I want a "Santa Fe" Carob tree but they don't sell them anywhere near the Bay Area. The closest nursery that carries them is like in So Cal so next time I take a trip down there I gotta bring me back a grafted Santa Fe Carob.
Dave, you probably do have a grafted Santa Fe carob tree. Although someone may have grafted seperate male and female branches from other varieties onto the same trunk. You showed that your tree has both male and female flowers and if the different flowers are both on the same branch it is a hermaphrodite, Santa Fe is one of the rare varieties that is a hermaphrodite. You are definitely lucky to have a tree with both types of flowers on it regardless of what variety it is.
I glad you saved your carob tree! Looking forward to tasting a fresh ripe carob pod. I still have one from when you bought the house... it's in my drawer and very dry. Smile
Awesome that you grow your own carob pods. You're the only person I know of who's growing this tree. I used to buy Carob powder as a chocolate substitute and it was quite expensive! And you are so blessed to be able to eat carob pods fresh straight off your own tree! And that's also one of the longest it takes from flower to harvest of ripe pods, aside from Mamey sapote that takes over a year to ripen, I think!
Dave, I thought you stood there for 7 months. Where is the dedication?!?! Well, even without that dedication, I appreciate the video. Will have to inquire about growing one where I live.
@@DevelopAwesomeSkills Did you have any luck ? Even they nurseryman at Exotica Nursery in Vista, CA expresses the difficulty he has in growing carob from cuttings. He has had some limited success though.
Hello in Mallorca island Spain is the paradise for carob trees. And i now the history of the seeds and measure the gold (quilates). But my English is very bar and i can t not explain it .
wonderful thanks.. I planted 4 of these about 14 years ago and three are males! The fourth tree still hasn't flowered so I can only hope she is a she! They are happy healthy trees... but only about 2m high in the semi tropics here in Australia.
It's crazy delicious..and all the major grocery stores are selling it now..but it's ridiculously expensive per bottle;($3-$4 each) You can get Kefir Water Grains and make this stuff yourself...Super, super simple. And you know how your product is handled by you!.. ..If you're into natural organic healthy eating..as you seem to be..you should do some research on Kefir Water.. Once you get some healthy Water Kefir grains..they should last you many years if taken care of. I would recommend that you find the live fully active grains..and not the ones that you have to dehydrate. PosyMom is who I got my first set of grains from. My grains grow at a pretty fast rate.. especially this time of year..
I was able to obtain a 1/4 cup of Water Kefir grains from a friend a while back. From there, if taken care of they will grow like crazy... then I give them to other friends. I think the story behind this is they originated from a variety of Cactus..many, many years ago. There are tons of great videos on using them on youtube.
I copied this from an Australian website ( carobsaustralia.com.au ) " In the pre-planting phase, it is necessary to decide well in advance whether to direct seed, or to obtain seedlings and then field graft them, or to do as increasing numbers of landholders are doing - purchase trees that are already grafted with known cultivars. Only Limestone Nursery in Broken Hill NSW specialises in grafted carobs (www.carobtrees.com). Some 15 varieties are available from this nursery, amongst which are 11 of the best European and American selections that were brought to Australia by Dr Henry Esbenshade in the early 1980s. " I contacted Limestone Nursery to buy their trees, unfortunately they will not ship to America. But if you are in Australia you are in luck, they ship all over Australia.
I have one big female carob and two smaller male carobs on my property. Since i can never have too many of those carob pods i would like to graft my two male trees. I know how to graft citrus and pomagranete trees but have no idea how to graft carob trees
@@charlescarabott7692 Give it a shot. Let us know how it turns out for you. One of the trickiest trees to graft is macadamia trees. With a macadamia you have to girdle the scion wood for 6 weeks prior to cutting it off so that it stores plenty of carbohydrates and sugars so it will have enough energy to survive while the cambium layers heal between the root stock and the scion.
@@DevelopAwesomeSkills although the seedlings may be similar to the mother tree they are all different. Seedlings will always be a gamble if they will be male, female or very very rarely hermaphrodite. A true Santa Fe is one of only a few hermaphrodite varieties, but I have a Santa Fe seedling and it is a male with strictly male flowers. But you can always graft onto the seedlings. I do have some carob trees that are seedlings and some that are cutting grown, and there are grafted trees available in Australia.
Interesting the vids I've seen used a standard blender..I'd have to look further to see if there is a better way. Sort of like mequite.. usually they use what is called a hammer mill to make the flour..as seed/pods are super hard.
What a great journey: from a tree with a bad comb-over to a delicious Laffy-Taffy treat. Thanks, Dave. Great video.
next time you come by Ill give you some pods... Or I can mail you some if you're not here for a while

You should save those seeds!!!
love this video. makes me want a carob tree
You should get one! Im going to try some cuttings soon so if I root one out you can have it!

Richard Mang I have not had success rooting carob cuttings yet. But the seeds sprout well!

Is carob a tropical tree? What zone do you live in? Was easy or hard for you to grow? Thank you

I enjoyed the carob-carat voice haha
Lol thanks!
Carat is the Greek word for Carob. So 24 carob seeds was the same weight as one gold coin. The coin was deemed pure if it met this measure.
Kristi Schutte that is so interesting!
Oh right on! Thank you Kristi! I knew it was something like that. Really cool to know!
I have a male carob tree :( came with the house. I wish I could graft a female limb on mine lol not sure if thats even possible!
that sounds like a great experiment!

I think you might have sold me on a carob tree. Food and a nitrogen fixer.
It is a great tree! and once established they do grow fast

Forage Forage do you know the best way to powder them? Bc the seeds are so hard may break a blender blade? Thought?
