Are Corsair trimarans really made for offshore sailing ?

  • We sailed a brand new Corsair 37 from Tahiti to Tikehau, straight after commissioning her. Big question was how would a trimaran handle the trip ? It's a 175 nautical miles journey upwind right in the rainy season (meaning big squalls all night) before we reach the calm turquoise waters inside the lagoon. Not only did she sail very fast but she proved very stable, super easy to manage and with enough room inside to welcome 5 people for a night at sea. Amazingly enough we did not break anything which normally never happens on a new boat! She is also super cool to steer. We tried the autopilot but quickly went back to manual steering as it was so thrilling. Definitely a big winner, that I would not be scared to sail across oceans while delivering top performance and pleasure.

    I got a 36 ft steel Hull & added 2 wooden catamaran hulls each side. Strong yacht & sailing faster then a steel boat. Very cheap construction . This monster can go anywhere.

    Translation for the previous comment: “And how would she do in 40 knots of wind?”

    • @yarryrob
      @yarryrob 3 года назад +4

      And their answer was along the lines of alright but best to reduce the size of the sails earlier. Boat was ok with some 40 knot squalls and kept sailing at 7 knots.

    mais dans 40 noeuds ça donne quoi?

    • @SAILTAHITI
      @SAILTAHITI  4 года назад +6

      Il faut réduire la voilure suffisamment tot car un trimaran pardonne moins l erreur qu un monocoque mais on ne ralentit pas beaucoup pour autant. En fin de nuit on a eu un grain a 40 noeuds, on a juste affalé la GV par prudence car on était dans le noir et sous foc seul on marchait a plus de 7 noeuds au prés. De jour on aurait gardé la GV avec 2 ris mais il faut pouvoir surveiller l étrave sous le vent.

    How does the 2006 model compare to this model. As it would be the only one I can afford and looks liveable. I'm willing to compromise comfort for speed so that's why I want a trimaran

      The Corsair 37 has the classic Corsair design, they have upgraded the interior over the years but the general shape has not changed too much. The newest models (600, 760, 880) have inverted bows and more volume in the floats which don't really add much to the performance but give greater stability (you can reef a bit later). I hope it helps you ! Let me know if you want to discuss more

      The new boats are apparently good just keep away from the first of C36 Corsairs, they had issues with bulkheads blowing out and masts busting.

      hi Jeff, lately we sailed the Corsair 37 from Tahiti to Tikehau again, this time straight upwind, with 3 meters swell coming from the back and 1.5 meter wind chop coming from the north, making very steep waves. It was uncomfortable but we felt completely safe

      I have not see a video either. But I know it handles well on those waves. I’ll pull out my gopro next time I’m in high seas.

    A barrel with a small sail can sail offshore. The real question is can a Corsair sail offshore with creature comforts instead of just bare essentials which leaves you miserable. The answer is no. Unless, you want to pretend this is the 1800s and not the current technical age of refinements we now live in. Wish someone made an affordable trimaran that could offshore sail with modern conveniences aboard. Most manufactures are still producing vessels as though it were the 1820s when it comes to conveniences. Stuck in the passed.

    • @TheKaptainkraig

      I think a 50-foot version of the Corsair would solve that problem. I would keep a smaller rig on it to make it easy to handle and I don't think a smaller rig would affect performance that much either!
