As an Iranian, I'm not okay with this whole allyship thing. I believe there are some strong similarities between Russia and Iran: both countries' leaders are a bunch of narcissistic men, and both countries are dealing with huge corruption. I'm wishing a better and brighter future for Iran, Russia, and Ukraine as well.
@@aznluvr7 The past is in the past. As someone who is living in Iran, the most important thing for Iranians right now is our freedom. Imagine Germany arguing that it wants to be dominant over its neighbors. I really thought we all understood why this kind of thinking was a thing of the past.

I've watched mnay of these videos, and I have to say many Russians are extremely clever when it comes to expressing an opinion without really expressing it... they express it in disguise. I don't think people in democractic countries know how to do this, as they haven't practiced to do it.
Actually Russia has ALL the necessary resources to become a strong country. (And a good country to live in) The problem is that it is difficult to become strong when you have evil leaders. With all the natural resources, educated people, technological skill and modern infrastructure (in cities) Russia has all the possibilities to be a rich country providing for very comfortable lives of its citizens. Instead people outside cities are poor like in development countries, their male children are dying in the 10 000's. Life is misery to many people. Russia is simply the most underperforming country in the world! The reason? The culture is very receptive for destructive forms of nationalism where Russia must "be powerful". The Russian culture needs a reformation just like christianity once did. Vladolf Putler and his entourage is stopping this reformation and is the direct cause of Russias underperforming and the Russian peoples bad quality of life.
True. From what i learned about Venezuela, it seems like if countries which overly rely on commodities like oil and do not diversify into other sectors are doing worse than others, especially when commodity prices go down(Or if you start a war and Europe slowly stops buying your commodities :D). It is easy in these authoritharian countries to blow that reliable oil money on corruption and politics but then they never get anywhere. They should have innovated other sectors decades ago if they had less corruption and more care for their country and people, instead they wanted to achieve things militarily like in the previous centuries which is not gonna be tolerated anymore. Venezuela used to be the 4th richest country and now it is the poorest country of America. Russia is definitely on the same path right now even though how much poorer it can get is questionable and sad to think about. Norway has a huge sovereign fund put aside to be good even when oil performs badly or does not make money anymore, Saudi Arabia has i think the cheapest cost per barrel and the USA is a technological powerhouse with diversified industries and global currency. :D Russia is in a costy war while being sanctioned to the hell...so "good luck" Vladolf, people used to think he is smarter than that, before he started acting and proved everyone wrong.
Au contraire. Evil leaders are best suited to conquers. No moral qualms to destroy the opponent by any means necessary. They do not make for optimal rulers, mind you.
Russia does NOT have the tech and educated people. Russia could not even drill for their own oil. Western companies had to come in and drill. Russia is not a tech country. When the west pulled out, tech pulled out.

Like that dude said - “Belarus is basically a vassal state of Russia”, it truly reveals what the “liberation” of Ukraine means to Russians. Add another vassal state. Except for the fact, 5mil population of Belarus is not even near the size of Ukraine, tremendous miscalculation on behalf of russian war makers. So sick of being treated by Russia as if we are garbage nation. Everyone should be a servant to majestic nation of Russia, their unbelievable supremacy is sickening to me
That is why Ukraine if fighting so hard, they know what it means. I hope, the day will come in foreseeable future that Belarus will free itself from "ruskij mir".
look at how Lukashenko grovels before Putin, and you will understand what he meant. we don't care about Belarus, Ukraine, the Baltic States, there are a lot of problems in our house
worry not their fascination with their own glory will be drawn from Russia now as poison is drawn from a wound. But first these sanctions and Western weaponry in Ukraine's hands will put the dagger ever deeper into Russias economy and war machine until it finally collapses
Being silent when murder is committed is also a crime. I have no respect towards Russians because they do nothing while their country is killing Ukrainians because of false accusations. There are millions Russians who disagree with Putin, but they stay silent like slaves.

'Authoritarian regimes stick to other authoritarian regimes' Exactly. The same way democratic countries tend to align with one another. Its easier when you share common value and interest.
That is indeed the problem. But Russia is not alone in that list. Western Imperialism didn't go anywhere. Russia could learn something from Germany. Germany's influence is greater than ever because Germany respects its neighbors. The EU countries were always at war with each other up to and including World War II. Since then, it has been possible to discuss disagreements at a table rather than on a battlefield. It has brought prosperity to the population. That was also the hope with Russia when the Soviet Union fell. But now Putin has revived all the enmity which only gives a worse economy to a better life because more money has to go to the military. And unfortunately it will probably be like this for the next 30-50 years. And Russia will lose the economic war for resources. Russia's economy is the size of Spain's. Then add all the other countries in Europe. It will be like the escalation of the last cold war. And it could have gone completely differently.
Germany accepts disagreements? What kind of nonsense is this? We are talking about the same country that imposed in my country a brutal austerity program and when an elected government reacted they almost wipe us out economically (capital controls threat of grexit until the greek government of the time capitulated)... Sure it's not as bad as Russia or USA (because it can't) but its not the saint you describe.
@Sheikh Shaq Yes we created the mess i do not deny that. But Germany went one step ahead and decided to punish us for political reasons. There are several reasons, for sure youth are open to different and various techology/medias. Also there is different between rural and St Peterburg or Moscow.
The guy with the white shirt and glasses seemed to have a good grasp of the realities, but it is sad to see how he has to tip-toe around the question about Putin`s decisions. A strong leader should be able to hear criticism from the regular guys on the street. This kid even seems to be very loyal and patriotic, so something is seriously wrong when someone like that has to hold back his words. Putin has taken Russia on a path that will not end good for Russia unless something is changed in the political structure.
I recall a time in the USA when people were afraid to say anything bad about GW Bush. We were told that we were on the side of the enemy if we didn't "get behind" the president and his bag full of evil cohorts. Turns out that Anti Iraq war citizens were 100% right about the lies. We can say whatever we wish now, except making threats. We can call Biden a buffoon, and not end up in jail.
They were smart but it was all the more harrowing to see how many have some belief along the lines of "it's 'natural' for Russia to want to attack and dominate its neighbours."

@Peter Pan Ah yes, Putin’s propaganda that blamed Hillary Clinton and the CIA for Ukrainians’ desire for Western-style democracy (instead of Russian dictatorship which they already knew)., calling it a “color revolution.” We now know Putin hired an American (Paul Manafort) to help run the corrupt election of Yanukovich. Or at least I would like to believe that large parts of the US population don't approve of the many unjust wars led by their government and the many innocent lives lost in their name.
Biden was right "Putin has to go" The trepidation and evasiveness of what appears to be fine educated Russian citizens about answering these questions is sad. This should not exist in the (especially in the 1st world) 21st century.

People you gathered around you are probably more radical than you /literally brainwashed and they push you forward. similiar things are happen in china, clearly visible in the pelosi situation, where large parts of the brainwashed population and the party are more radical than xi jinping can afford to be for now. 2) Sadly, young wealthy and educated russians in the western oriented cities are in no way representitve for the russian population. It`s basically like interviewing students or tech people in the bay area. tbf most mercans are ignorant to, well quite a lot, but especially, foreign policy. The “empire” is held together with soft power because we control the global currency, and with covert fuckery for countries/leaders who don't play ball.
It really is an Empire though. With Hollywood, JayZ, McDonald's, lgbtq tolerance, ubiquity of English language, occasional lip service to democracy and rule based order, everyone's lulled into thinking the US is not an Empire. Monthly attempt to pull its main rival into armed conflict over an island, daily punishing of ordinary ppl with Almighty dollar sanction...it just goes on
@Val Perry I acknowledge US led system is better than others but to argue it's not an Empire is lunacy because it doesn't fit into 18th century definition of empires . Iraq invasion is perfect example. No country on earth launches invasion based on a lie without fear of repercussion, accountability and gets away with it, no sanction, no investigation, no nothing. or weaponize its currency to subjugate a countries. Ppl say "Oh US does that to bad actors, dictatorships" . What about Imposition of Plaza Accord on Japan? Or coups in Latin America in the name of fighting authoritarianism when it's nakedly at the behest of American corporate interest.
@Val Perry What a counter argument. "I've made some overarching callow analogy, totally nailed it, apples and oranges haha got him". Ah Maybe this is where I say "if it talks like a duck, walks like a.." but nahh I should probably refer you to book by Harvard historian "Colossus: The Rise and Fall of the American Empire" because what do I know.
4:02 He asks if Putin realizes Russia doesn't have enough human resources. Coincidently, Putin just issued a decree this month that brought back the Soviet-era "Mother Heroine" medal for women that give birth and raise 10 or more kids. They also get 1 million rubles after the birth of their 10th child. It is supposed to try to help with Russia's low birth rates and declining population. It might make an interesting future video to ask young women if this new award is an incentive to have a huge family.
by the way, a bill is currently being considered on the payment of a million for 3 and each subsequent child. if this initiative is approved, then such a measure can effectively increase the birth rate.
@@ТатьянаФатеева-г2у Starting the payments at three children would make more sense if the government was really serious about trying to increase the birth rate. Most women are never going to attempt to have 10 kids, regardless of the incentives.
One million rubles is about US$15k. Even with a low cost of living compared to the West, I can't imagine this is enough incentive for Russian women to actually consider having 10 children. Another caveat about this is that all 10 must be alive to receive the award and money. If one dies from cancer or a car crash they don't count. and you would need to have 11 children. Overall it seem slike a gimmick that won't change birth rates at all.
You are doing such a great journalist job with these short interviews while the whole establishment, so called intelectualists, keep their mouths shut. Its a mirror that you are creating and always much needed in every society, no matter which country.
Innovation requires diversity of perspective and motivation either financially or culturally.. In a place where strongmen rule rather than law anything you make will simply be taken from you. Not much incentive to innovate.
Regarding the guy with glasses in the middle of the video, I've often heard that Russia is an autocracy because Russian leaders think that this sort of control is necessary to expand and maintain influence. They do it to become "great", as they see greatness. Then, the idea goes on, Russian leaders feel frustrated that their country is not the best at all things, that it cannot compete well in all domains. I don't agree that any of this is true, reasonable or even logical, but I would like to point out one thing: Great innovation and accomplishment is likely to occur in historical periods where there is 1) an influx of new ideas due to contacts with other cultures because innovation must always stand on the shoulders of giants. When you encounter new ideas and technologies, there is a bloom of invention because new things become possible when you synthesize new ideas. and 2) Innovation can only occur in a fairly free and unhindered environment. This is why google has silly things like ping pong tables, yoga classes, meditation rooms and flexible scheduling. So basically, if Russian leaders really believe all that stuff, then they are actually sabotaging themselves. If so, it's kind of amazing that none of them figured that out yet.
Ideas (and with that, innovation) flourish only where there is freedom of speech. Where people can't speak freely, how could ideas be exchanged? Bu autocratic regimes simply don't care much about development. They care about staying in power. Being in power is the only place where criminals are safe.
I don't think every single one of them is that stupid. I am more confident that they understand everything. They simply pursue other goals, their own, and not the development of the state and the prosperity of their people.
@@geekphone1343 You're saying that their leaders are given complete freedom and power to subjugate anyone to their own, selfish will, right? After listening to Dugin for a long time yesterday, I have to agree with that. He says that the word "man" does not mean individual, in his country. He says that they conceive people only as an aggregate group, not as persons in their own right or even in their own subjective experience. In the face of the body of Russian literary and cultural work, his ideas are edging on delusional, but he asserts them most forcefully, co-opting an apparent misunderstanding of post-modernism to say, literally, that whatever he says is true is really true, and it is true just because he believes it. It is more true if he can get others to believe it. This is the guy who has been informing Putin, so I hear. That explains a great deal. Also, I feel terrible about his daughter getting killed like that. It doesn't change the fact that he is mad, though. Now he, and probably everyone else at the top of the hierarchy, can go even more mad. Strange days have found us.
@@kristalkristal2506 I don't agree Dugin is mad. He's been consistently neo-fascist for the last 40 years. He is himself in all sanity. And Putin will stick to him as long as it's politically benefitial.

It is the same as the bullshit you hear from russians like "i thought you were democratic" whenever we add to the sanction list against them, like democracy has any relavance for that. In their mind, they think democracy is the same as what their childish russian propaganda teach them - chaos, beurocracy, decision avertion, not knowing up from down, night from day etc. watch a report on Russia Today about foreign affairs in europe, and they will focus more on how a western politician fails to do propere etique on a dinnerparty, sort to namecalling and character assasinations, rather then the political happenings and decision. They're somewhat sort of a bit trustworthy. Their values mostly align with ours, even though their standards, human rights, etc are lower than ours. And they are most likely not going to invade their neighbours. So that is why we prefer the USA over Russia.
Great follow-up questions: 1. "Why do we NEED to be in opposition with the US and Europe?" 2. "What common interests do we have with the US and Europe? (too bad he didn't answer it)
Your questions reminded me of a talk I had in Moscow 2010/2011. It ended with my phrase: If the USA would (after years of research) reveal that 1+1=2, Russia would say: No, everything, but not 2. It is hilarious, if every argument, no matter how valid, is denied and you are told: It is the opposite.
The need for opposition is a classic tool of dictators to unite the country, bring support to the government and justify the insane spending on military budget instead of education or infrastructure. They need a boogeyman to explain why half the world hates them "the US is forcing the EU to sanction us" it's alot less harsh than the truth. the bottom line is that the government practically does not finance scientific activities/etc., so "people with brains" prefer to pursue a career in the West. history repeats itself again, now there is a 5th wave of emigration. During the 4th, a lot of really good personnel left Russia: for example, about 40,000 professors, a couple of them even received Nobel prizes. but what difference does it make, the authorities prefer to spend money on murders in a neighboring country

I have watched many of the videos on this channel and the common theme with the people interviewed is fear. A very real fear of being imprisoned just for expressing an opinion. There's no good future for a people willing to tolerate that sort of government.

Most of these people are thoughtful, and seem to be well informed. They are also realist within their own society, and very aware of saying the wrong thing. And what the consequences of that would be.
I think the fella that says you cant criticize Putin should be enough to realize how bad Russia is. In the States we can criticize our government without worrying about getting sent to a gulag. Same with Europe. I definitely know where i wanna be and where I don't. Hopefully Ukraine can come out victorious.
Thank you Daniil and friends. Curious that open imperialism seems okay for some in Russia! People are understandably cautious and reticent - mostly... There is much talk of power, national interests, and profits (capitalism), but little of Human Rights and democracy. So people are subjects - passive observers of events rather than citizens in Russia. This is sad. Whatever one thinks about capitalism human rights and democracy have to be preserved and defended. Nations need to be allowed agency to decide their own futures - and this includes Ukraine - and other ex-soviet republics.
The attitude that a regional hegemon has the right to dominate its neighbours, is not so absurd and limited to a Russian autocrat. The US has for many decades shaped the political geography in its region (and beyond) to serve its economic interests and to satisfy its economic concerns, by using open military and more often covert intelligence operations. Many times violating human rights and ínternational law. It is called (when applied to the Americas) „Monroe Doctrine“. The school of American „realists“, of which John Mearsheimer is a representative, - in all fairness - support the Russian position in its relations with Ukraine and other neighbouring states. China does not seem so different in its policy and claims. Those are of course attitudes and practices that democrats have to oppose in any instance they become apparent.

These are brilliant questions which make the interviewed think and provide good answers. Some have to tiptoe around the truth for fear of reprisals though. I hope this channel can keep up with this good work. I would not have the courage and get of Russia instead.
All countries that cooperate with the USA are lower in status. A curious statement given the United States has the largest economy, largest army and largest per capita in the world. So by this chaps measure everyone is lower not just those that cooperate. As for empires, well the British had the largest one in history. A small island with limited human and economic resources but excellent intellectual resources.
The girl who answered Israel in the beginning is a real beauty. I'm guessing she may be Jewish, or at least part Jewish. It's true that Israel and Russia have had a fairly close relationship since the fall of the USSR, but that's all at risk now due to the war. Once Russia changes its foreign policy to a more diplomatic one, there is a strong potential for further closer ties between Russia and Israel.
Because they still see themselves as "above" those countries because they're "white europeans" when their values much more closely align with Iran and North korea.
Excellent comments in the replies here, and some great suggested questions. I would be interested in answers to the same questions in the regions outside Moscow, and a wider age range. More suggested questions: 1. What is more important - living standards and freedoms in Russia, or military/dominating other countries? This is the best kind of pro-Russia channel. After an evening of reading about war crimes and other atrocities being committed by the Russian military in Ukraine, this channel cleanses my palate and reminds me that there are still many Russians who are sane, intelligent people trapped in a system run by toadies, gangsters, and an egomaniac.
People are so dump Russia could have had a better relationship with Europe than the US without being agressive. It's not like we Europeans like everything the US does and simply agree with it. But now with the war we Europeans have no other chance than seeking protection from the US....
What I have learnt from this channel over the last months is the fact that you have many, many smart people over there in Russia, especially young, educated people in urban areas. Big parts of "the collective West" as well as Russians do not consider each other enemies. They are wiser than their political leaders by far.
The gentleman at 2:45 assessed it nicely. Russia has always striven for empire, but simply seems unable to get out of its own way in self-sabotaging things. If it could shed itself of the czar-serf culture, it could be a tremendously powerful and influential country, but it seems allergic to democracy (or something like it) and never has been able to manage communism in any effective way. Another person sized up things with another point, by noting that the west is open to risk (and failure...and resurrection/redemption), whereas much of the east is not. The western hemisphere was built by those who, for one reason or another, had to take a risk, it's so embedded in our cultures that it's become part of our genetic makeup.
Man, you can really see the difference in the video of the small town with the older population. A lot of these younger people feel a way but know better than to voice it.

The change will never come if they don´t aknowlege their past crimes.

Hitler had the same policy.....

He says that they conceive people only as an aggregate group, not as persons in their own right or even in their own subjective experience. I have a question, what do Russians think of Greeks? We used to have strong ties but now because of the war, Putin ended up considering us as an "unfriendly country". We have nothing against Russian people, all sensible people know that its Putin's fault. I wish thia world gets the peace it deserves!

@Peter Pan what isn't?
facepalm. Russian propaganda is aimed at Russia, so maybe it's just propaganda => your propaganda, which represents the Russian philistine?
@Peter Pan how?
@@HM-iy3dc Some people belive having a perspective is the equivalent of propaganda. They don't distinguish the delibarete denyal of facts and reality wich Russian state propganda does, and having an opinion on something leaning towards some kind of perspective is propadanda, somehow. All in all, it just comes down to people talking about "western side propaganda" are usually not that educated, not that smart, and often very bitter and vengeful. Very much like fox news, wich btw is also western with a very different perspective on things, wich completly destorys any notion of western propaganda. But in the world for people in authoritarian countries with state controlled media, they don't understand this.
Keep up the good work
Thanks, Jay!
03:12 Europe doesn't think much of the USA. And that opinion is degrading even further. But, as far as allies go, they're not the worst.
They're somewhat democratic. They're somewhat sort of a bit trustworthy. Their values mostly align with ours, even though their standards, human rights, etc are lower than ours. And they are most likely not going to invade their neighbours.
So that is why we prefer the USA over Russia.
Great follow-up questions:
1. "Why do we NEED to be in opposition with the US and Europe?"
Space is the only interest I can think of the problem is Russia wants to be on the level of the US and China but they don't have the influence or cash to get even close putin is so power-hungry and obsessed with being a great tsar he set Russia on a course of once again crumbling there is no common ground I'm afraid
If Russia ever would become a democracy, I think many Russians would make the young man 3:26 president. And I think he would reach level Obama. No?

When will russians understand that politicians exist to serve the population and not the other way round

The guy 2:43 says Russia needs human intellectual resources. But listening to him and many others on this channel it's obvious to me that Russia does have great intellectual resources.
Intellects in chains and shackles.
the bottom line is that the government practically does not finance scientific activities/etc., so "people with brains" prefer to pursue a career in the West. history repeats itself again, now there is a 5th wave of emigration. During the 4th, a lot of really good personnel left Russia: for example, about 40,000 professors, a couple of them even received Nobel prizes. but what difference does it make, the authorities prefer to spend money on murders in a neighboring country

Iran and North Korea! Would’ve been interesting to hear what some of the older generation thought of these allies - clearly the younger generation have a similar view to their western brothers and sisters.
I have watched many of the videos on this channel and the common theme with the people interviewed is fear. A very real fear of being imprisoned just for expressing an opinion. There's no good future for a people willing to tolerate that sort of government.

I think the fella that says you cant criticize Putin should be enough to realize how bad Russia is. In the States we can criticize our government without worrying about getting sent to a gulag. Same with Europe. I definitely know where i wanna be and where I don't. Hopefully Ukraine can come out victorious.
The woman with curly hair wearing that blue blouse is so stunningly beautiful
2:59 aah yes, the glorious American empire of the United States and its mighty emperor Joe Biden
Dominant Power....you made my day....
Open imperialism seems ok for many people in many countries unfortunately
Exactly, it’s a nation of slaves. It’s not really the Sparta they wanted us to believe.. We Finns knew that.
@GoodMan You are apparently producing your comments by random selection of words from a Russian dictionary. - Or you are a strange version of a Russian bot (?). - No content on your channel.
You interview some really intelligent and insightful people. It’s important for people in the west to see this side of Russia. Stay safe and keep up the great work.
Young Russians speaking truth. Keep posting Q/A videos . Great 👍 job
Yeah she is very beautiful
israel is just as genocidal as russia?

Another great episode. I’m glad to see as much laughter over NKorea & Iran as allies.
Everyone seems to be nervous about the Stasi getting them...
I love the look of disgust on their faces when they hear "North Korea and Iran, could they be good allies of Russia?"
Yeah they're like: SERIOUSLY ??? WTF... where does this end....
All were laughing on that suggestion.
Because they still see themselves as "above" those countries because they're "white europeans" when their values much more closely align with Iran and North korea.
Excellent comments in the replies here, and some great suggested questions.
I would be interested in answers to the same questions in the regions outside Moscow, and a wider age range.
More suggested questions:
1. What is more important - living standards and freedoms in Russia, or military/dominating other countries? (Would you rather spend money on improving living standards inside RF or military?/invading other countries?)
2. Is income, standard of living in RF low compared with US and Europe? Why?
3. Why don't any countries do to RF what RF is doing to Ukraine? How would you feel if they did?
Ukraine very best ally.

I know Moscow isn’t a direct reflection of Russia as a whole considering rural Russians fully support Putin but some of these people just seem like they deserve so much better.

No they don't. They have to acknowledge their responsibility for the deaths and destruction that is going on in Ukraine. They have to understand that their "I'm not interested in politics" position is exactly what caused this war
@@oleksandrfomin326 yeah sure everyone who happened to be born in Russia has responsibility, wonderful logic. Even in democratic countries most regular people have very little power and influence and in autocratic ones it is much worse
Get real, no one is holding you guys hostage.
You don’t have to ‘seek’ anything, do you? Haven’t you had the protection for the last 75 years?
Russia is a country that has to reboot itself for every 80 years
@@Sami-ye1lt Just curious, how is that? At what 80 year points has Russia rebooted/reinvented itself?
Man, you can really see the difference in the video of the small town with the older population. A lot of these younger people feel a way but know better than to voice it.
Last guy genuienly thinks up to be a privileged people. By the grace of God, neighboring countries belong to them, and they should be grateful to them for their existence. Against this background, why they have no ally is excpected.
Putinism has made its job and his confidence is so high its overflowing.
