Swayman's Strong Stand: Should the Bruins say yay or nay to (reported) $10M ask?

  • With only a few days remaining in August, the Jeremy Swayman contract saga drags on. There was a report earlier this week that's he asking for $10M annually on his deal, and while that's yet to be corroborated, recent comments made by the goaltender suggest he is indeed taking a strong stand in negotiations.
    Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren breaks down Swayman's understanding that the cap is going up, his comparables, and how he can't ruin the goalie market for other guys that are going to be in his shoes down the line.
    Looking at his numbers, Swayman is an elite goalie. But, he doesn't have the accolades of some of his peers. The balance is paying for what's expected vs. what's been achieved. At Swayman's age, though, surely the hardware is coming.
    Plus, some comments on Andrew Raycroft's take on the challenge ahead for Swayman as the bona fide No. 1 in Boston.

      He had a great playoff performance, but has yet to be the starter for a full regular season. I wouldnt seriously consider to give him 10 just because of that

    If he wants ten million it’s time for a trade. If he had a cup or vezina we could at least have that conversation. Paying guys before they actually do something is bad business.

    Trade him for Ullmark if he doesn't sign by camp. I thought 7 was high for this but seems to be the going price. 10 or even 8.5 is silly for an unproven.

    It’s not Swayman’s fault that the team couldn’t generate any offense across long stretches of playoff games, dude was goddamn nails. In my book, he’s got two cups if the team could put pucks in the net. Let’s not also forget he was in net when the B’s posted the best regular season record all time. Give him what he wants, any other team out there will pay him 8.5-9 no questions asked and he’s a RFA. And they traded Linus away, swayman’s younger. We gonna start Joonas next year? FFS why is this even a discussion. It’s like the redsox ownership bought the bruins when we weren’t looking.

    Stop over valuating Swayman. hasn't been the number one goalie for the team yet.

    So sick of all this swayman talk. I said 3 months ago that all he's done so far is get hot for 1.5 rounds of playoffs while winning only 1 round, and that the 8x8 talk was ridiculous. He's lucky the B's didnt opt for 2 yrs of last year's arbitration result as a showing of good faith. Yes, he watched Ullmark (still the consistently better goaltender) get traded, but B's did that to have the money & cap space to pay Swayman. Who cares about his studying business - you can have an MBA and still never get hired to be an agent but if you're a star veteran player, you can negotiate your own contract

    Pred here. Saros got 7.74M/8. I still think that is at least .74M too much. Sway is still not dry behind his ears compared to Saros. If he asks for 10M- I’d say trade him. No goalie is worth it, not even Price was

    • @DiedonSunday
      @DiedonSunday 16 дней назад +1

      Agreed on Price, as a Habs fan I hated the deal as much as I loved the player. What do you think Swayman’s value would be on the trade market, knowing his demands and how little cap space there is around and how few jobs are still available?

    • @erikhalvorseth3950
      @erikhalvorseth3950 16 дней назад

      @@DiedonSunday I misread you at first.
      Trade value at the market..thats a tough one.
      Most teams now are up against the cap,
      for the most part they want to reduce the hit.
      Cant see him get 10M anywhere, tbh.
      If he is to get that kind of $ a monster trade
      has to go down. Only teams like Utah are close to having as much as 10M space.
      Cant see a reason why a team like that would spend that much $ on a goalie.
      Maybe he can get 8 somewhere in a deal that involves a bluechip going the other way

    • @DiedonSunday
      @DiedonSunday 16 дней назад +1

      @@erikhalvorseth3950 Interesting take. Thanks for a reasonable and thoughtful response. I disagree about the return because of the cap hit however, as very few teams seem willing to spend that amount on goaltending at the moment. For this reason I believe the Bruins actually hold most of the cards here. Any offer sheet between 6.87 to 9.16 would return a 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounder plus not using all that cap room on a goalie, which i believe would already be an excellent return. They could then make another move to acquire a goalie. So I wouldn’t worry too much about his demands because the market doesn’t bear it out. I would be more worried about giving out too many years to a goalie. I’ve seen how that turns out way too often as recently only 2 high priced goalie contracts have really worked out (Bob and Vasilevsky).

      @@DiedonSunday Notwithstanding pics and prospects, a substantional amount of $ need to be moved around. I agree with you, Boston
      dont negotiate out of weakness, albeit in retrospect, they seem to have been taken somewhat on the wrong foot after chipping Ullmark away. Looks like they thought this deal would be easier. Last 10+ years Boston
      have managed to sell in to the players to leave some $ on the table to build a good team around the bluechips. Although Chara and
      Bergeron, Krejici etc etc are gone now, guys
      like Marchand are still around on very friendly contracts. That will still be an argument. 8+ up on the capspace- I still
      cant see any reason to give a goalie 10+.
      IMO The Rangers goalie is clearly overpaid,
      Hellebuyck..lets see how that contract ages from now. Goalies get injured all the time with the modern play, the work between the pipes is teamwork as everything else regarding hockey.
      As a Pred fan - I'd seriously consider Lankinen if I was pretty much any GM in need of an 1a/1b goalie. Very likeable guy,
      was not bad in Chicago behind an abysmal team, great tandem with Saros. Kevin was actually better than Juuse before christmas at stretches. Offer him in the area of 3M/2years and you get a great guy, still young, has seen his part of rubber and bad defence allready.
      Beats me why he is still UFA. He wants a bit of $ but an underrated guy
