Swindale Beck

  • Swindale is a valley in the eastern edge of the Lake District. It’s one of two farms where the RSPB are working together with water company United Utilities to show how nature conservation and water quality improvements can work alongside farming.
A couple of hundred years ago, the Swindale Beck was straightened to create more farmland. While this made sense at the time, it has turned out to be bad news for wildlife and increased the risk of downstream flooding.
The RSPB, United Utilities, the Environment Agency and Natural England have been working together to restore the beck and return it to something like its original, bendy course.

    Excelente projeto e video!

Excellent work and brilliant video thanks. We've walked up Swindale several times, both before and after the work, it's a beautiful valley. The waterfalls at the top are some of the best in the Lake District. We'll go back this spring to see the flowers hopefully. Mosedale is very wet and those old grip channels are hidden and treacherous.

What a project! This was such an inspiring watch. With so much achieved already in so little time, I cannot wait to see what it will be like given a few more years.

Why has it taken 50 years for the light to be seen, let nature look after it's self it knows best,
Now turn all the other fells back to how they were 50 years ago,
Flooding will be less further down stream.
