Strictly speaking, 'oe' is not a diphthong. :) It represents the sound /u/, which is one sound - and not one vowel gliding/sliding into another. In fact, in most other European languages 'oe' is even spelt 'u'. :)

Correct :) Hm, I'm hesitating to put the video down now...

Thanks for the lesson. I believe you that there are major differences. UIT pronounced just like English "out". HIJ pronounced like English "high". Can you tell me where my pronunciations come from. I'm focusing on proper pronunciation as I feel that is the best intro to any language. I just want to be understood.

Honestly, I can't. It's so different in the different regions. The only tip I can give you, is to mimic how the people around you pronounce their diphthongs.

You mentioned diphtongs being pronounced different in varying regions. If I spoke to a Flanders Belgian in my sketchy beginner-level Nederlands, are they going to understand me effortlessly?

Hi, it depends on more factors than just the diphthongs. They might hear some Belgian accent as your Dutch is getting better, and they will understand you more and more.

@@LearnDutchwithAlain Niets aan de hand, op zich is jouw uitspraak gewoon standard Nederlands, een eeuw geleden sprak men in Nederland die tweeklanken uit net zoals jij. Laatste decennia neigt men echter naar ‘aai’ voor ‘ei’ in het woord blijf bijvoorbeeld.
      Verschijnsel Poldernederlands.
