  • This week San Jose moved to clear out hundreds of homeless people from one of the largest encampments in the Bay Area -- and the country. Known as "The Jungle," it was just 10 miles from the headquarters of tech giant Apple. City and county agencies have spent millions of dollars on services, affordable housing and housing vouchers, but critics say it's not enough. Scott Shafer visited "The Jungle" shortly before the evictions began.

      no worries one day you'll get old too or disabled like me and if you were living paycheck to paycheck things like ssi might help (a little if not at all) or by that time it will be taken away from you too and the life you might have had or wanted to keep for you and your kids blah blah blah.....I ask you......how does one live in this day and age wanting to be a part of "society" on $850.00 a month without being homeless Anywhere!!!!! in California The fact is You Can't You figure out that equation and i'm on board and i'll do what can not to be "homeless" if you or the city or the community can keep me up with the cost of living....while disabled living out of my car.....housing list is 7 years

    the social services/human resources department need to give need to give these homeless people jobs in the fields picking fruits and nuts. instead we have an issue with immigrants coming in and overpopulating taking jobs from Americans that have been here for Generations. I see it as theft! leaving hard working Americans stuck with no jobs or place to go. yes some of these folks are just useless and ignorant about there homeless situation trashing the place of course they can't be helped. but there is a percentage of them that need to get on disability or if pointed in the right direction and given a job will follow threw and continue on a path towards a better tomorrow.

    Homeowners cannot randomly build where they want to - they are required to own the land they are going to build on, AND make darned sure the land is Zoned for whatever they have in mind, AND get permits! It should be the same for the homeless. If a huge piece of land MILES away from the city was given to the homeless, there is another question, WHERE ARE THE HOMELESS GETTING THEIR MONEY AND THEIR FOOD???? It's coming from the community, whether they want it or not.

    Embrace minimalism especially if you're homeless, all that crap is dragging you down. Have 2 or 3 jeans, several shirts, a coat, some underwear, some socks and 2 pairs of shoes. Along with some toiletry items. It should all fit in a backpack or small suitcase.
    Maybe set up capsule hotels with shower, laundry and cooking facilities to give people a chance to get back up.

      @V.E.R.O. 5 лет назад +1

      @C. Michael You lack reading comprehension, nowhere in my comment do I say or imply that. Let me simplify it for you, it's much harder to move around from place to place and to access resources when you're pushing around 1 or 2 carts of stuff cause you're afraid another homeless will steal or it will get thrown away.

    I live really close to this encampment and when they shut it down all the homeless came towards my neighborhood and set up their camps along our fences. Usually I would not mind if they kept to themselves, but they started screaming at night, throwing their trash over our fence, and leaving alcohol bottles and drug residue in our trash cans and side walks. After we let it go the first few times, more encampments started being set up and they were literally fighting each other over what part of the sidewalk was theirs by throwing glass bottles at each other and leaving a mess on the roads! We called the cops that day but nothing happened, A few days later, my neighbors daughters were walking home from school and some of the men from the homeless encampment smiled at them before cat calling them..... UM They're in ELEMENTARY SCHOOL!!! My neighbor was pissed and called the police right away and when the cops showed us they just towed one of their cars and left?? Eventually what ended up happening is we signed a petition to have them removed from the area and the city got it done many months later. Almost 3 years later and they still wander around my neighborhood and look in our houses at night, not sure what to do about it and I'm not sure why they stay in this certain area so long?

      i know what you mean, Where i live in Canada b.c Vancouver area, money has been spend on housing and rehab services in hopes of reducing homeless population but all it really does is create more problems from homeless from other cities hearing about new services and they all come out of the wood work by coming to where the services are but then not getting any because they are not local residents, and the homeless population then doubles...
