Disco is trying to tell us that those things, at least TOS-wise, never actually looked all that much like they did on screen. But when Lower Decks shows ships and uniforms and such from the TOS era, they look like they did on the original TV show - NOT like they did on DISCO or will look on Strange New Worlds. So maybe best to leave those separate. What WOULD be freaking nice would be for DISCO & Picard to finally get some Movie & TNG/DS9/VOY and post Nemesis ship designs, instead of using ONLY DISCO era ships, even in the Picard and even in the *33nd* century era!!!
@Pumpkin Spice Starfleet has the best of everything. Their tech won't be available to the fleets of member worlds. Earth has a lot of colonies to keep an eye on, they can't expect Starfleet do deal with them all.
there are human civilian ships, but they're very rare in the series. mostly colony ships(maquis raiders, colony transports) and freighters, not sure if the raven is formally starfleet or a civilian ship. there are no earth fleet ships as earth is essentially the center of the federation and has starfleet to fulfill the role of local defence.(federation starfleet is born from earth's own starfleet)
Yes and no. Starfleet ships are essentially human ships. The design lineage is very clear. As for if the planet Earth has it's own ships, that's a lot less clear. Though I don't see why would need any. With Earth being this central to the Federation I'd assume Starfleet will do whatever they ask of them. They may operate a small number of Starfleet ships on their own.
I enjoy Lower Decks, seems that a LOT OF people like the series. While it is satire and goes where Trek doesn't usually go, they seem to be able to balance being funny without upsetting Paramount - while not being over-the-top like Rick and Morty. The ships look good, the characters are fun. My guess, Doomco*k and his fake rage is... wrong again.
The Dedalus Class are maybe in Private use not in starfleet. I think its not realy possible that such old Ships can be endless refited. But a old [2270] refit can [with good care] in private hands make a good Job. As passengerliner or transportships. The both Ships next to the Cerritos are realy Centaur Class but a Refit version. Its logical, this Class has make a damn good job in the Dominion War. Possible that in the 2380th are now fast light patrolships. The Ju'Day Class..hmm...its too big for this. I think its the bigger Crusier Version like the Enginesection of the Yeager Class. The Kumari class...thats funny..but they are realy old...maybe a successor ship class. Shran Class ^^
Lower Decks is quickly proving to be the best Trek out there right now. Lot's of thought put into it and allthough I don't agree with all the character choice they've somewhat toned it down for the second season. It's now essentially TNG with a pronounced streak of self-depricating humor thrown in. It's really putting both STD and PIC to shame. Hopefully viewer numbers will lead the people in charge to realise which one of these shows is what Trek fans actually want. (Hopefully they allready learned this lesson for New Worlds)
This show seems to be an admission that Discovery messed up by redesigning and changing the look of everything for no good reason. And this is more or less how Starfleet vessels should look in Picard as well. A mix of familiar ships and newer designs
I mean there are sources that say the Starfleet Corps of Engineers brought a few of them back to transport team of engineers to various assignements. When all you need is a hull, with some cargo and low warp...sure why not. We know they keep most of their big ships in boneyards, where they wouldn't degrade at all. The shuttles get changed a lot more often and don't get stored at all, plus STD shuttles in Picard is significantly more time than a Deadalus in Lower Decks. It's still weird, but less so.
