    I’d say the Broadway Limited 4014 is clearly the winner. Better performance, better sound, impressive!

    Smoke and steam patterns from the MTH look more realistic.
    I like the colors from the BL though. And BL had a MUCH smoother take off.

      Makes me wonder. I have a Railking 2-8-8-2 with smother slow speed operation than the big boy in this video. Noticed the whistle sound on the BLI was horrible. And the overall sound was very "tinny".

    Howdy Neil.
    Thanks to both of your videos regarding BLI's Big Boy, I made the purchase back in late March for the #4014.
    It's been one purchase I've never regretted, and I thoroughly love the detail the locomotive has. Every time I run this behemoth, I'm always surprised by something new from him, especially his slow speed performance and sound.
    Hope to see more videos of the Big Boy in action on your layout in the future.
    Hank

    Both the MTH and BLI models of the UP Big Boy seem impressive, but i will say that the BLI model is the superior model due to the additional model weight along with the smoking steam whistle.

      Edward Velez might not be flickering. It could be that the camera shutter speed is causing that. The lightbulb actually has a frequency that sometimes a camera can pick up.

    Nice vid and I know its old and I read the comments and saw that the MTH had a bent rod. I was going to comment it operated like it was out of quarter. Anyway all these "BLI is the best" comments kill me. I like BLI, I have 10 or more of their steam locos including 4014. I also have 4005 MTH. I have never pulled more than 30ish cars with my BLI and I know it will pull a ton more but I wanted to get that out there before this. I have had mine for a little over a year. It had about 1.5 hours total run time on it and went completely bezerk. Chuff would not sync with the wheels then it wouldn't move then it would take off at full speed.
    Ended up sending it back to BLI. They replaced the decoder AND the motor. This took all of 2.5 months BTW. I got it back and put maybe 40 minutes of run time on it pulling nothing at all and bamm the decoder is blown again. I have never had this issue with any of my other BLIs but this is seriously approaching stupid. I have hours on my MTH and NEVER have had an issue. Not a fan of the wireless draw bar but so far its been OK. Yeah the BLI looks better but that doesn't mean much when it doesn't work.
    BLI is sending me ANOTHER decoder and Ill give that a try. If it fails again Ill just rip all the Paragon three crap out and wire a WOW Sound or Tsunami Steam2 in it. I bought a BLI Challenger off eBay that wasn't running and did this and its one of the best running locos I own.

    • @NeilADahl

      One thing that I have learned is to never put locos on the track with power to the track. I turn the block off the place locos on track. Since I started doing that I have not had a decoder of any brand fail. Also running a DCC into a DC block will cause problems sometime. My personal experience. Neil

    • @NeilADahl
      @NeilADahl  7 лет назад +1

      Jon, FYI All of the engines sound are turned down from Default 128 to between 30 and 40 depending on the engine. The Rolling Thunder recommends turning the dial on the subwoofer to 75% which shakes the house and becomes overpowering pretty quick it is impressive but I keep it at 40%. The subwoofer control in the CVs is also set at 30 to 40 again by engine and also to make them sound different. I think the lower setting give good fill in bass without being overpowering. The way the engines are set up the Bell is set so the whistle drowns out the bell... and then the chuff is also set so it is drowned out almost by the whistle, then as the train goes off in the distance the whistle is the main thing one hears, and remember the RT fades at a certain distance. I spent hours relocating the RT receiver to get the fade in and out to make it as realistic as possible. On RUclips settings if you set the volume control to between 20% to 25% that is pretty close to what you will hear in person. I believe the microphone on the Sony camera is a little hot at the distance that I am shooting.
      Good to hear that you enjoyed the videos.

    That MTH has a lot of binding below about 20mph.In my opinion,the slower a loco can crawl, the better it is.Even the BLI is not great.I do have a BLI Blueline with a Zimo (I thnk) decder, & that thing you can just see the side rods move, if you look closely, speed step one. Ok it has basic sounds,no smoke,but one of THE best running locos, I have.Last count I have close to 300 locos, steam & diesel.

      Jon, The layout is 13' 2" x 8' The Frame is 1x4 white pine with 2x4 legs 1x4 white pine risers support the 3/4 inch plywood roadbed. I would say it is freelanced although it has features of some of the plans from the 101 track plans. but it has the double loop for the HO and a similar double loop for the HOn3. The HO station track has a 24" radius and the outside yard has a 26" radius. The HO has a max grade of 1.5%, I think the HOn3 peaks at 2%. The scenery is screen wire with plaster. it is 47" tall at the front edge. Overall picture: neildahl.com/T&PLayout.jpg Neil

    The sound of BLI is actually more prototypical, but not corrected when compared to vintage film recordings of Big Boy. In my opinion, the sound of MRC that came in the Genesis Challengers, first gen, is the closest to the real thing. The MTH sound recordings are from a smaller locomotive. By the way, that chuff sound is used in other MTH HO locomotives. Same problem on the Athearn Genesis Big Boy that uses incorrect Tsunami chuff sounds.
    Correct sound files is one thing. Sound quality is another point. Overall, MTH locomotives tend to sound better, because 2 reasons: tender bodies are usually in die cast and quality of speakers AND their enclosures are better quality and design. The BLIs tend to sound not very good of the box, because the come with volume cranked to max, where the amplifier distorts, the tender shell vibrates and on the end of speakers volume capacity. This is particularly noticeable when the whistle is blown. So, if you lower the BLI volume to 2/3, most of sound problem goes away. Very few BLI have quality sound as good as MTH. Recently, I heard the Milw S3 and its sound file and quality is very good. Most of BLI brass hybrids are have very good sound. Which exceptions of Hudsons that I suspect is the same recordings of decade ago. BLI sound quality and drivetrain keeps improving. As opposed to MTH which still the same. This video clearly shows the verdict

  • @struck2soon

    The sound and smoke on the BLI version are poor....the MTH does a better job there.(BLI sounds more like a snare-drum!) But the BLI is clearly equipped with a superior motor and drive. I guess you need to decide whether it's more important to haul 100 cars or be able to look and listen to a more prototype loco...

    • @jomama05
      @jomama05 7 лет назад +6

      MTH's sounds need updating. Sounds exactly the same as the 2010 models. Their sound system sounds like snare drums more than BLI's. A bit disappointing for something that costs an arm and a leg.

      good assessment...although don't really agree about the MRC decoders fitted to the early Big Boys and Challengers.(I have both and can't wait to change them!) Having seen recent demos by George Bouglias(spelling?) of the Tsunami2 it seems pretty good, as does the offering from ESU Loksound. I also have a single MTH brass hybrid (UP 4-12-2) and a single BLI brass hybrid (UP 2-10-2; you may have noticed a theme emerging here?) and whilst the sound is pretty good my one gripe is that the sound emits from the tender which just sounds wrong as soon as you get closer than 6 feet to your loco...a decent sugar cube in smokebox would almost certainly sound better.

Mine are the 1.5 volt version they are set up to run on a !.2 volt rechargeable battery it takes about 12 hours to run the battery down, but the bulbs should last longer. At least the BLI did not display any wheel slippage, unlike the MTH displayed!
    The BLI had a far smoother start/stop performance than had the MTH.
    Strictly on the viewing of this video, I would purchase the BLI product over the MTH product.

  • @choochoo3985

    I suppose the MTH needs break-in as it really stuttered in forward and reverse. The only plus with the MTH is the blower for the smoke. Rolling thunder makes the ground shake which is what the actual Big Boy did. However that said in my opinion the Rolling thunder works better in diesel operation. I do have Rolling Thunder and really believe it needs work as it doesn't really reduce or increase the sound effect as the loco comes and goes. Plus you can't move from the spot of the speaker. BUT; I like it.

      Hi Jon, as for moving the wheel sets to be out of sync, I've done it with practically all my double-driver set locos (including rod drive electrics) and it's quite straightforward.
      Each set of drivers is connected to the motor with a worm gear sitting on top of the gear tower. There is a plastic cover on top of this holding the worm gear down to the other gears underneath it. The plastic cover is held down by four tabs-one on each corner. Use a small flat-head screwdriver to prise the tabs out and up - I've found it best to do one side at a time (be careful not to snap off those tabs, I did so on one of my locos and now the plastic cover is only held down by three tabs instead of four). Usually if you prise open one side the whole cover should pop off. With this plastic cover removed you can lift the worm gear and its end of the motor shaft up until it comes free of the gears underneath. You will find that the wheels on that set now move freely and you can move them to where you want them. Having done this drop the worm gear back into its place on the top of the gear tower (you may have to move the wheels slightly to get the worm gear to engage with the gears below it). Check that the motor is driving both the wheelsets by moving the flywheel with your finger or thumb and then push the plastic cover back on and you should be all set.
      You only have to do this with one set of drivers.
      Dennis

      They both back up with 10 cars... but more than 10 causes a tender derailment normally . My Turnouts are #6. On flat track they might do more but on my layout they are pushing the cars uphill when there are more than 10 or so cars. Neil

    Oh, crap. This is a tough one. The MTH is bigger, and I love the coal in the tender, but it doesn’t have much design. The Broadway Limited, has perfect design, but it isn’t as big as I was hoping for it to be, but it imports a lot more cars than the MTH. But it’s called a “Big Boy” because it’s the Iargest locomotive ever built, so the fact that it isn’t as big as the other one, kinda kills the mood. I have absolutely no idea what to choose

    • @NeilADahl
      @NeilADahl  6 лет назад +3

      They are both the same length and boiler diameter, it is an illusion from the camera angle. There is one thing that impacts length the MTH does not couple very close to the tender so it can go around 18 inch curves. The Broadway Limited couples at a closer prototypical spacing and does not have coal since the plan is for #4014 to be fired by oil after it's restoration.

      Linda, As commented below the MTH had an eccentric rod bent on the engineer's side that was causing a bind in the running gear, it was not noticed until after the video was published... and since both engines are operating on the exact same track... the track is not the issue. Something of interest about the MTH... several viewers have pointed out that the MTH does no have the steam turbine on it. I had never noticed it, but in reviewing MTH's catalogs I discovered that they apparently never put this detail part on their Big Boy's. No mbig deal but It caught me off guard. 4012 and 4014 are running great now. Hopefully one day UP will senf #4014 down to Texas like they used to do with #3985 and I will get to see her run. Thanks for your comments. Neil

    I HATE how MTH puts the same chuff on almost all of their engines. and BLI put whistle steam on the big boy which I think was a first in HO. I have 3 MTH Locomotives and they all have flickering lights. I don't like that either. BLI totally won.

    I do not like the swiveling rear engine underneath the boiler, not prototypical. In my view, scale models should not do this. Otherwise, both are nice models with MTH clearly winning when it comes to smoke performance. Sounds? I can go either way.

    The MTH may not have the whistle smoke (the whistle shouldn't be spewing smoke anyway, it should be steam) but BLI's smoke looks so fake who cares to see more fake smoke. The MTH has much more prototypical looking smoke. Plus you can get all different smoke smells from MTH, from Grampa's Pipe to Frying Bacon! I own several BLI locomotives and a couple of MTH engines as well and my vote goes to MTH for performance and overall quality. The customer service when you call MTH is outstanding. I can't even get BLI to return an email.

    • @NeilADahl
      @NeilADahl  7 лет назад

      Smoke scents really nothing to do with loco appearance or performance, But JT's Mega Steam fluid comes in 44 different scents if that is what someone is looking for. BTW Both are operating with smoke fills of JT's NADA...close to being odorless and can be used in both MTH and BLI. Drop for drop JT's seems to provide more smoke and steam. I have no bone in either camp... with that said I have about 15 MTH and 15 BLI locos the only failures I have had have been with MTH and average about $200.00 for each repair, none of the BLI's have had performance failure. Customer service for both companies email and phone has always been excellent. BTW did you know that BLI has 4 CV's for smoke adjustments with over 100 values per CV so that one can tailor the smoke to their wishes? MTH has 4 settings including Off. As this was an out of the box test all setting were factory at the time of this video. Since I like both they will stay on my layout.

    Sorry people MTH is way better! The MTH drive wheels look larger and more real prototype Big Boy. Also BLI has only one ash-pain wheel on the right side, when the real thing has too & there painted Red. Also this guy is running his MTH with out trackshion tires! The BLI has tires, not a fair test. My dad's MTH Big Boy would run circle's around thar BLI.

    • @NeilADahl
      @NeilADahl  6 лет назад +2

      Linda, Both are good engines but you are incorrect on some of your assumptions. The drive wheels on both engines are the same exact size, the MTH has it's traction tires on it in this video... so both engines are traction tire equipped. The BLI is the version #4014 that is being restored by Union Pacific at this time... it will not have ash pans because it is going to be fueled by oil and has an oil bunker instead of a coal bunker. If UP decides to paint some levers, handles or wheels red then when they have it restored and running that will be a quick fix with a paint brush. Neil

    1. It looks like you have some bad places in your truck. MTH Locos have Vary good electrical pickup. Having all wheel pickup on the locomotives & Tender. 2. For this to be a fair test you should have ran the BL on the same bad track as the MTH. Sorry to say bro but I think someone in this video is little biased for BL. I think the MTH detale is better for saying with the Original way the 4000s were delivered to the UP. BL is trying to Mach what 4014 today looks like. So how can you compare the tos detale. I CHOOSE MTH

    of course the mth didnt pull as many, bli locomotives have traction tires on 4wheels vs the mth that only has em on two. However the mth also comes with an extra wheelset without traction tires that you can swap out, i personally cant stand traction tires and remove them from any locomotive i can. metal wheels on metal rails just like the prototypes

    What people see in the fake smoke is beyond me. To me, much of the model experience is in the unit, itself, how it looks stationary and in motion. Add things on a layout like real water and fake smoke and it just ruins the experience. There's nothing realistic about the 'smoke' emitting from either locomotive.

      Neil Dahl your MTH just needs to be serviced grease oil. My MTH would run circles around the broadway, and sounds just like 4014 does now. The only bad thing about MTH is the drawbar that will brake while pulling a 100 car freight.
