I get why Sophie didn't want to lose her position and risk being poor again, but couldn't she tell Kate. Straight, gay, bi people choose their jobs over love every day. Hell after graduation they could have gotten back together. But that would be a different storyline.
It honestly wouldn't have changed anything sophie would still have went to get a career in the military and Kate would still have left. The reason why Kate and sophie couldn't have gotten together after graduation was because she wasn't thinking about how this would affect sophie in general but that's just me.
