Hiro, Sure miss seeing you at the shop but your successors are doing a great job. Keep up the good work with your gardening and best wishes to you and your family. Hoping for a speedy and complete recovery.
Hiro-san, thank you for this guide! I feel much better about growing daikon for the first time. The way you cooked the leaves looks delicious, I can’t wait to try it :)
This man is awesome. Even when he doesn't speak English well, he still does a great job. Even trying to make some jokes. We need more videos like this. Good job sir!
Looks so delicious!! I learned alot of new things from your video!! My seedlings are doing great so far I just hope they grow great once I transfer them! My neighbor told me you can soak banana peels overnight in a bucket of water and use that to water the garden! I’m sure the daikon would love it since it’s have potassium!
Hi, Hiro! Love your daikon garden, and how you prepared it!! Oishi! 😋 Are you doing PT? Maybe one day, you can vlog on that? Gardening is so therapitic! 🌱👍🏾
Dear Hiro, Thank you. I just planted my Daikon seeds but I put them in the soil direct. I didn't know you can eat the leaves too so I'm looking forward to that. By the way, did you know that you can have Scalp Acupuncture for stroke related problems. I've been watching Dr Jason Hao and Dr Zhu videos on RUclips. Please investigate and keep on gardening in the meantime xxx
Discovered daikon radish to make 'carrot cake' with it. Now we're hooked! I am attempting to grow it myself now. Didn't know the leaves were also good for you. Thank for that!
Oooh, that is impressive foliage! And so bright! I am going to grow daikon in some weeks from now, just waiting for the seeds to arrive. I am getting 5 gallon pots to have indoors. Really looking forward to it, daikon costs quite a lot here.
Kon'nichiwa Hiro and helpers.. My husband and his mother loves diakon and I finally found some seedlings here in Australia.. and planted them nearly couple months ago. Thought best to learn when to harvest.. I saw this video and wow I learnt alot. Huge thank you.. I particularly love that you went from showing seeds, to planting to harvesting and cooking them.. which was my next research what to do with the harvest, but you got me covered. I will definitely give your recipes a try.. I think I will be harvesting soon but I believe I have more leaves than roots, as I have been throwing lots of egg shells down and I think they have nitrogen. I did add some banana skins couple of times.. so fingers crossed.. (very happy, thank you for sharing!) Kyō wa, kyōyū shite kurete arigatō
@@gardeningwithhiro865 awe it is, lovely that you ask, thank you.. so far has been mixed results - 1st started late, growing towards middle of winter and compared to Japan. Here is pretty warm also, I did not start with seeds. What I thought was 1 seedling has turned out to be a bunch of seedlings together that has now grown into a number of twisted diakon's growing. I pull up a few to try and give some of the others a chance but they were tiny. The leaves did not bend down as you mentioned so I thought, I would leave them for longer but they started to go to flowers and I figured if I don't get any diakon this year, that maybe if I grow seeds and sow them next winter my husband and his mother will have plenty next year. I have loved seeing them grow at each stage. The flowers are stunning, I can see why they are in many artworks/fabric patterns (I have studied Japanese Art and is a huge interest in my life), I love that I can create my own art works inspired by these beautiful plants. Today I pulled one and after washing it, I tried to cut it and it is very hard, woody like. I a wonder did I leave it too late? or not enough water? I am unsure why.. could be that my knives are blunter than I thought, I did try sharpening them, that too could be done wrong.. I will try again with the other few I have left.. The seeds are not yet right, mind you the heads have now fallen over from all the weight and I worry that I should pull them out and still have no seeds. The pods are still green and not very big. I hope for at least a few seeds. Hope you and your family are well?
Thank you sir for your wisdom. After searching hundreds of videos you were able to give me the info. I needed. My only complaint is I couldn't see a recipe.
Thank you for the wonderful video! 🥰 Looking forward to seeing all the things you plant! Im going to plant daikon soon hopefully I have a good harvest :) I also love your cooking hat! Haha 💩 couldn’t stop smiling this whole video ❤️ Hello to your cameraman and family too! Good job 👏🏻
arigatoo gozaimasu hiro sensei, appreciate very much your sharing! i love daikon and have large garden in upper Midwest USA where it is lucky to have any Spring, however, this year perhaps we can have Spring (instead of sudden Summer). I agree the 5 gallon bucket might be too crowded with the daikon. I will give it a try in my own 5 gal buckets on my sunny deck, before our garden is thawed. I will also try in the garden, and even if not much roots, the greens are delicious! Ganbatte Kudasai!
Hi Hiro, I just found you & subbed. This is my 2nd time growing daikon - the 1st wasn't successful -- too much water as pot was under a leaky evestroughing & we had much rain. In Sept. 2021, mine (I think only 3 germinated) now have huge leaves and the daikon are showing from the soil. They are blocking the sun for my beets in the next row (I grow in raised beds due to back injuries). I am very happy to know the greens are edible. I think I will try & pull one & eat it, as I am worried it will become woody if I wait too long. Domo arigato, and I do hope you are recovering well/still. I myself was thrown (pitched) head-first down a 2-decker bus stairwell on my way home from my uni lecturing job in Hong Kong, & then suffered many more injuries due to blacking out on the medications the doctor put me on back home here in Canada (at least 4 more sequential concussions, with at least 5-6 skull fractures + MANY broken ribs), so I understand both the physical & cognitive difficulties of recovering from injuries. Again, thank you, and ALL BEST WISHES!! (PS - we viewers would love to have your recipes written out, if your son could do that for us. Thanks!!)
Thank you Grant for the nice message. I've had more success with Daikon growing in late summer into the the fall and winter. The daikon grew huge by December / January! Very interesting.
Great video💚 do you think the daikon roots would have grown bigger if there had been fewer of them in the pot. I really want to grow my own daikon to make kimchi. I hadn’t realised that you can use the leaves as well Thanks for the great recipe, will definitely be having a go at this.
I think you left too little space for them and also maybe the weather is too sunny for it. Your daikon is growing fantastic leaves but not enough root, which also could mean that there's not enough potassium. I recommend mixing some ash (from burning old leaves and branches) into your soil before you plant it.
I agree...fitting 20 or so daikon into something like a 10 gallon bucket...doesn't take a genius to figure out they can't grow to the sizes you find in the shops.
Ohhhhh I am going to grow these inside. But my indoor garden is about 50% humidity and I keep it 70 degrees. These might not do so well in that condition.
I tried to grow daikon but ended with specimens as big... as a pencil! 😭 I suspect what went wrong was the 99% peat moss, little to no fertilizer and too much agastache seedlings growing inside the bucket. I will retry this fall (in the same inexpensive home-made self-watering bucket) with a better potting mix (50% garden soil, 25% peat moss, 25% compost) and weekly low-strength commercial fertilizer 24-8-16. 2023-06-30
Facts: everything tastes better with Asian condiments! Thanks for showing us how you grow your daikon. I hope you know Jesus Christ and let him into your heart. He will change your life and your eternity
This is the funniest gardening video I’ve ever seen. You’re my hero Hairo.
🤣Same here. Too funny.
I love Hiro-san’s sense of humor! So glad I found you on RUclips!

Thank you for the guidance Hiro. I used it to plant my first Daikon seeds in my raised garden bed today. Looking forward to the harvest!

Lol he speaks better English than I do Japanese and he's funny as heck too!
I grew some as big as my arm this fall - I did not know what to do with them and they were composted - but now I do - thanks for the recipe 😊
I got some bigger ones in December! We made soup with the radish root.
Where did you find the recipe?

Loved this video... probably the best out of all the how to grow daikon radish that I binged on.
I loved this! I’m gonna try this myself. If you plant only 5 seeds in the bucket I think they will be bigger
Hiro is the bomb! Great video ☺️
Thanks Mr. Cat!

Wonderful video Hiro. Full video watched and enjoyed seeing how you prepared the radish and leaves for eating. Take care, from Laura in Ont Canada
Great Editing.
Great video Hiro! Any chance you can share the recipe you used for both the leaves and the root? It was a bit too fast to follow.

This is a great channel. Most videos only talk you show start middle and end and eat. Great attitude and fun too. Hope to see more. Subbed.

realy thanks for the very informative video
Great video - thank you!
Thanks now I know the whole thing is edible I'm going to plant them soon as I'm able.
My wife is Japanese and doesn't think I can grow these Daikon radishes. Gonna prove her wrong.
I started a new batch around mid august and they are still in the ground. Much bigger this time! They seem to really enjoy cooler weather
Did you?
@@yamanmustafa7574 that’s what I wanna know too lol
Nice. From my experience on radish the root seems to grow bigger when they are spaced apart but the top will grow great!
The dish you made with the leave looks delicious 😋 is that Bonito flakes on top and shredded fried tofu
I really enjoyed this video.

This is wonderful! Thank you so much. Mine came out that size too. I also think too much nitrogen. Sigh.. time to replant!
I’m going to try for a fall crop!
Can you make tsukemono with the daikon leaves?
Thank you

I used a local nursery compost soil for raised beds. It was one of those easy carry bags that had 2 cu ft soil.
