This was a great video. I play in a youth (14-25) orchestra. It is quite clear that some of the parents don't know not to clap during the middle of the symphony. They now do an announcement at the beginning and then the clapping is led by the course staff who know when it is actually the end. When I was younger we generally played in white shirts with black trousers/skirt because most people had that as school uniform anyway. And yes, I agree that sitting in the choir is the most fun place to see all the performers. Also definitely agree with the don't sit at the front thing. My parents have been disappointed a few times because they sat towards the front and then couldn't see me playing the flute behind all the strings.
Just to confuse the issue . . . as a composer, we used to show up in our pants sans shirts, wearing top hats and suspenders, and would clap loudly at inappropriate moments just to irritate the stodgy old farts that used to populate the concert halls. We would boo stuffy, safe old favourites and war horses, and cheer riotously for anything new and different. It was the 60's, when Stravinsky, Khatchaturian, Shostakovich, Messiaen, Ligeti, and others were still living.

Ah that’s so good to hear! Yes quite a few youth orchestra do the white tops, it’s a good idea! X
I love balcony seats or the choir loft, I am a bassoonist so I want to see the winds!
Absolutely! I find it very entertaining watching the percussionists run around as well 😂 x

Haha fair play! Next time I’ll had a post script to say “follow the audience around you UNLESS they’re wearing top hats and suspenders…” 😂
@@heatherhawken One person's Ubu Roi is another's pointless anarchy. You need an Alfred Jarry to stir things up now and then.
