    If it were me I would have a backup tank to avoid getting caught short, and lots of spare water. And have it partitioned off from the shower, that said it’s a very compact toilet that should do the job perfectly.

    Enjoying your build. Two comments about the Toilet. Panther RV products has a shower pan that is compatible for the Thetford so you don't have to shim it up..... It has a raised section that it sits on. Panther RV website shows the Left and Right access to the cassette is oriented as if you were sitting on the toilet not facing it.

    The Thetford cassette toilets are pretty standard in Europe, about 95% will have them. Downside is the chemicals used to keep smell away. They are toxic, so in some countries one is not allowed to empty in an outhouse toilet. There is a bio friendly variant. But both are very expensive, and the smell when emptying is more disgusting then the, let's say natural ingredients. But there is a very good solution: we install a SOG. This creates underpressure in the tank, and ariates the content. No smell at all when going to the toilet. The fan only works as long as one uses the toilet. No more chemicals needed, a bit of vinegar and washing up liquid to prevent urine stain and job done. Have lived in a motorhome for 5 years and will install it in any van or motorhome in the future.

    Jeff, you are probably my favorite YT DIY van build channel. I don’t need the fancy visual or audio effects to keep my interest, just good ideas, but as a professional filmmaker I understand why you may feel the need to do them, unfortunately. You have one of the few channels that actually isn’t just blindly copying what everybody else is doing. Your one area of weakness that I see is your understanding and use of 8020, but I feel that way about every other build channel on YT, so take this as a big compliment from someone with a BS degree in Architecture, a former structural engineer and current inventor who has been intensively using and researching 80/20 products during almost 4 years of prototype building.

    I don't know Jeff. I understand your super cold winter requirement, but am not convinced all these various toilets are really any better than the standard RV toilet with black tank. I think there may be eco-friendly anti-freeze on the market that pouring some of into the black tank would go along way to keep contents from freezing. And, I wonder how often one will be in weather so cold where some anti-freeze wouldn't do the job? And then there is the rest of the time when it's not so very cold. Now you're having to deal with dumping that cassette. I don't see how that is better than a standard RV style dump at a dump site. Seems to me regarding dealing with such issues the standard RV toilet, black tank, and RV dump is still the least hassle of an unavoidable task.
    Also, thanks for your videos. You do a well beyond excellent job. I'm playing catch up watching from your early builds towards your current postings. Will hit the bell once I've caught up to your most recent Sunday edition. Thanks!

    • @DaresDrives
      @DaresDrives  3 года назад +2

      Yeah different strokes for different folks.. It is only me in my van so if I can last a week that is long enough. Tanks start to stink if you go any longer.. I like this set up because I can easily dump this anywhere, even an outhouse or public toilet instead of looking for and potentially paying to use a dump site.. Me being in Canada yes our temps get to -30 and I really want to be equipped to handle anything for any amount of time! Not to mention there is not a lot of room under the van and finding a suitable spot to mount a black tank with my set up just wouldn't work. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      @@DaresDrives Good point in being able to dump your tank in places like an out house. I hadn't thought of that.

Best videos I like are those that go through everything. HandHeld through. This series should be an official netflix show or something. i been watching 100s of van build videos...this is probably up there as one of the best. Only personal advice is to keep it clean. Rare cussing I heard.

      i knew you had a reason but if you ever need to disassemble this for maintenance you will regret any non absolutely necessary caulking. You are very meticulous and that’s usually good but too much of anything is not good. One of the few things I think you will regret is making it so hard to get your refrigerator out. It may be a reliable brand but so was Maytag at one point, allegedly. Anyway I like the fact that you do things differently because I’m not gonna learn anything watching everybody do things the same way and I’m all too aware that just because people do things the same way does not mean it’s the right way. I am interested in that toilet and I’m trying to figure out which model has the cassette coming out the right side. It appears Home Depot carries them for a very reasonable price but I’m not sure if the cassette comes out the right side. Would I be correct in assuming if the flush is on the left that the cassette comes out on the right side?
