IM ALMOST IN TEARS. I LOVED THE PUNTERS. LIVED CLOSE AND PLAYED THERE A FEW TIMES. OPENED FOR AUGIE MARCH AFTER THEY OPENED FOR US. GREAT MEMS. 1ST POWDERFINGER SHOW, MY GIRL FAINTS 2ND SONG. LOL. YEAH IT WAS OUR LOCAL ALSO. Thanks for these. My bands never hit but we played 3 nights a week just loving it. Tote, ESPY, THE BRIDGE etc were the venues u wanted on ur musical and life CV. TA. peace
When I moved down to Melbourne in the mid 90's this was THE band venue! Much is made about the Tote being iconic but to me this was the quintessential venue! When you think of the term 'Sticky Carpet' to vision the indie band pub, then this was the poster child! With fairly low roofs, at least the front bar, it was always smoke filled. I was a non-smoker but I loved the atmosphere it created. Good times! I had a studio at Roar Studios down the road. Brunswick St was grungy and dangerous - but cool!
@@Gioia67 I lived in Sydney too until I moved to Melb - the Hopetoun, the Annandale Hotel, the Lansdowne, I remember them all! I'm planning to make a miniature version of the Punters Club, your video was a big inspiration - thanks again.
Cool video, played there in 87 and 88 in the Romeos and the Reckers. I fell off my drum stool backwards, drunk, through the black curtains and off the stage. Another band and another venue about ten years later, that ended up having to give it up due to one Ay hole in the side street complaining about noise. That was the Greyhound hotel in St. Kilda, it was completely demolished so at least it didn't become a pokies venue. Keep up your good work.
We (Dogsday) launched our first CD there in 1997, with The Shindiggers and a really good band called The Fezmen, who wore, you guessed it, fezzes. Richard gave our CD a really good review in The Form Guide, but alas, stardom was not on our cards!
I did work placement there in 1991 as part of a hospitality course. My fellow students were given placements in restaurants, cafés, etc, but my teacher knew I was more suited to The Punters Club. She kept it a secret and I was chuffed when she told me. Joe's Garage was nearby.
The Evelyn! What an amazing venue.

It does like a great venue similar to the Hopetoun in Surry Hills 👍👍😀
At least The Tote is still there. So many of the iconic venues of the 80s and 90s are no longer with us.
Thank you, that was a fantastic trip down memory lane.
You're welcome 😊...I never really knew about it as I lived in Sydney but did my best. My brother is great at the editing part 👌👍

Thank you ✌️ ✌️✌️🤩
One of my favourite live music venues. I think I saw Intoxica there, they were so freaking loud! Good times.
I saw them there too
Not just interstate bands but occasionally internationals as well. I distinctly remember seeing Madball there but probably saw others.

Sadly I only knew it after the fact in 2005 when it was a DJ Bar venue called Bimbo Deluxe (with the baby). Great video.
Just the other day, I asked myself, "what happened to the Punters Club?"..... then this video popped up. They were good times back then.
Lol google listening all the time. Glad u enjoyed 😉 ☺️
Nice trip Gioia 🤘
Thank you 👌 😊

Great story. Thanks for sharing 👍👍
It opened again September 2024
1. It was the front bar where it all really happened. 2. Noise was not a problem, the huge jack up in rent was.
Worst part pf playing Punters was parking your car in a hurry after load out and trying to find it at the end of the night in those samey streets.
😂😂
Janelle booked in conjunction with Rich and Eva
Thanks👌✌️
