Personally, I am a machete guy. Nothing beats them for heavy foliage. I use them all the time in my yard. In a pinch, they are fantastic for H2H. Now, my personal preference for "survival" is also a machete, but a heavy machete specifically the Blind Horse Knives Survival machete which is the finest cutting implement ever devised. Sadly no longer made. But I have three of them, or is it four, LOL.
Swamps in the southern states are brutal. I have an old Cold Steel cutlass and I had it at deer camp. I took a hog and I forgot my bonesaw so I used that cutlass to remove the head after cutting all the meat off the neck. Took two hard swings on bare bone it did have some small chips from it. Yes that D guard can get your hand sometimes. Overall I like it and still use it.
I have a few machetes, and use them, but mostly for yardwork. I'll occasionally use one out camping, but it rarely leaves the car. Just personal preference, though, and not too many vines in my part of The Rockies. I prefer an axe and a 4.5-6" knife. (There's a saw in the car too, in case it's the best option, just like the exercise of using the axe, it stretches out my back. (No Diddy)
I loved you intro in the beginning of this video Scab. You looked like a Samurai Warrior swinging to blades in the jungle. This was a great video and I hope you do more Cold Steel comparisons soon.
I'm in the SW MO Ozarks and constantly use machetes and axes. I've owned most of the Cold Steel machetes and have used them all a lot. I mostly use them on wild roses and weeds but there are a couple I like for limbing trees I fall. About 7 years ago while on a state sponsored vacation their CI and her allies robbed my house and made off with hundreds of blades including my machete collection. I've replaced many of them but won't be replacing the kantana. I did replace the cutless as its a fine weapon to use against my enemies the roses. Perhaps the new kantana machetes are different but the old ones were too heavy to be actually used very well as machetes at their length. At the same time they aren't very effective choppers either. Their short cleaver like machetes called the Heavy machete are imo one of the best chopping machetes made for using on wood. Their Kukri machetes cut good but are too short for the kinda work I do but I do keep one on one of my spare bugout bags because for that application I think they'd be pretty effective dual use blades. My two favorite Cold Steel machetes aren't actually that great for machetes but are great fun. I like the Chinese War Sword machete because it's a great oversized chopper capable of extra deep cuts. They are more sword like imo. My favorite by far is their Gladius machete. I think it's the best close contact self-defense tools made. It has an impressive thrust ability and it's also a monster when it comes to cutting. It's light and compact enough to be used inside and it's fast. It's still pretty good for wood and clearing trails as well. I also like Ontario's machetes but they are a little heavy for the kinds of work I typically use machetes for except for limbing. They are fun to modify. I made a nice bowie out of the 12" D guard machete. It's a wicked self- defense tool and still functions well as a short machete.
That is awesome man! The Chinese war sword machete is my all-time favorite. It is a heavy hitter.. I need to do another video on it soon! I appreciate the time you put in to this comment!
Damn, Scab! That's quite the workout in the heat and humidity. Definitely not a climate I could operate well within. 😄 Great video. Best testing ground imaginable.
A machete is a specialty tool that should be in everybody's toolbox. Great for rough work clearing Vines and if you do Nick them up they're easy to fix. I've got the two-handed all-terrain Chopper by Cold Steel👍

Yep I gotta get me that cutlass for them damn vines that are always at work trying to eat my yard, my house, my dog, and my whole family!! Good stuff as always brother 👊🏻
I actually prefer the newer Chinese CS machetes. They come much sharper from the factory and edge retention seems better. The SA ones are tougher but I just use machetes for cutting shit in my backyard.
You're looking really good. I lost 60 pounds a few years ago and I have put about 40 of it back on, so I know how hard it is to lose weight and keep it off. I haven't used machetes much where I live, but that was some serious action.
while I am more of a fighting sword kinda guy but I gotta go with the cutlass. Cutlass by themselves were made to cut rope and be used as a tool on a boat deck by sailors just like a machete is used for a forest.
Great video, Brother. These are very impressive machetes. I was also impressed with how well you used both hands not many of us are ambidextrous. I'm Sorry for the loss of your friend and brother. I have lost the three best friends I have ever had. They all died way to young. The pain never really goes away you just get used to it, but you have to deal with the loss. Sometimes it's harder than other times but stay strong brother. Thoughts and prayers my friend.

Hey Scab, you might consider going to the nearest university that has an Exercise Science department before you lose anymore weight. They can do your bodyfat through hydrostatic weighing which is the gold standard although Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry might be more accurate. If you get someone who is a good tester you could do the skinfold test. Lange Skinfold Calipers or Harpenden Skinfold Calipers are preferred.
Northern Kentucky I use a machete lot going fishing along the Ohio River and up the creeks they are life savers before you put tape on the hand of the katana a angel grinder makes short work of the stupid plastic nubs and makes it 100%better
Brother, I like you more everyday. My whole family is or were fire, police or military. My son is airforce. Me, I'm just a simple man trying to make his way.
