Without going through all those steps this might be easier:
Go to messenger there it will have at the top will be messages, active, groups and calls. Go to groups, then don't click on the conversation. Hold your finger on it and a screen will pop up now click on more. At the very top it will say leave group touch that a window will pop up and there is a leave button. Click on that should leave group.

How to do that permenantly
If you mean that you don't want people to chat with you, I think you'd want to block those people. I'm not sure if you can only block someone for chat or not.

Great question. I honestly don't know. I don't think I've ever had anyone leave a group, lol. Hopefully someone who sees this and knows the answer chimes in.
Yes, a message appears that states that you have left the chat.
