  • I had some head gasket and cylinder head problems with my 97' N14. This engine has about 900'000 miles on it since the last rebuild, the block has probably closer to 2 million+ miles on it so I'm pretty happy with the head gasket life. except for injectors at about 800'000 miles and some oil leaks is has been basically trouble free!

    That's a nice designed engine. The heads is separated in three. Save money

    I really like the triple head design.....one man could do an in-frame without a lifting device. 😎👍

    When you un torque and retorque the center head, you move the block from the loading of the deck and disturb the adjacent cylinder’s current firing ring’s seal. It it best to do them all and torque the heads starting with the center head, and add a very light film of silicone around the water passages on the deck.

    I think the reason the #4 cylinder was a little cleaner than the others is because the injector cup on that cylinder was most likely leaking some coolant and only became severe when that head was resurfaced and reinstalled.

    Cummins Reconditioned Heads are Highly Problematic!! I had the same issue. And several Injector failures. Gotta wonder about Cummins recondition quality control. Very Expensive and that's not, taking into account Downtime and lost Revenue

    I got the same engine. And same problem. So how expence it is to change the head seal?

  • @EZNowTrucker
    @EZNowTrucker 5 лет назад +4

    These are tough engines. Most of the problems I know of the heads going or similar issues is when operators put too much load on the engine when it's cold.

      Roger1 333 they don’t warm it up
      Before they roll or ?

    • @EZNowTrucker
      @EZNowTrucker 5 лет назад +3

      @@ronnies379peterbiltexperie2 basically yes. Atleast what I've seen. 15w40 gets super thick when cold. I've seen guys put the fuel pedal to the floor then start it and hold it there so the engine doesnt stall out. I'm not saying every head issue with a N14 is caused by not warming up the engine properly but a high number I would say are from just what i witnessed.

    Hi, please give your opinion: i found 99 Volvo n14 esp, with low mileage, don't now if it's reliable. Becouse of year. Planning to do some local work 250 miles radius

    • @PFTW
      @PFTW  5 лет назад +2

      I'm not a big fan of volvos or the ESP ratings, (I may not be familiar with all of them) but I don't see any reason why it would be unreliable. whether it has a '98 or '99 engine I wouldn't be worried.

    Hey i have a 2007 isx and it has blowby..i know it needs new piston rings, but my question is....can i just replace the rings and head gasket without having to do a full rebuild? Or is the rebuild might as well be necessary

    • @PFTW
      @PFTW  6 лет назад +1

      Sorry I didn't see your comment earlier. My opinion would be if you have it apart to just do an overhaul, but there might be a situation where I would just replace the rings. Did you check the blowby pressure? How much oil is it burning?

  • @bradleythomas6326

    check your liner protrusion

    • @PFTW
      @PFTW  6 лет назад +1

      I'm sure the liner protrusion is below spec. when the time is right I'm going to pull the block, get it resurfaced, cut the counter bores and the whole nine yards.

    • @PFTW

      Было много проблем, сначала прокладка головки, затем плохая чаша инжектора, затем плохая восстановленная головка. (Translated from) "There were many problems, first a head gasket, then a bad injector cup, then a bad remanufactured head"

    I have n 01 fld with a n14 hard starting ..
    any ideas on changing the pump screen ..you know the one under the screw driver head on the pump?
    could i have a weak fuel pump?...i have to shoot it with ether to start it
    also changed the chk valve by the ecm

    • @PFTW
      @PFTW  5 лет назад

      Someone I know had an N14 with a similar problem, the pump could not deliver enough fuel at cranking RPM to start the engine, so a little ether to get the RPMs up and it would run, A new fuel pump fixed the problem. If you think it might be the screen, I would simply remove the screen and the other bits, reinstall the cap and see if it makes a difference.

    There's a shim available by cummins as a fix if your liner protrusion is under spec, you install it on top of liner right before the head gasket.

    • @prevost8686

      It’s a band-aid to cover an issue that needs to be corrected . Cat remains use that junk and some of their remans don’t last 100K miles.

    Oil comes from under the first head under load and temperature after 190F. Two weeks ago I changed the gasket and put new bolts, but the problem did not go away. What can happen? Thank You!

    Your block deck must not be flat true, so it is not meshing even with heads
