I know it proclaims itself to be clear and perfect but it's actually full of contradictions. It says there should be no fighting except in self defense. It also says there should be no compulsion in religion. But it also has revelations that plan attacks, four months in advance, against polytheist pagans who haven't converted to Islam. Now I ask you . . . is that self defense? Is that no compulsion in religion? You look unsure to me. Okay, how about this? It's the revelation of abrogation (naskh), sura 2:106 . . . We do not abrogate a verse or cause it to be forgotten except that We bring forth [one] better than it or similar to it. Do you not know that Allah is over all things competent? As is everything else in the Quran, this revelation is the literal word of God. It tells us that when we encounter apparent contradictions in the Quran, they're not really contradictions, they're abrogations. Since Allah only offers improvements to prior revelations, the latest revelation always prevails over the earlier one. It's self-evident that the revelation of abrogation would not be necessary if not for the contradictions in the Quran: that it, indeed, admits to them. But that's not all. The Quran is difficult to grasp because it has no narrative (unlike the Old or New Testaments). First of all, it's not compiled in chronological order. The Quran has no temporal flow. The chronological order was ignored and the result is no sense of time line. As you read it, you will have no clue to the storyline because it's arranged with the longer suwar first, then the shorter suwar after. Without a chronology, the Quran is just a collection of revelations from Allah. Revelations were directed at Muhammad and his followers, the early Muslims. The context of these revelations were their struggle and their experiences. They understood them just fine because they were living them. But that was 14 centuries ago. Fortunately, we have ahadith that preserves most of the context of Quranic revelations. It's a real chore, but you can cross-reference the Quran to ahadith and get a better picture of what the revelations were about. Fortunately, most scholars agree about the order of suwar in the Quran. There's some differences but, mostly, we know which suwar were early (Meccan) and which were later (Medinan). When you study the Quran in chronological order, it's much easier to see the transformation from persecuted prophet of Mecca to warlord prophet of Medina. This transformation culminates in the next-to-last revelation, sura 9 (At-Tawbah). This is the famous sura about establishing the world's first Islamic state. It contains the Verse of the Sword (9:5) and is all about justifying, and planning and preparing for, the purge of polytheist pagans from the Hijaz region of Arabia. No sura demonstrates naskh as emphatically as sura 9. You guys really should read it.
