This is the number 1 skill I focus on with my son for years and now as a coach for u8. I will add the detail ‘walk around showing numbers instead of standing in one place’. It will help because two weeks ago my son and I were working on scanning with head on swivel as he skated with puck now this gives an actual drill..thx!!
back in the day I use to learn "blind" stickhandling by having a carton disc around my neck - was very effective - can you still find something like that in shops these days? cheers, Remy
Best thing I've been taught from Bernie Cassell is lead with the stick. Another coach taught me the strategy of placing the puck under the heel of my stick with my hand down, then start stickhandling between the skates. Either way, a good foundation is needed to coordinate with the upper body with the lower.
Good advice for you. Push the puck to within sticks length. Let that puck lead you. A good drill to do that with is a dump in drill. Dump the puck in, check your blind side for pressure and then curl around the puck so it leads you.
Great video as always. Would you recommend doing these drills with an off-ice puck (green biscuit or similar) or with a stick handling ball? Or does it even matter?

Either of these things will do it
Good video! Even Johnny Gaudreau says that because of his size
Exactly!
With this, do you have any tips on improving speed and agility while keeping your head up with the puck?
Yes, practice that! Go through drills where you are moving your feet and keeping your head up handling the puck. Figure 8 for example.
Keeping your head up will also keep you from getting your head taken off too like I did tonight 😂
Thank you
You are welcome.
Awesome
You're awesome!
thanks
No thank you.
