Hi Lucy! Just realised I haven't seen a video from you for a while, so wanted to leave a message saying I hope you're doing really well and motoring through that PhD!

Interesting. In Finland a major part of humanities PhD work is an ongoing seminar. Everyone submits one piece of writing (15-25 pages) per term which is read by other students and discussed in a seminar session. This helps learning relevant academic writing and gives feedback in general.

Yeah I think most countries do from talking to PhDs in other countries! It’s seems the U.K. is the odd one out doing no modules/seminars for PhD students 😊

Hi! Thank you for this video! I just found out that I have been accepted to start a PhD in History in Jan. I know that this is what I want to do but it just all started to feel REAL and SCARY and this made me feel SO much better! Thank you!

hiya! no don't worry it is not a problem I think I was a bit nervous at the time I posted that comment. It's been going well (you are absolutely right about the admin side of things!) I have also taken your advice about joining societies and I am now a member of PGR soc. It's still a bit weird at the moment, with some things being online, but we have "virtual offices" three times a week where we meet, chat, support each other and get on with any work that we have. It's really helping me structure my week. Thank you for the advice given in this video and others on your channel!

can you please make a video on editing/creating/and maintaining a bibliography using latex?

    • @LucyHargrave

I'm afraid I've never used a software called latex... I use a software called Zotero for my bibliography

Hi there. I'm considering a PhD in Applied Linguistics from UOB. Thanks for the info...Also, what is the piano jazz song at 1:00??? I've been trying to find it for YEARS. Thanks :)

Hello! Sorry for taking so long to reply! Been a very busy few months. So the jazz song I'm pretty sure was just one I found in iMovie... Think it was called Sunday Stroll or Piano Ballad, I've changed laptops since so don't have the raw footage anymore so can't check for certain, sorry 🙈

It’s a very short clip, but it sounds to me like a song called ‘I’ve never been in love before.’ I’m a jazz musician by the way. 😊

    Hi Lucy.
I’m a Masters student at UOB, studying Literature and Culture MA, part time.
I’m in second year and having to take a Leave of Absence because of depression until the following September. What would you advise I do during this time?
    P. S. - what evidence would you suggest I use for the leave of absence. I am a student at UoB so I think it should be similar for you as it will be for me?

      Hello,
Honestly the best thing you can do during a LOA (espeically one taken for mental health reasons) is focus on you. Use this time recharge and reconnect with yourself - watch your favourite shows, go on long walks, hang out with friends and family. Whatever YOU want to do! I used mine to go to therapy and focus on my new puppy :)
In terms of evidence I got a letter from my doctor as evidence.

@@LucyHargrave thank you Lucy! Yes, I will be using mine for therapy too. I will take your advice on board, thank you so much for reaching out x
