- In this video, i teardown my first 4AT/Phase2 Subaru transmission, this trans has all individual solenoids versus a solenoid pack. Not a bad unit to work on, the overhaul went smooth and the trans worked nice on the road test. Thanks for watching, Happy holidays.

the best mechanic and specialist of gearbox..! thanks for your help.
Thank you, Happy Holidays
Happy holidays Gary! My Windstar is stll going strong every since you helped me through the rebuild process.
Awesome, glad to hear, happy holidays
Hey Gary your videos are the most informative I’ve found thank you! I cannot for the life of me find where to buy the transfer clutch. I replaced the transfer clutch solenoid and still have binding so I need to replace the actual clutch I suppose. I do know for certain I have a phase 2. All 6 solenoids are in the pan.
Many Tnx Master, for share,
Hi! My Subaru Impreza 4EAT has a shock between 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 2nd, but only when warm. When cold, change from N to R, or P to R, also has a shock. I suspect the Line Pressure Solenoid is the issue. My mechanic has changed the clutch packages and some gaskets and pistons, and also changed the Transmission Mount. After this rebuild the transmission got better, but still with the issue. What do you think can be? Thanks Gary
Wishing you a successful 2018 dear Gary! And thanks again for sharing your precious working time!
Thanks you too, nice photo, i am a pilot too.
I've found it is much easier to take the case apart if you unbolt the pinion shaft retainer and drive the pinion/pinion bearing out first, separate from the pump case.
Yes, you are correct, i've done that a few times. Happy Holidays
Thank for your information
I have 2008 Outback The transmission I pull out from the car doesn’t have a external filter and the neutral safety switch has nine wires on it I purchased transmission transmission has a external filter also the neutral safety switch has more wires the plug is the same is it gonna work on my car or not thank you
Hi Gary, Thanks for the Video, Very Helpful !!! Can You Recommend a Good Rebuild Kit ? Thanks!
I use TransTec Overhaul kits
Other than going to a dealer for factory automatic transmission fluid. Is there an aftermarket transmission fluid you can recommend to use in a 2013 Subaru Forester 4eat?
you can use a premium fully synthetic fluid
Hi Gray ! do you think subaru's 4eat is durable than 5eat? thanks
Another question is the bearings off stator shaft, the inner and outer I guess, what is the name of them/part # . Can't seem to find them anywhere, or the original name of the bearings. You have helped with these videos so much!! Referred your videos to friend.
could you send me pictures

Hey Gary 5EAT converter wasn't seated all the way. Went to drive the car got to about 40 heard a bang engine reved to redline and stalled sounded like TC bolts snapped. Car won't move now any chance the pump is still usable? And can I replace the pump with the engine out trans in the car?
Have to pull the diff off, depending on how that converter was installed, pump maybe bad, you will hav to take it out from the trans and open it
Question, needing to change broke stator. Do I have to remove the bottom body to do so or could I leave that alone and do the rest?? Love the video, huge help.
just to confirm, your talking about the front of the unit where the pump is
Yes behind torque converter, the stator has to be replaced. But didn't want to remove the valve body(believe that's the name). So do we have to take it totally apart or can we just do the simple way?
@@lauraduffell5598 The pinion is on that too. You would have to take the back of the unit apart so the pinion shaft will come out with the stator, valvebody should not have to come out
Thanks so much for your help and your videos!!!
Even my mechanic did not know about the fuse to disconnect the drive to the rear diff.
Ok, yes, some may and some may not
Hello! I have a Forester XT 2.0 turbo 2003/2004 with 4eat phase 2 gearbox. The gearbox works in all forward gears normally but when I go to downshift, the first gear doesn't downshift, only the first gear doesn't downshift, what could it be?

Hello Gary. Last year you helped me with my Subaru 4EAT rear diff / transfer case, whatever it is, and everything worked out great. I now have a new issue. No reverse. Back in February my '97 Legacy GT overheated, badly. Blow head gasket which I later learned had already been blown and "fixed" with some additive. I successfully replaced the gaskets, eventually got it fired up, went to back it out of the garage and..... no reverse. I got all the wheels off the ground onto jack stands and noticed something a bit strange. Not only does reverse not work but the wheels spin, forward, in neutral. Gear selection feels fine, reverse lights come on. I took off the neutral safety switch, reinstalled, it seems fine. What in the world is going on here? I was so happy when I successfully replaced the head gaskets but that joy was short lived. Is this something I can fix or is it time to throw in the towel?
So let me ask you, does the car move forward in neutral? I think i may know whats going on
It does. Not as much as when it's in drive but more than it should considering it's in neutral.
ok, so what's probably going on here is the forward clutch or some of the forward clutches are locked on. This will cause a forward movement in neutral and also cause no reverse. No reverse because normally the forward clutch is released but with it being locked together it cant release.
Is there an easy fix for this? Or a fix at all?
FatalDischarge Trans has to come out and taken apart to fix forward clutch
gary you seem to be the only person i can find that knows their way around these , can i contact you??

Hello Gary, I'm currently building one of these units, but it says Phase 2. Is there a phase 1 anywhere?
may be the early models from late 90's (i think)
@@GaryFerraro okay thanks. Like you in that video, this is my first time doing this unit.
The 4eat Phase 2 in my 2005 Outback AWD is binding. I want to perform a pressure test of the transfer clutch solenoid. Can you tell me please where I can find the pressure port? Is it still on the tail shaft housing or on the main body because of the relocated transfer solenoid? Thank you very much
Under the hood there should be a spot for a fuse, it would say AWD, install a fuse and it becomes 2WD, as a test you should do this first
I put the awd fuse in and it went to front wheel drive. I am guessing the transfer frictions and the clutch housing is okay because it's releasing. I'm assuming the transfer solenoid is not regulating correctly. Do you agree that I should change the transfer solenoid?
@@sportman4000 Yes, the solenoid is usually the problem
@@GaryFerraro thank you
@@sportman4000 Welcome
What was that you used to split the extension? Chisel ?
Yes, was stuck on the dowel pins
@@GaryFerraro THANKYOU !!! Il try tomorrow
