I know you’d recognize mine right away- not only as it is a unique and beautiful hoffmeister - you also wonderfully put your makers mark in ‘easter egg’ places on the violin - fantastic work of art
Always love your content, Olaf. They give me hope and comfort in a troubled world!
That southern germany violin is very beautiful! 😀
I love your take, on the, clueless,
Homer Simpson/deer in headlights stare. 👍👍 😁✌🖖
A bit like a violin teacher can tell which of their students are playing before they even walk into the room. Would love you to do a video about the history of neck lengths and angles & whether it's worth getting work done on old violins to reset the neck to a more modern design, it's an area I would love to learn more about x
You have perfected the 'Craig Ferguson awkward pause'. 😅
Hi Olaf. The violin you showcased at around 2:00 looks like a twin of my violin. You said it was made in Mirecourt, France about 100 years ago. My violin was made by Leon Bernardel in Mirecourt 95 years ago (1930). By any chance, was the violin you showed made in Bernardel's shop?
I think Stradivari models have higher arching, while Guarneri models are rather flat. My violin has a rather flat arching, and my violin maker said he used his model mixed with Guaneri.

Olaf the violin.................maker
A bit like a doctor who knows the ailments but not the patient...
I had to tell my doctor, "When I ask a question, I
expect an answer. A straight answer." 😁✌🖖
Olaf, have any players ever spoken with you about vegan violins?
There is one violin maker (Padraig ó Dubhlaoidh) from Ireland who markets vegan violins. They aren't cheap and even if you bought one, trying to reduce your harm to animals, the first time a local luthier opened it they would of course use hide glue to close it again.
I have not seen Padraig share any of his techniques, glues etc. I would have thought that someone who truly wanted to reduce animal suffering WOULD have shared his learnings with other makers. I am not aware that he has. Maybe there is a secret Luthiernet where you all discuss this stuff that I am not aware of. :-)
I also get that even if a luthier like yourself came to the belief/understanding that animal cruelty was wrong and wanted to remove or reduce it, it would be incredibly difficult to choose to use non-traditional glues on some of the expensive and valuable instruments you are asked to repair.
I just wish that players like my little boy (11) who loves playing his violin and loves music had better options to buy instruments that have been built and repaired in ways that reduce or remove harm to animals.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this if you have any.
It sounds more like he just doesn't like working with
hide glue and is looking for an excuse to avoid it and
those who would be upset, by his not using it (the purists).
The idea of avoiding hide glue, to reduce animal harm,
is ridiculous. The hides used for glue and leather come
from animals slaughtered for meat, not their hides.
Simply disposing of the hides would be both insulting and
disrespectful, to the animals. If you are going to slaughter
an animal (for whatever reason) every bit should be used. 😁✌🖖
